Abstract

Pahawang Island, Pesawaran Regency, Lampung Province has a coral reef ecosystem and is used as a primary resource for marine tourism, especially for snorkeling. The coral reef ecosystem on Pahawang Island faces pressure from environmentally unfriendly tourism. The Institutional Analysis Development (IAD) framework is used as an approach to evaluate the influence of exogenous variables, namely biophysical conditions, community attributes and rules-in-use on interactions between actors and ecotourism management using the structural equation modeling-partial least square (SEM-PLS) analysis method to test the causal relationship between latent variables. The results show that ecotourism management and rules-in-use have a significant influence on management performance, whereas the role of actors does not. Community attributes have been shown to influence actors, especially through similarities in their characteristics and levels of community understanding. Although there is a conservation initiative between academics and the community, its implementation is still constrained by limited coordination among parties, the dominance external actors, and limited local Capacity. Community education and empowerment are the keys to strengthening sustainable ecotourism management. This study emphasizes the importance of synergy between stakeholders and the implementation of effective regulations to support coral reef conservation and improving the welfare of coastal communities

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the distribution and productivity of sago plants (Metroxylon sp) on peatlands in the Meranti Islands Regency as an effort to support the green economy and ecosystem conservation. Peatlands have an important ecological function as carbon storage, water regulation, and biodiversity habitats, but their use often causes degradation. Sago, which naturally grows on peatlands, is a strategic local commodity with high economic and ecological value. Research data were sourced from the Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS) in 2022 for land area and sago production, as well as shapefile data on administrative boundaries and peatland distribution from geospatial sources. Quantitative methods were used to calculate sago productivity, while spatial analysis was conducted by overlaying maps of peatlands, rivers, and sago distribution. The results show that the average sago productivity in Meranti is 6.15 tons/ha, which is considered low, Even though districts with large land areas show high potential. The overlay map shows the integration between sago distribution and peatland ecology, as well as the support of small rivers in maintaining moisture. This study emphasizes the need for intensive management, cultivation technology, and land use diversification to increase productivity while preserving ecosystem sustainability, so that sago can become a sustainable flagship commodity in the Meranti Islands.

Abstract

Whale shark (Rhincodon typus) tourism has emerged as a potential marine-based economic activity in several regions of Indonesia, including Botubarani Village, Gorontalo Province. However, sustainable development of this tourism depends on understanding the suitability of the area and its carrying capacity to avoid ecological disturbances. This study aims to determine the resource potential through area suitability and tourism carrying capacity analysis for whale shark tourism in the waters of Botubarani Village. Field research was conducted from May to July 2019, using both primary and secondary data obtained from field observations, transmitter–receiver monitoring, and relevant institutional reports. The suitability analysis was performed using five ecological parameters—frequency and duration of appearance, water transparency, visibility, and current velocity, while the tourism carrying capacity was calculated based on visitor interaction regulations and available observation time. The results showed that the whale shark tourism area, covering approximately 65 hectares, falls into two categories: suitable (75.15%) and conditionally suitable (24.85%), indicating favorable environmental conditions for conservation-based tourism. The average water transparency was 10.76 m, visibility 8.9 m, and current velocity 0.0836 m/s, which are safe and comfortable for marine tourism activities. The tourism carrying capacity (TCC) was estimated at 24 visitors per day, equivalent to 528 visitors per month and 1,560 visitors during peak months (May–July), which remains below the optimal capacity. The findings suggest that whale shark tourism in Botubarani has high potential to be developed sustainably through regulated visitor management, conservation fees, and adherence to interaction guidelines. This study provides a scientific foundation for local authorities to design management strategies and spatial policies that balance ecological preservation with community welfare.

Abstract

This study examines community perceptions and involvement in coral reef conservation in Awaiama Village, Milne Bay Province, Papua New Guinea, through a social-ecological framework. Fieldwork in October 2024 integrated coral reef assessments with semi-structured interviews involving local stakeholders. Results indicate that coral reefs are important to livelihoods, food security, and cultural heritage. Despite this dependency, the reefs are increasingly threatened by overfishing, destructive fishing practices, and the impacts of climate change. The community exhibits limited ecological awareness and continues relying on unsustainable fishing methods. Although minor signs of reef recovery were recorded in some areas, community participation in formal conservation initiatives remains minimal. Traditional governance structures, such as clan meetings, play a more prominent role in local resource management. However, there is strong support for reef protection and recognition of the value in integrating traditional ecological knowledge with science-based management strategies. The findings highlight the need for co-management approaches tailored to local socio-economic contexts and emphasize education, sustainable practices, and collaborative governance to ensure long-term reef resilience.

Abstract

Abstract

National salt management in Indonesia is encountering overlapping regulations between the central and regional governments. Therefore, this study aimed to analyze salt management regulations in Indonesia and examine the reinforcement of the national salt management policy through harmonization between central and regional government regulations. The analysis used a normative legal method, focusing on the analysis of positive legal norms regulating the governance of salt sector in Indonesia. The results showed that salt management regulations in Indonesia comprised multiple legal instruments. The analysis further showed that laws primarily prioritized the protection and welfare of farmers, while government regulations permitted imports, leading to the suppression of domestic salt prices. As laws secured a market for locally produced salt, the ministerial regulation facilitated industry access to imported salt. Government regulations predominantly focused on achieving quantitative self-sufficiency targets, and statutory laws prioritized welfare as well as social protection of salt farmers. Regional regulations protected local salt production, and Minister of Trade Regulation advanced industry interests. This study assumed that salt management regulations were available, but there was a regulatory asymmetry between laws and their subordinate regulations. The analysis recommended the development of an incorporated, participatory, and impact-based grand design for a national salt management policy, ensuring social justice in the governance in salt sector of Indonesia.

Abstract

This community service program aims to enhance the competitiveness of the local honey product “Madu Biene” in Bengkalis Regency through strengthening branding, packaging, and market access to support sustainable development. Prior to implementation, the partner MSME had no Trade Business License (IUD), which hindered market expansion and formal cooperation. The method employed was Participatory Action Research (PAR), involving local government, entrepreneurs, academics, communities, and the private sector as strategic partners. Activities included training on brand identity design, development of eco-friendly packaging, facilitation of online and offline marketing, and socialization as well as assistance in obtaining the IUD. The results showed improvements in packaging quality and brand image, expansion of marketing networks, increased understanding of sustainability principles among business actors, and the issuance of the IUD, which strengthened business legality. Multi-sectoral collaboration proved effective as a catalyst for empowering MSMEs based on local resources, while contributing to the achievement of SDGs, particularly goals 8, 12, and 17.

Abstract

Binary logit regression analysis is to determine the probability that describes the relationship between a response variable and a predictor variable. This analysis is based on the logistic distribution and is used to model the relationship between the response variables and the explanatory variables. This study aims to analyze the decision factors of residents who live on the Cisadane river border on the possibility of dumping waste directly into the river and not throwing garbage into the river (burned, buried in the ground and dumped into the TPS). The results of testing the logistic regression model using SPSS Statistics version 25 software obtained 5 predictive variables with the selection of the best model where the availability of TPS, number of TPS, garbage officers, the role of community leaders and the impact of river waste had a significant effect on the decision factors of residents to throw garbage into the Cisadane river.
