Abstract

Background: Many adolescents misinterpret the definition of sexual activity, which is only generalized as having sex. In fact, many other activities can trigger the emergence of sexually transmitted infections. Therefore, this study aimed to analyze various factors that influence the occurrence of sexual activity in adolescents. Methods: This study used a cross-sectional analytical design with non-probability sampling involving 152 active college students aged 18-24 years from Surabaya, Indonesia. Data was collected using a questionnaire about their experiences of sexual activity at a young age. The questionnaire was distributed online in July–August 2023. The data obtained was analyzed using the chi-square test and simple logistic regression. Then, Q-GIS software was used to describe data spatially. Results: Dating relationship status had an association with the occurrence of sexual activity (p-value= 0.00; OR: 8.84; 95%CI: 3.34 - 23.40). Spatial data showed that sexual activity of students in the eastern region of Surabaya City had a relatively high rate compared to other regions. Conclusion: Dating relationship status is associated with sexual activity. This study also shows that students who have ever dated and who have had sexual relations is directly proportional in each region in Surabaya. Awareness and education of adolescents about healthy sexual activities should be increased to protect them from the negative impacts of premarital sex.

Abstract

The natural hatching success rate of olive ridley sea turtle (Lepidochelys olivacea) eggs on Pulau Santen Beach is often hindered by predator disturbances, temperature fluctuations caused by human activities, and unfavorable environmental conditions, with a success rate of only 50–70%. This study aimed to analyze the hatching success rate of olive ridley sea turtle eggs using the INTAN BOX incubation device on Pulau Santen Beach, Banyuwangi. A quantitative descriptive method was employed to observe 365 eggs relocated from four nests to the INTAN BOX over an incubation period of 50–60 days. Parameters observed included temperature, humidity, and hatching success rates. Results indicated an average hatching success rate of 86%, with individual nest success rates ranging from 83% to 89%. These rates are significantly higher than the 50–70% success rate achieved through natural hatching. The INTAN BOX provides a stable environment, protects eggs from predators, and optimizes temperature and humidity conditions, thereby enhancing hatching success. Additionally, the device enables the management of hatchling sex ratios through temperature-dependent sex determination (TSD), which is critical for sea turtle population conservation. This study concluded that the INTAN BOX is an effective innovation for olive ridley turtle conservation while also supporting local community empowerment around Pulau Santen Beach.

Abstract

Air pollution has significant adverse effects on human health, particularly on the respiratory system. Prolonged exposure to pollutants such as fine particulate matter (PM₂.₅) and sulfur dioxide (SO₂) can lead to respiratory damage. Boulevard Raya Street in North Jakarta is an industrial area with heavy traffic, where parking attendants spend long hours outdoors and are continuously exposed to ambient air pollutants. This study aims to assess the health risk posed by PM₂.₅ and SO₂ exposure to parking attendants working along Boulevard Raya Street, Kelapa Gading, North Jakarta, in 2024. A quantitative approach was used, employing the Environmental Health Risk Analysis (EHRA) method with 18 respondents. Variables analyzed included gender, age, body weight, working hours, and exposure duration. The analysis showed that most respondents were aged between 18–50 years, with exposure durations of up to 8 hours/day, 350 days/year, over a 30-year period. The estimated average intake of PM₂.₅ was 10.88 mg/kg/day, with a Risk Quotient (RQ) of 1.83—indicating a potential non-carcinogenic health risk. In contrast, the average intake of SO₂ was 3.56 mg/kg/day with an RQ of 0.22, which falls within the acceptable safety threshold. In conclusion, PM₂.₅ exposure among parking attendants in the study area exceeds safe limits and poses a health risk, while SO₂ exposure remains within tolerable limits.

Abstract

Teenagers are more susceptible to contracting human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Of the 34 provinces in Indonesia, East Java continues to have the highest rate of new HIV diagnoses. One tactic for HIV prevention and control is voluntary counseling and testing (VCT). The purpose of this study is to examine the risk factors associated with the uptake of VCT for HIV among adolescents in the general population of East Java. A cross-sectional study design, a quantitative technique, and an observational methodology are all used in this research. 329 individuals in total, selected at random, took part in this study. The prevalence ratio (PR) with a 95% confidence interval was examined in order to determine the level of risk. Out of all the parameters that were found, social media access (PR = 10.133; 95%CI 1.293 - 79.422) and social capital (PR = 10.741; 95% 3.240 - 35.601) were found to have a substantial impact on VCT for HIV. Thus, it's critical to enhance social capital and implement educational initiatives on VCT for HIV using social media in order to improve teenagers' favorable perceptions of the treatment.
