Abstract

The sorghum (Sorghum bicolor) plant is highly tolerant and adapted to drought. It has the potential to be developed and planted on marginal land in Indonesia. Tar spot disease is one of the obstacles to sorghum cultivation. In Indonesia, there is no report yet about this disease, especially on sorghum. To achieve optimal disease management, information on disease incidence and severity levels, as well as pathogen tar spot disease identification, are required. The aims of this study were to morphologically identify the pathogen and determine the level of incidence and severity of tar spot in sorghum cultivation areas in Bogor Regency, Gunung Kidul Regency, and West Lombok Regency. The disease observations were carried out on 17 sorghum varieties from the three areas with no experimental design. The results of the observation of the tar spot disease incidence in 17 varieties of sorghum from Bogor, Gunung Kidul, and West Lombok were 100%. The level of tar spot disease severity varied from 32.4% in the Latu Keta sorghum variety to the highest of 87.9% in the Samurai sorghum variety. The macroscopic and microscopic observation results of tar spot on sorghum plants showed that the cause of the tar spot disease was the Phyllachora fungi. This is the first report of a tar spot on sorghum caused by Phyllachora sp. in Indonesia.

Abstract

Plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) is a promising technology for controlling viral diseases, including pepper yellow leaf curl disease (PYLCD) of chili pepper caused by Begomovirus infection. The objectives of this research were to investigate the effectiveness of PGPR containing Pseudomonas fluorescens PF1 and Bacillus polymyxa BG25, as well as their combination with other protective agents, to control PYLCD under field conditions in an endemic region. The treatments consisted of a single application of PGPR (a mixture of P. fluorescens PF1 and B. polymyxa BG25), guano tea, endophytic fungus H5, and neem oil; combination of PGPR with guano tea, endophytic fungus H5, and neem oil; conventional pesticide that relies on synthetic chemical insecticide sprayed weekly; and untreated plots. The experiment was arranged in a randomized block design with four replications. Treatment with PGPR alone was able to delay disease onset by 2.25 weeks, but it caused only a slight reduction in disease incidence. The combination of PGPR + guano tea and PGPR + endophyte H5 provided the best results in controlling PYLCD. The combination of PGPR + guano tea and PGPR + endophyte H5 delayed disease onset by 2.75 weeks and 3.25 weeks, respectively, and reduced disease incidence with effectiveness rates of 52.72% and 52.08%, respectively. These two treatment combinations gave the best performance for plant growth and yield.

Abstract

Purple blotch, caused by Alternaria porri, affects leaves and tubers, leading to reduced yields. Traditionally, synthetic chemical fungicides were heavily relied upon for control. As an alternative, biocontrol agents like actinomycetes have gained attention. Some actinomycetes can suppress plant pathogens by producing antifungal compounds. This research aimed to investigate the efficacy of phyllosphere actinomycetes from Liliaceae plants as biocontrol agents against purple blotch disease on shallots in the greenhouse. Conducted at the IPB University Plant Bacteriology and Mycology Laboratory and the greenhouse at Bogor Agricultural Development Polytechnic, West Java, the research involved several stages, including pathogen identification, preparation of actinomyces inoculum and A. porri, and application of actinomycetes biocontrol agents to shallots in the greenhouse. A. porri isolates were obtained from shallot production centers in the Brebes area, Central Java. The use of the actinomycetes from the phyllosphere effectively suppressed purple blotch disease, with the lowest area under the disease development curve (AUDPC) recorded at 635.9% for the CFS28 isolate. Lower AUDPC values indicated slower disease progression. Actinomycetes biocontrol agents showed promising efficacy, with the CFS28 isolate achieving the highest efficacy percentage of 78.37%. Additionally, plant growth was significantly enhanced by actinomycete application, with tuber sizes ranging from 1.44 to 2.06 g, fresh weights from 17.63 to 24.72 g, and dry weights of shallot bulbs from 5.43 to 17.96 g. The incubation period for A. porri could be extended by actinomycetes, ranging from 5.43 to 8.5 days for purple blotch symptoms to manifest on shallots. The use of Actinomyces phyllosphere biocontrol agents holds promise for disease control on other plants’ leaves, contributing to environmentally friendly and sustainable agricultural practices.

Abstract

Rice (Oryza sativa) is an important staple crop for more than half of the world's population to fulfill required nutrients. The most important pest in rice crops is the field rat (Rattus argentiventer), which causes damage and significant yield losses during almost every growing season. One method of rat control is the Trap Barrier System (TBS) which consists of fences, mass/multiple live traps, and trap crops and was able to continuously catch rats during the growing season. The objectives of this study were to count rat captured in TBS during one planting season in fallow lands, identify attack source, and calculate rat damage intensity. The study was conducted on one hectare of rice field and number of rat caught were observed daily. Results showed that 4,580 rats were caught, consisting of 57% males and 43% females, with 94% adults and 6% juveniles. Average rat damage intensity was 15% and the highest number of rats caught were in trap 8, 9, and 10 which were located on the north side and had many suitable shelters for rats.

Abstract

Controlling pests and diseases of chili plants still relies on synthetic chemical pesticides, which have negative effects on agroecosystems. Biopesticides can be used as alternatives to synthetic pesticides. The use of biopesticides in Indonesia is still low, and popularization efforts are required. The government plays a role in determining policies that encourage the popularization of biopesticides. This study aimed to determine policy priorities for the popularization of biopesticides for chili farmers. Policy priorities are determined using the analytical hierarchy process (AHP) method, which allows the identification of priority criteria and priority sub-criteria. The current policy on crop protection is insufficient to encourage the popularization of biopesticides. Low commercialization and government programs that are not yet massive are indications of the low use of biopesticides. The AHP results showed that the criteria for knowledge about biopesticides are policies that must be prioritized, where the sub-criteria of the level of intensity and quality of extension are the top priorities. The effectiveness and efficiency policy criteria need to prioritize the effectiveness of sub-criteria in controlling pests and diseases over the efficiency of use, preservation of natural enemies, and product quality, while the ease of obtaining products is the main factor in prioritizing the availability and affordability criteria. Keywords: analytical hierarchy process, AHP, biopesticide, farmers, IPM, policy
