Abstract

The promotion of critical and creative thinking through technology integration at once in English learning presents a large challenge. This study employs a qualitative approach to explore teachers’ viewpoints of promoting students’ critical and creative thinking through Technology-enhanced Active Language Learning; and the extent of teachers integrating TEALL into English learning at Junior High School (JHS) in Indonesia. Employing qualitative approach with purposive sampling, eight junior high school teachers from three islands of Indonesia were recruited. Research data were transcriptions of recorded interviews, teacher reflective journals, and Google Search Console (GSC) performance report. Triangulation was used to compare and cross-check findings and increase research credibility and validity. Findings show teachers emphasize the promotion of critical and creative thinking based on cognitive processes, linking critical thinking to receptive skills and creative thinking to productive skills. TEALL integration is viewed as supportive instead of transformative to the promotion. Such evidences as lengthy texts and complex sentences are considered the best input to facilitate students’ critical analysis. The view stems from teachers’ apprehension of evident infusion of critical and creative thinking into the instructions. The key to success of integrating TEALL is teachers’ acceptance. Increasing teachers’ self confidence and commitment can be the driving force underlying the learning outcomes. Strengthening their readiness can also be the lever for impactful practices. This study is limited by the diverse social and cultural differences present in Indonesia. Therefore, future research in education reform should take these as essential aspects and decide their position within.

Abstract

Nagari Siguntur, located in Koto XI Tarusan District, Pesisir Selatan Regency, has great potential for cultural tourism. However, information related to the tourism profile, transportation access, infrastructure, and event schedules in the area is still unavailable, even on the official village website, which has led to tourism stagnation. This Community Service Program aims to provide training and assistance in developing digital content about cultural wisdom for the Nagari Siguntur officials as part of the Empowerment Forum for the Village Information System (SINAR) and AI integration. Through this program, the Nagari Siguntur officials are expected to be equipped and ready to establish an AI-assisted Village Information System (SINAR) that provides sufficient public information, thereby accelerating the realization of an independent village in terms of cultural information, with positive impacts on tourism and the local economy. The methods used include training sessions introducing basic concepts of culture and cultural wisdom, cultural content writing, interview techniques, journalistic ethics, and the use of social media platforms for publication, as well as workshops on writing engaging and informative cultural content and managing social media platforms such as websites.

Abstract

This study aims to investigate the perceived needs, lacks, and wants of sports students in learning English to develop an effective English coursebook tailored to their academic and professional contexts. Despite the significance of English proficiency in sports education, existing materials lack alignment with the unique requirements of sports students, creating a research gap in English for Specific Purposes (ESP) for this field. The study employed a quantitative approach, collecting data through a need’s analysis questionnaire distributed to 100 sports students from three universities—two private universities and one public university—in West Sumatra, Indonesia. The questionnaire, consisting of 132 items divided into necessities, lacks, and wants, was analyzed using a Likert scale. Data collection was conducted online via Google Forms. The findings indicate that students prioritize learning materials with practical applications and project-based approaches, particularly for communication skills and sports-related vocabulary. However, significant gaps were identified in students’ language skills and foundational language components, emphasizing the need for targeted instructional interventions. The study concludes by recommending the development of a specialized ESP coursebook that integrates project-based language learning (PBLL) with sports-specific content to address the identified gaps.

Abstract

Recognizing the critical intersection of technology and education, particularly in language acquisition, the State Islamic College of Madina in North Sumatra undertook a study to investigate the innovation and development of English language learning media through Information Technology (IT) integration. The study aimed to address the following objectives: firstly, to identify the existing technological landscape in English language instruction; secondly, to assess the effectiveness of IT-based learning resources; and finally, to explore opportunities for improvement and future development in this domain. This research seeks to bridge the gap in literature by examining the nuanced impact of IT integration on English language education within the context of a religious institution. Employing a mixed-methods approach, data were gathered from students, educators, and administrators to gain insights into their perceptions of IT-based learning resources. The key findings revealed varying levels of technological competence among participants, impacting their engagement with IT tools. Educators emphasized the necessity of seamlessly integrating technology into lessons to enhance student engagement and learning experiences. Meanwhile, students acknowledged the convenience of digital resources but highlighted challenges such as technical issues and content relevance. Notable trends include the importance of investing in educator professional development and improving IT resource accessibility.
