Abstract

Salah satu jenis wayang yang unik dan menarik adalah wayang milik orang Tionghoa yaitu yang kita kenal denganWayang Potehi. Wayang Potehi sendiri merupakan akulturasi budaya yang sangat bernilai untuk dijagakelestariannya. Dewasa ini Wayang Potehi mengalami penurunan minat atau bahkan sudah dilupakan, terutama darikalangan anak muda. Melalui kegiatan pengabdian kepada masyarakat yang bertujuan untuk meningkatkankepedulian anak muda pada khususnya dan masyarakat pada umumnya tentang keberadaan Wayang Potehi. Melaluisurvei yang dilakukan sebagian besar responden (anak muda) jika ditanya tentang Wayang Potehi banyak diantaramereka yang tidak mengetahui. Salah satu hal yang bisa digunakan untuk membangkitkan ketertarikan generasimuda adalah melalui media yang mereka kenal dan sukai saat ini. Salah satunya adalah melalui membuat gambarilustrasi karakter Wayang Potehi dengan gaya yang lebih dekat dengan anak muda sehingga kedepan bisa dibuatkanaplikasinya ke media promosi yang dekat dengan anak muda.

Abstract

AbstractThis research investigated whether or not using animated learning video as teaching media was effective in teaching vocabulary. This was a pre-experimental research with one group pre-test and post-test design. The population was the seventh grade students of SMPN 1 Sungai Ambawang and the sample was the VII A which consists of 17 students. The data were collected using objective tests and analyzed by t-test and effect size formula. The obtained t-value (12.57) was bigger than the critical value of r (1.746) by the degree of freedom 16 meaning that animated learning video increased the students’ vocabulary. The effect size was categorized as high effect since the ES value (2.76)was bigger than the reliability coefficient of the test (0.8). So, based on the research findings, the null hypothesis (Ho) was rejected, while the alternative hypothesis (Ha) which states that “Teaching vocabulary by using animated learning video is significantly effective” was accepted. To conclude, the use of animated learning video is highly significantly effective to teach vocabulary to the seventh grade students of SMPN 1 Sungai Ambawang in Academic Year 2017/2018. Keywords: Animated Learning Video, Vocabulary, Teaching Media

Abstract

AbstractLanguage available in a newspaper is consumed in a wide public or society so that the sentence structure available in a newspaper is usually constructed carefully according to the level of consumer or reader. Newspaper also plays the major role in accelerating language study. Newspaper sentence structures are composed from various types of tenses and various types of sentences. The research method apply for this is research is textual analysis since the research is analyzing the descriptive in the newspaper. After analyzing the sentence structure in The Jakarta Post newspaper, it is found that descriptive consists of 4 types of sentences and resulted in 371 sentences were found in total. The 371 sentences consist of 86 sentences in simple sentence, 74 sentences for compound sentence, 169 sentences for complex sentence and 42 for compound-complex sentence. The sentence structures found in Jakarta Post newspaper are well structured and recommended for further tool for studying reading for enhancement process. Keyword: Descriptive analysis, Grammar, Language, Newspaper, Sentence structure, The Jakarta Post.

Abstract

AbstractThis research was conducted to find out whether or not journal writing is effective to teach students writing skill on recount text. The writer used pre-experimental design. This research was conducted to the eighth grade students of SMPN 1 Manis Mata. The population was the students of class VIII with the total number of the students 172. The sample of this research was the students of class VIIIA which consists of 35 students. It was chosen by using cluster sampling technique. The technique used to collect the data was measurement technique with an essay written test as the tool of collecting data. The data were obtained from the result of pre-test and post-test. The mean score of pre-test was 57.82 and post-test was 61.25. The writer used t-test formula to find out the effectiveness of journal writing. From the calculation, the t-test was 3.3 which was higher than t-table (1.697) in df = 34 at level 0.05. The effect size was 0.55 which is categorized as moderate effect. The findings of the research obviously showed that the use of journal writing was significantly effective to teach writing recount text to the eighth grade students of SMPN 1 Manis Mata. Keywords: Writing, Recount Text, Journal Writing

Abstract

AbstractStudents’ engagement impacts significantly to students’ achievement. When students are engaged in learning activity, it will be easy for them to understand the materials given by the teacher and they are able to focus on the lesson. Students’ engagemet will have a good effect to students’ self confidence, interest, and motivation. In teaching, the writer found that most of the students were not engaged in learning activity escpecially the students of IX E at MTsN 2 Pontianak that consists of thirty eight students, in  academic year 2017-2018. It could be seen from the students attitude toward the lesson. Most of the students exhibited low interest in learning. It was hard for them to focus on the teacher’s explanation. They also had low motivation and less attention. To overcome this problem, the writer chose one of the cooperative learning model namely Student Teams Achievement Division or STAD. STAD is made up of five major components: class presentation, teams, quizzes, individual improvement scores, and team recognition. This research aimed at enhancing students’ engagement in reading comprehension of procedure text. STAD can be used as an alternative method for teaching reading and it can make students more active in participating or interacting with their friends to answer the questions. In this research, the writer applied a classroom action research in three cycles. Each cycle consisted of two meetings. The data have been collected by using the observation checklist, field notes, and questionnaire. After conducting the research, there was a significant improvement on students’ reading comprehension and especially on students’ engagement in teaching learning process. According to the writer, STAD can be used as one of the alternatives to enhance students’ engagement and students’ motivation as well. By learning in a group, the students are able to improve their self confidence, their self esteem and their competences.Keywords: CAR, Cooperative Learning, Reading Comprehension, STAD.

Abstract

Abstract  This research aimed to improve students’ vocabulary using realia to class VII F students of SMP Negeri 1 Sungai Raya in Academic Year 2017/2018. This research was conducted based on the problems found in the classroom. It was found that students had difficulties in understanding on meaning of words, spelling and pronunciation. This research was conducted through a Classroom Action Research in two cycles to 32 students of class VII F. In collecting the data, the researcher used observation and measurement technique. The tools of collecting data were observation checklist, field notes and test. The qualitative data were analyzed using the following procedure: organizing the data, describing the data and building interpretation. For the quantitative data were analyzed by finding and comparing the mean score of the test in cycle 1 and cycle 2. Based on the findings in this research, it was  found that using realia in teaching and learning improved students’ understanding on meaning of words, ability in spelling and ability in pronuncing the words. Besides, the presence of the things interests the students in teaching and learning in the classroom. Keywords: Improve, Vocabulary, Realia.

Abstract

AbstractThe purposes of this research are to investigate whether or not the use of English song  to improve students’ vocabulary achievement in teaching English vocabulary  and to find out the effect size of the improvement of students’ vocabulary achievement after being taught using English song to the eighth grade students of SMP Muhammadiyah 2 Pontianak. The sample of this research was 34 students in class VIII A. The data of study was derived from pre test and post test. The technique of data collection is measurement technique and the tool of data collection is a test in form of fill in the blanks test. The research findings show that the mean score of pre-test is 75.85while the mean score of post-test is 85.76. It means that English song improves the students’ vocabulary achievement. Furthermore, the effect size of the significant improvement of the treatment was 0.8. It is categorized as highly effective since it is higher than 0.5. The teacher might put some appropriate variations in applying the strategy considering the situation and condition found in the classroom. Keywords: Teaching English, Vocabulary, English Song

Abstract

AbstractThe aim of this research was to investigate whether or not Think-Talk-Write (TTW) strategy effective to teach vocabulary in descriptive text and the effect size of Think-Talk-Write (TTW) strategy. The method was a pre-experimental research with one group pre-test and post-test design. The population of this research was the eighth grade students of SMP N 19 Pontianak. The sample of this research was VIII B which consisted of 35 students. The data of this research were collected using measurement technique and the tool of data collecting was multiple choice test. The research findings showed that the mean score of pre-test was 59.7 and the mean score of post-test was 70. Furthermore, the data analyzed using t-test resulted that t-test score (5.271) was higher than t-table (2.032) at 0.05 degree of freedom. It means that the  null hypothesis (Ho) was rejected and the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted. The calculation of effect size of the treatment is 0.89. It is categorized as moderately effective. It can be concluded that the use of Think-Talk-Talk (TTW) strategy is moderately effective to teach vocabulary in descriptive text. So, it is recommended to the teacher to use Think-Talk-Write (TTW) strategy as one of strategies to teach vocabulary in descriptive text. Keywords: Think-Talk-Write (TTW) Strategy, Vocabulary, Descriptive Text.

Abstract

The research was aimed to examine the operation technique to improve teaching speaking in a procedure text. The research was Classroom Action Research in three cycles. The participants of the research were year 11 students of SMK Al-Madani Pontianak who had difficulties in speaking skills, especially in performing spoken texts in a procedure text. The data were divided into qualitative and quantitative data. The qualitative data were collected by using questionnaires, video recordings, observation sheets, observation’s checklists, student’s self-evaluation, and field notes. Meanwhile, the quantitative data were collected from the student’s performance tests. The finding showed that through operation, the student’s learning behavior changed positively from less to good. The writer concludes that the use of operation technique which is adjusted to the classroom’s condition improve teaching speaking in a procedure text as well as the student’s speaking skill in performing the procedure text.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to find out how STAD technique did improve students comprehension in reading descriptive text. The action hypothesis in this research was stated that teaching reading descriptive text using Student Team Achievement Divisions (STAD) technique can improve the achievement of the eighth grade students of MTSN 2 Pontianak. Classroom action research was used in conducting this research in two cycles. The data were divided measurement test, observation checklist, and field note. The result of the implementation shows that after the researcher conducted the actions, the students reading comprehension improved as shown in the result of both the observation on the students activities during the actions and their individual quizzes mean scores. From the reading comprehension test, the mean score of the individual quiz 1 was 48.57 and the mean score of the individual quiz 2 was 75.75. Student Team Achievement Divisions technique can improve reading comprehension of main idea, details, reference and inference.
