Abstract

This research aims to describe how the use of digital storytelling impact the tenth-grade (X.A) students at SMA Santo Fransiskus Asisi Pontianak in learning listening comprehension. The animation stories of digital form were served to bring the engagement among students in listening activities. The listening activity was done with the assistance of audio visual media by manipulating the original story to the new version. Then, the story board was rearranged to associate the students’ listening comprehension to the changing plot of the story being played. The research used classroom action research conducted in two cycles. Every cycle consisted of four steps such as planning, action, evaluation, and reflection. The data in every learning cycle were presented quantitatively based on the indicator and described in qualitative descriptions. The weakness in one cycle was revised, and did the following cycle with the same steps but with the revised lesson plan. Research instruments were constructed in the form of assessment rubric, field note, and observation instrument to the lesson plan and teaching process. The findings revealed that the students showed their positive changes from one cycle to the next cycle in terms of engagement and listening comprehension. As a result, the use of digital storytelling to teach listening improves the students’ engagement and impacts positively to the achievement on listening comprehension through the medium of animation of fractured story.

Abstract

This study aims to explore the need for students' workbooks based on local wisdom in the Merdeka Curriculum for junior high school students, particularly at SMPN 3 Air Besar. The study is motivated by the importance of local wisdom in shaping students' character and identity, as well as the need for appropriate teaching materials that can support the implementation of the Merdeka Curriculum. This study employed a survey research design to elicit information. To identify the students' needs, data was collected through questionnaires, interviews, and direct observations. The interviews were conducted with students, English teachers, and villagers to gather in-depth information about the students' needs in the materials design. The study proposes various positions for EFL teachers to perform, including visionaries, cultural mediators on a local level, intercultural educators, and role model practitioners. It offers strategies for EFL teachers to include local cultural elements into their classroom instruction, such as establishing a local culturally responsive pedagogy, cultural sensitivity and awareness, and leveraging technology and information to support teaching. Incorporating local culture into EFL teaching can benefit students by raising cultural awareness, developing cultural literacy, building intercultural competence, enhancing language learning experiences, and acquiring skills in eliciting meaning. By using a workbook that takes into account the specific requirements of the students, teachers can better address their learning needs and create a more effective and engaging learning environment. It is recommended that English language teachers utilize the workbook that is based on local wisdom, as it aligns with the Indonesian National Educational System and the current Merdeka Curriculum, which emphasizes the relation between teaching English and the learners' closest environment for meaningful language use. Overall, the study focuses on exploring the need for a supplementary workbook that integrates local wisdom and culture into English language teaching, aiming to enhance students' language proficiency and cross-cultural communication skills.

Abstract

This community service aims to provide information about the role of Gotu kola extract (Centella asiatica) as a neural antioxidant and mitoprotective in the context of helping reduce symptoms of Alzheimer's disease. Alzheimer's, a form of dementia common in old age, still has no effective treatment after more than a hundred years of research. Gotu kola extract has been traditionally known in Asia as a cognitive-enhancing drug and has antioxidant and mitoprotective properties that can revitalize nerve and brain cells. Through the community service program, we organized a webinar on the benefits of Gotu Kola herbs in helping prevent Alzheimer's disease for students of the University of 17 August 1945 Jakarta and the general public in North Jakarta. The results of this activity showed a positive response from participants, with 42 participants from various backgrounds attending the webinar.

Abstract

The partner of this Community Partnership Program (PKM) is LP2M Cokroaminoto University Makassar, South Sulawesi. Initial observations found various problems, namely: (1) not understanding panel data modeling with processing techniques in inputting data into the System Dynamic program which focuses on econometric analysis contained in panel data, (2) not knowing how to interpret or read panel data output. The solution to the problems found was given training with the target participants being students and lecturers of Cokroaminoto University Makassar. The number of participants who participated in this activity was 15 participants. The method approach used in solving existing problems is through lectures, demonstrations, discussions, questions and answers, and partner assistance. The results achieved are (1) partners have knowledge in economic modeling using the System Dynamic application, (2) partners have skills in operating the System Dynamic application, (3) partners have alternative econometric applications for data processing and economic data analysis. The success indicators of this activity can be seen from the participants' increased understanding of economic modeling with the System Dynamic application. Abstract

This research investigated the impact of the "Learn English Listening App" on eighth-grade students' listening comprehension. The design of Classroom Action Research (CAR) was used in this study. Two cycles of pre and post-tests, observations, and interviews were conducted. In the first cycle, the app did not lead to a statistical improvement in listening. The mean post-test score (57) was lower than the mean pre-test (61). The observations indicated a positive attitude towards the app, yet some students underutilized its potential, highlighting the need for further support. Interviews provided insights, emphasizing the importance of additional guidance in applying the application. In the second cycle, the students were maximized to utilize the app, significantly improving listening comprehension (mean score: 72.67). The t-test analysis showed a difference (t ≈ 2.43) between the pre and post-test, confirming the app's effectiveness. The observations during the second cycle showed enhanced engagement. The "Learn English Listening App" proved valuable for enhancing eighth-grade students' listening skills. The classroom action research approach allowed for iterative adjustments, contributing to improved scores. In conclusion, the second cycle's t-test results, supported by classroom observations and interviews, provide robust evidence of the app's positive impact. Educators at Islam Al-Azhar 17 Pontianak and similar settings can consider integrating technology-based interventions like the app to enhance students' listening comprehension. Further research could explore its long-term effects and impact on other language skills.
