Abstract

Teaching materials used in schools are various. Coursebooks are books used in colleges or schools as teaching guideline. The tasks presented in a coursebook should fit three basic components; they are the curriculum, the students, and the teachers. İn this study, the researcher only focus on a coursebook fits the students. In order to fit the students’ need, a textbook should consider four things, such as content/explanation, examples, exercises/tasks, and presentation/format. The latest curriculum in Indonesia which is curriculum 2013 requires English teachers to implement a new coursebook. Therefore, the explanation of coursebook materials shuoulb be clear and understandable. Hence, the writer aimed this study to investigate the presented explanation of grammar materials in the latest revised English Coursebook of grade tenth. Whether the explanation can help the students achieve the learning objectives. This study was a content analysis study which analyses the content of a coursebook. The result of the study revealed that this coursebook is quite simple yet it does not consist of clear explanations on the grammar materials part. Moreover, some interactive teaching strategies are presented in the coursebook. Some language use and languge form also emphasizes in the coursebook.

Abstract

Students, particularly in senior high school often state that they like instructors who employ active learning strategies to get students engaged with the class topic. Sometimes, large teaching classes are difficult to get students to participate in classroom activities and assess whether they are truly learning or not. It is why providing a game is an appropriate way to create a fun and interactive engagement for students to learn and comprehend the information. “The value of games as a vehicle for teaching concepts while inspiring students is now well accepted at almost all levels of education” Becker  (2001). Kahoot is known as a technology-based instructional tool, it is a popular eLearning tool that easily can be used to add vitality, student engagement, and meta-cognitive supports with limited instructor or student training required. This study aims to analyze the use of Kahoot in engaging students’ active response in learning English. This is a classroom action research. Descriptive analysis is conducted to gain the students action and response during teaching and learning processes proposed by Kemmis and McTaggart in Hopkins (2008). The subjects of this study are twelve grade students of SMAN 1 Serawai, Kabupaten Sintang.

Abstract

Textbook plays an important role in English language teaching. Therefore evaluating a textbook is needed. It is interesting to analyse the newest textbook provided by the government due to it is used as a compulsory textbook. This study used a framework proposed by Littlejohn (2011). It is a subjective analysis level. The study focused on three key aspects of tasks; (1) what is the learners expected to do; (2) who are the learners to work with; and (3) what is the content focus for.  This was a qualitative content analysis study. The data of the research is "When English Rings A Bell" textbook.  It is used on the seventh-grade level. The data was collected using the analysis tasks sheet.  The result of the study has shown that the tasks presented were relevant to the requirements regarding Littlejohn’s framework. Based on the findings, it suggested that the materials developer should enrich presented ELT materials with various tasks.

Abstract

Background: Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) condition could affect the skin. The disease is among the greatest risk factors of skin infection such as cutaneous candidiasis and is also associated with autoimmune skin diseases such as psoriasis, which lesion morphologies and predilection areas are quite similar. These similarities are a source of confusion to clinicians. Case illustration: We present a 60-year-old female patient with uncontrolled T2DM and multiple erythematous plaques in the form of shiny lesions at the intertriginous area that developed 1 week prior to her hyperglycemic state. The lesions had recurred at the same site for approximately 10 years and were initially diagnosed as intertriginous candidiasis. Bedside testing revealed a positive Auspitz sign, while the patient’s fungal culture was unremarkable. She was diagnosed with inverse psoriasis (IP) and treated with 0.1% mometasone furoate cream twice a day. The lesions improved but were not completely resolved. Discussion: Inverse psoriasis is a subgroup of psoriasis characterized with thin, non-layered scales, and various predilection areas. The features of the primary lesion may be altered by a patient’s activities, such as use of cleansing soap, which may cause lesions to dry out and ooze, similar to cutaneous candidiasis. Additional examination, such as bedside testing and laboratory work, could help obtain a proper diagnosis. Conclusion: The similar morphologies and predilection areas of IP and cutaneous candidiasis lesions may confuse clinicians. In some limited cases, the correct diagnosis may be obtained by complete history taking, physical examination, and other simple tests.

Abstract

Background: Dry skin or xerosis is a layer of skin that loses moisture due to increased transepidermal water loss (TEWL). Olive oil, one of the most commonly available moisturizers, is often used to keep the skin hydrated. Skin hydration indicates the amount of water in the stratum corneum. This systematic review aimed to determine the association between olive oil application and skin hydration based on clinical assessment and TEWL parameters. Methods: The research design used was a systematic review based on the criteria of preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta-analyses (PRISMA). This systematic review search used PubMed, ProQuest, Google Scholar, CINAHL, and NLM Catalog databases. The risk of bias in the literature used in this study was assessed using the Revised Cochrane risk-of-bias tool for randomized trials (RoB 2). Results: Five articles were included in this systematic review in which topical intervention on the skin was used with olive oil and other oils, placebo, or no therapy as controls. Olive oil can improve skin conditions clinically and provide various beneficial effects such as antioxidants and anti-inflammatory, but the oleic acid content, which is the main component of olive oil, has detrimental effects on the skin. Conclusion: This systematic review reveals that olive oil can improve skin condition clinically, but long-term topical application of olive oil may damage the integrity of the skin and increase TEWL.
