Abstract

Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) is one of the tools to represent molecular structure based on atomic vibration. It can denote a specific property of the chemical bond and molecular structure in the material, especially when analyzing specimens relating to plastics, polymers, and organic components. The FTIR peaks and spectrum act as a fingerprint of a specific molecular structure and chemical bonding, which need a sufficient reference database to distinguish them. This paper is to address issues of the need for a reference database of FTIR. This paper exhibits step-by-step information on how to read and interpret the FTIR spectra and identify a molecule's backbone with its functional groups. Practical examples from the analysis of several plastics/polymers and the thermally decomposing plastics/polymers were included to help and guide the reader to comprehend the basic concept of FTIR spectra.

Abstract

The development and analysis of a reactor design for the manufacture of zinc ferrite is the aim of this study. The design employs a Continuous Stirred Tank Reactor (CSTR) type, with the tank and stirrer serving as the reactor's primary structural elements. The requirements for the built tank and stirrer will significantly impact the safety and production of silicon dioxide. As a result, Microsoft Excel is used for the calculation process for designing this reactor. The results of the calculations are obtained for design pressure 4,304 psig, cylinder thickness 0.07 in, top cover thickness 0.07 in, top cover height 12.39 in, bottom cover thickness 0.08 in, bottom cover height 21.18 in, reactor height 44.34 in, impeller length 5.43 in, stirring power 5 hp and shaft length 15.98 in. This design can become a reference for the production of zinc ferrite to make it more efficient in the production process.

Abstract

This study aims to develop and analyze the design of heat exchangers (HE) in the synthesis of PbO particles using a single precursor method. This type of HE shell and tube one-pass is designed to be simple. The specifications of HE equipment are shell length 1.5200 m, shell diameter 0.1361 m, outer tube diameter 0.0334 m, and thickness 0.0243 m. Then the calculation is done manually using the Microsoft Excel application. The results showed that the HE shell and tube design with the one pass type has a laminar flow, with an effective value of 84.66%. Therefore, this heat exchanger with shell and tube one meets the requirements and standards based on effectiveness, but without considering the fouling factor. The results of this analysis can be used as a learning medium in the design process, analysis of heat exchanger performance, and operating mechanisms.

Abstract

Combination of spray drying and templating method has been reported as one of the best method to produce porous pharmaceutical particles. However, current development reports have shown successful formation of porous particles with improper information on what mechanism occurs during the synthesis process and what process parameters involve the creation of particles with controllable pore structures and morphologies. In this report, influences of spray-drying parameters (i.e., size and amount of colloidal template, and droplet diameter) on porous particle fabrication were investigated. Hyaluronic acid (as a model of pharmaceutical drug host component) and polystyrene spheres (as a model of template) were used. The experimental results showed that the spray-drying parameters strongly influenced the external morphology (i.e., spherical and doughnut-shaped), particle outer diameter (from 300 to 2000 nm), and porous configuration (i.e., number of hole cavities and pore sizes (from 100 to 300 nm)) of particles. To qualitatively explain our synthesis strategies to get porous structure, the proposal of the particle formation mechanism was added.

Abstract

The present study investigated the photodecomposition of an organic material during the partial (88.76%) solar eclipse phenomenon of 9 March 2016 in Bandung, Indonesia. Curcumin and anatase titanium dioxide (TiO2) particles were used as models of organic material and photocatalyst, respectively. The influence of the process parameters (i.e., curcumin concentration and the amount of TiO2) on the photodecomposition process was also investigated. The results showed that the curcumin was decomposed along with the solar light irradiation time. During the solar eclipse, the photodecomposition rate is suddenly down. The partial solar eclipse provided a slower photodecomposition process than the process under sunny days (conducted on 8 and 10 March 2016). The concentration of curcumin and the amount of TiO2 also have played an important role in the photodecomposition, in which the lower concentration of curcumin and the higher amount of TiO2 have a correlation to the obtainment of higher photodecomposition rate.

Abstract

Analysis of ball-milling process under various conditions (i.e. working volume, milling time, and material load) on the material properties (i.e. chemical composition, as well as particle size and morphology), product yield, and electricity consumption was investigated. Turmeric (curcuma longa) was used as a model of size-reduced organic material due to its thermally and chemically stability, and fragile. Thus, clear examination on the size-reduction phenomenon during the milling process can be done without considering any reaction as well as time-consuming process. Results showed that working volume is prospective to control the characteristics of product. Working volume manages the shear stress and the collision phenomena during the process. Specifically, the lower working volume led to the production of particles with blunt-edged morphology and sizes of several micrometers. Although working volume is potentially used for managing the final particle size, this parameter has a direct impact to the product yield and electricity consumption. Adjustment of the milling time is also important due to its relation to breaking material and electrical consumption.

Abstract

Silica is the most abundant components in the earth's crust and is made by way of synthesis for use in the application of technology. Silica are generally found commercially as alkoxysilane compounds (i.e such as tetraethylorthosilicate (TEOS), sodium silicate, and tetramethylorthosilicat). However, these compounds can have a negative impact on health. Thus, further approaches to find the source of silica that is safer, cheaper, and more environmentally friendly is inevitable. However, not all summary journals are thoroughly discussed the silica sources. Further, method of isolation and application of the silica from agricultural waste is limited. This paper reported studied several sources of silica derived from agricultural waste, such as rice husk, rice straw, corn cobs, and bagasse. In addition, this paper discussed also about the method of isolation of silica from agricultural waste, and its application as a catalyst.
