Abstract

Work-related traffic accidents represent a significant public health and economic issue in rapidly urbanising areas like Batam City, Indonesia. As a major industrial and trade hub, Batam experiences high volumes of commuter traffic, exacerbating road safety challenges. Despite this, a critical gap exists in current research and policy where gender-specific vulnerabilities—including differences in risk perception, vehicle choice, and travel patterns—are often overlooked. This study aims to fill this gap by investigating these nuanced gender disparities in work-related traffic accidents in Batam. Furthermore, it seeks to propose actionable strategies for systematically integrating gender considerations into the established Safe System framework, thereby providing evidence-based recommendations for stakeholders. A quantitative research design was employed, utilising a structured questionnaire distributed via Google Forms to a cohort of 498 randomly sampled workers in Batam City. The collected data were analysed using descriptive statistics and simple linear regression in SPSS. The analysis specifically examined the relationship between positive safety perceptions and experiences (BTHD) and workers' perceived vulnerability and wariness (BTHC) during their commute. The results revealed a statistically significant positive relationship (B = 0.626, p < .001). Counter-intuitively, this indicates that as respondents' positive safety perceptions increased, their self-reported level of wariness and alertness also rose. This key finding suggests that a sense of safety among Batam's workforce is not a passive state leading to complacency but is actively constructed upon a state of heightened awareness. The study concludes that achieving the goal of zero fatalities requires the Safe System approach to evolve beyond physical infrastructure to incorporate these complex psychological drivers and gender-specific factors. These findings offer policymakers critical insights for developing more inclusive, equitable, and effective road safety interventions.

Abstract

Batam City with existing drainage issues is a major hindrance to its performance. Road construction is always related to drainage funcitionality. The existing condition, with heavily piled-up sediments, causes a significant issue for Batam, Nagoya, and Batam Kota sub–district. Sediment accumulation in the drainage base depth causes a reduction in drainage volume, resulting in backflow and disturbance of water flow dynamics. This slowly erupts to the surface and cause flooding in roadways. Flooding roadways cause traffic congestion, erosion of the road structure, and accumulation of sediments due to the intensity of rainfall. Which resulting damages to drainage system. By installing sediment traps on manholes and lower base drainage, it can help reduce the buildup of sediments on the drainage base. Which will reduce flood risk and allow water to flow smoothly without resulting in backflow.

Abstract

The growth of urban activity in Batam City as a major industrial and commercial area has significantly increased traffic volume and caused traffic congestion and road safety issues. As a result, the local government has widened a number of main roads in an effort to increase infrastructure capacity, but the impact on traffic safety still needs to be comprehensively evaluated. This study aims to analyze the effect of road widening on traffic safety levels in Batam City. The research method used is a pre-post analysis approach, combining secondary data on traffic accidents for the period 2021-2025 from the Barelang Police Traffic Unit and primary data in the form of a perception survey of 350 road users on sections that have undergone widening. The results show that road widening contributes to improved traffic flow and shapes the public's perception that the number of accidents is declining. However, official accident data still shows an increase in the number of incidents, even though the fatality rate has relatively decreased and there is a tendency for vehicle speeds to increase. Therefore, road widening cannot be used as a sole solution to improve traffic safety and needs to be integrated with speed control, improved road safety facilities, and sustainable traffic management
