Abstract

This study employs critical discourse analysis to investigate how High Net Worth Individuals (HNWIs) in Makassar, Indonesia, construct meaning around sustainable investment and ESG principles. Through elite interviews with 15–20 participants, findings reveal that global ESG frameworks undergo active localization, filtered through maritime cultural identity, hyper-local environmental priorities (e.g., coastal erosion, fisheries), and indigenous values like gotong royong (cooperation) and Siri’ (honor). Participants navigate tensions between profit imperatives and ethical stewardship by emphasizing pragmatic risk mitigation, intergenerational responsibility, and regionally visible impact. The research highlights how HNWIs strategically distance themselves from Western-centric ESG norms, positioning themselves as cultural mediators who reconcile global standards with Eastern Indonesia’s socio-ecological realities. These insights advocate for culturally literate sustainable finance strategies in emerging markets.
Social Construction of Sharia Investment Among Millennial Muslims in Makassar: An Ethnographic Study Amin, Andi Mustika

Abstract

This ethnographic study explores how millennial Muslims in Makassar construct their understanding and practice of Sharia-compliant investment through social processes and community interactions. Using participant observation, in-depth interviews, and focus group discussions with 32 participants across five investment communities, the research reveals three distinct pathways of knowledge construction: scholarly consultation, peer learning, and personal interpretation. The findings demonstrate that millennial Muslim investors actively negotiate religious principles with contemporary financial realities through collective deliberation processes, creating hybrid forms of "neo-Islamic finance" that integrate traditional religious compliance with environmental and social responsibility concerns. Technology plays a crucial role in facilitating communal investment practices, enabling participants to coordinate decisions through digital platforms while maintaining reverence for traditional religious authority. The study reveals that investment communities serve as sites of identity formation where participants construct modern Muslim professional identities that successfully integrate faith-based principles with material prosperity. The collective decision-making processes challenge the individualistic assumptions underlying conventional financial theory, demonstrating how peer networks serve as knowledge brokers in transforming abstract religious principles into practical investment criteria. These communities develop sophisticated screening practices and innovative investment structures, including informal investment pools that address both religious requirements and economic constraints. The research contributes to the understanding of contemporary Islamic finance practices and provides insights for developing culturally sensitive financial products and services tailored to millennial Muslim investors.
From Cash to Code: The Cultural Meaning of Financial Literacy among Women Traders in Makassar’s Traditional Markets Amin, Andi Mustika

Abstract

This qualitative phenomenological study explores how women traders in Makassar’s traditional markets experience and reinterpret financial literacy amid the cultural transition from cash-based to digital transactions. Drawing on in-depth interviews, participant observation, and focus group discussions across three major markets, the research conceptualizes financial literacy not merely as technical knowledge but as a relational and embodied practice rooted in trust, tactility, and moral economy. Findings reveal four major themes: (1) Tangibility and Embodiment of Value, where cash serves as sensory proof of labor and integrity; (2) Hybrid Trust Architectures, in which kinship and intergenerational mediation bridge confidence in digital systems; (3) Socially Situated Learning, where collective teaching through peer exchange sustains adaptive financial practices; and (4) Moral Reframing through Digital Visibility, where transaction records acquire new ethical significance as tools of proof and accountability. The study demonstrates that financial literacy evolves through communal learning, affective relationships, and moral negotiation, rather than through formal instruction alone. It argues that policies and fintech initiatives promoting financial inclusion must integrate cultural sensitivity, strengthen social mediators, and respect tactile economies to ensure sustainable adoption. Ultimately, the transition “from cash to code” represents not only a technological shift but a redefinition of value, trust, and moral responsibility in Makassar’s local markets.

Abstract

This phenomenological study examines how Bugis–Makassar mother-entrepreneurs (mompreneurs) in South Sulawesi, Indonesia, experience and navigate digital loan services. Using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA), the research engaged fifteen mompreneurs through in-depth interviews, participant observation, and digital trace analysis to understand their lived experiences with fintech lending. Findings reveal that digital loans represent a dualistic phenomenon—providing crucial business liquidity while simultaneously generating moral anxiety tied to cultural values of siri' (honor) and familial obligations. Participants developed hybrid financial strategies that blend digital borrowing with traditional networks, while algorithmic systems created generational divides in technological adaptation. The study identifies five key themes: immediate business agility, moral-social anxiety, algorithmic impersonality, gendered household negotiation, and collective digital practices. These findings underscore how fintech adoption is mediated through cultural frameworks and social relationships rather than being a purely technical process. The research contributes to developing culturally responsive fintech policies that recognize moral economies and support women's digital financial inclusion through community-centered design.
