Abstract

Menstruation is an important event in a woman's life. Abnormal body mass index will have an impact on the occurrence of menstrual disorders, including no menstruation (amenorrhea), irregular menstruation and pain during menstruation (dysmenorrhea). The main problem of the menstrual cycle is still a problem of adolescent reproductive health. This study aims to determine the relationship between body mass index and the menstrual cycle in young women. The research design used was cross-sectional. The study population was 115 class XII students of Bakti Indonesia Medika Ponorogo Health Vocational School. The sample size was 91 female students taken by simple random sampling. The data collection instruments used were questionnaires, scales and microtoise. Data was collected through interviews and measurements of height and weight carried out by the researchers themselves. The collected data were analyzed using the Chi-square test and calculating the prevalence ratio. The results showed that 74.7% of respondents had a normal body mass index and 71.4% had normal menstrual cycles. The results of the Chi-square test showed p-value = 0.004, so it was interpreted that there was a relationship between body mass index and the menstrual cycle. The prevalence ratio was 2.6 (more than 1), meaning that body mass index is a risk factor for changes in the menstrual cycle. It was further concluded that the menstrual cycle is related to body mass index. Keywords: body mass index; menstrual cycle; teenage girl ABSTRAK Menstruasi merupakan peristiwa penting dalam kehidupan seorang perempuan.
