Abstract

To achieve good quality care as caregivers, families must have mechanisms to help them deal with difficult situations and minimize the risk of recurrence. Families often experience high emotional stress from seeing patients struggling with schizophrenic symptoms. Family resilience, often interpreted as the ability to overcome, adapt, and recover from challenges in caring for schizophrenic patients, involves various aspects, including emotional and social support, effective communication, understanding of schizophrenia, and the family's ability to manage challenging situations. .. This quantitative research is a cross-sectional design within three months at the Asylum Hospital. Prof. HB. Saanin Padang, with a total of 152 people, was analyzed using the Spearman rho test. The results showed that family resilience and caregiver burden had a reasonably strong relationship with the recurrence of schizophrenic patients in Padang City. Family resilience, which tends to be high, is influenced by the majority of the female sex group with child status and is not distracted by work because most decide not to work permanently. The condition of resilience is inversely proportional to the burden of caregivers, which are generally in the low category.

Abstract

Adolescents are exposed to a variety of stressors during the challenging adolescent transition phase. Nowadays, adolescents are more susceptible to mental health issues, which are reportedly becoming more prevalent globally. Involve schools in initiatives to address adolescent mental health to raise teenage understanding and awareness. Adolescents' mental health status can be assessed by mental health screening and education, and mental health education can help them know more about their mental health. This activity aims to expand students' awareness of mental health issues at public junior high schools in Padang. The IDASS-Y adolescent health self-reporting instrument was used to implement the intervention. The dissemination of information about adolescents' mental health issues and strategies for preventing them served as the basis for educational initiatives. According to the activity's findings, 25 students in Junior High School had mild depression (92.6%), one who had moderate depression (3.7%), and one who had severe depression (3.7%). The prevalence of anxiety among SMPN 23 students was 25 mildly anxious individuals (92.6%) and two moderately anxious individuals (7.4%). Twenty participants (74.1%) reported light stress, six (22.2%) reported moderate stress, and one (3.7%) reported severe stress. The knowledge score has improved before and during mental health education—the importance of involving schools in mental health management, including education and screening.

Abstract

Peripheral Arterial Disease (PAD) is the third leading cause of atheroskeric vascular morbidity in coronary heart disease. The ankle-brachial index (ABI) is one way to assess peripheral arteries. This activity aims to identify people who are at risk or suffer from PAD. The method used is a medical examination, which includes ABI values, blood pressure, cholesterol levels, blood sugar, and uric acid. This medical examination was conducted on 41 people in RT 02 RW 06 Pasar Ambacang, Padang City. The screening results found that 17.07% of respondents had ABI values higher than 1.3 (severely calcified vessel), and 14.62% had ABI values in the range of 0.71-0.9 (mild obstruction). This activity also found respondents with first-stage hypertension (29.26%), second-stage hypertension (2.44%), high cholesterol levels (56.09%), high blood sugar levels (7.31%), and uric acid levels exceeding normal limits (7.31%). Screening efforts can be a preventive measure.

Abstract

Background: Adolescence is a transitional phase from childhood to adulthood, characterized by various biological, psychological, and social changes. Adolescents living in coastal regions are exposed to social-environmental risk factors that can affect their emotional wellbeing, primarily due to the demanding and unpredictable nature of coastal communities. These challenging and volatile circumstances can have a negative impact on adolescents’ emotions, making them more vulnerable to mental and emotional disorders. Objective: This study aimed to examine the self-concept and its differences according to sociodemographic factors among adolescents residing in coastal areas of Indonesia. Methods: A cross-sectional design was employed for this study, which involved 644 adolescents living in coastal regions of Indonesia, specifically in the West Sumatra and Bali provinces. The Tennessee Self Concept Scale (TSCS) 2nd Edition Short Form was used to assess self-concept from August to September 2022. Descriptive statistics, Independent-t-test, and One-way ANOVA were utilized for data analysis. Results: The findings revealed that adolescents in coastal areas had a high level of self-concept. A statistically significant difference was discovered in the overall self-concept according to gender (p = 0.002). Similarly, a significant difference was observed in the physical domain based on class level (p = 0.019). Regarding the personal domain, significant differences were identified according to age (p = 0.030), class level (p = 0.030), parent's marital status (p = 0.030), father's education (p = 0.05), and family income (p = 0.01). Furthermore, in the family domain, significant differences were found based on parents’ marital status (p <0.001) and adolescents’ residence status (p = 0.002). Additionally, a significant difference in the academic domain was observed with respect to gender (p = 0.001). However, no significant differences were noted in the moral ethics and social domains across all sociodemographic variables (p >0.05). Conclusion: This study emphasizes the need for attention from various stakeholders, including mental health nurses, to prioritize interventions to promote positive self-concept among adolescents, consider sociodemographic factors that influence self-concept, and address areas of dissatisfaction such as moral behavior and academic/work efficiency. Incorporating family support and nurturing positive parent-child relationships are also important for fostering a healthy self-concept in adolescents.

Abstract

Background: Self-care behavior is crucial in preventing chronic diseases, such as hypertension, which has become highly prevalent in Indonesia. Hypertension, often referred to as the “silent killer” due to its asymptomatic nature, can easily go unnoticed. Neglecting its treatment can lead to severe complications, including heart disease, heart failure, and stroke. Despite adults with hypertension feeling well, embracing self-care behavior, including making healthy lifestyle choices, disease management, and enhancing life quality, remains essential. Objective: This study aimed to describe the self-care behavior of adult patients with hypertension in Indonesia. Methods: A cross-sectional study design was employed, involving 270 participants selected through consecutive sampling. Data were collected between 15 March and 4 April 2023, using the Hypertension Blood Pressure Self Care Profile (HBP-SCP) questionnaire in six public healthcare centers in Padang City, West Sumatra, Indonesia. The data were analyzed using descriptive analysis, Mann-Whitney, and Kruskal-Wallis tests. Results: The self-care behavior among adult patients with hypertension was at a moderate level (Mean = 49.78, SD = 6.64), and it had significant differences according to ethnicity (p = 0.041), marital status (p = 0.017), and body mass index (p = 0.008). Conclusion: The findings highlight the influence of diverse ethnic backgrounds, various marital statuses, and differing body mass index levels, which may lead to distinct approaches to managing hypertension. These results offer valuable insights for nurses and other healthcare professionals to develop comprehensive strategies to enhance self-care among adult patients with hypertension.

Abstract

The purpose of this community service activity is to carry out mental health screening as an effort to detect mental health problems in adolescents early. The method of implementing the activities consists of 3 stages: the preparation stage, the implementation of screening with the SRQ-29 instrument (Self-Reporting Questionnaire 29), and education. One hundred seventy-six teenage students in one of the Padang City State Senior High Schools participated in this activity. Adolescents who participated consisted of grades 10, 11, and 12. The results of these activities found that more than half of adolescents (56.8%) were identified as having symptoms of neurosis (anxiety and depression), more than half of adolescents (63.6%) were identified with psychotic symptoms, most of the adolescents (77.3%) were identified PTSD symptoms, and about 0.6% of adolescents were identified as using psychoactive substances. The results illustrate that most adolescents experience mental health problems in the form of anxiety and depression, psychotic, and PTSD symptoms that require further attention and treatment. For this reason, the attention and active participation of all parties, such as the government (education office, health office, schools) and families, overcome seriously adolescent mental health problems. Improving the function of guidance and counseling services (BK) in schools is very important. Counseling and scheduled mental health education can increase adolescent awareness and understanding of mental health.
