Abstract

The conflict over the Bangkonol Landfill (TPA Bangkonol) in Pandeglang Regency, Banten Province, escalated during 2024–2025, involving local government, communities, and the media. This study analyzes the dynamics of public communication by focusing on community resistance, media framing, and the government’s crisis response. A qualitative case study was conducted through interviews, document analysis, and media review. Findings indicate that the absence of participatory communication triggered strong community resistance, while the media amplified the dispute by framing it as an environmental crisis and highlighting weak policy legitimacy. These dynamics align with agenda-setting and framing theories, which explain how media influence public opinion. The issue was further politicized by local political rivals, and digital platforms became arenas for mobilization, consistent with uses and gratifications theory. This shows that communication failure not only fueled resistance but also opened space for politicization and accelerated conflict escalation. The study recommends strengthening official communication channels, ensuring community involvement from the planning stage, and expediting the transition of the landfill to a sanitary system.

Abstract

Abstract

The Kuta Ciamis Traditional Village is one of the Sundanese indigenous communities that still preserves its ancestral heritage. The existence of the Kuta Traditional Village to this day is inseparable from the combination of natural beauty, traditional cultural heritage, and mystical aura maintained by the local residents from generation to generation. Located on the border of West Java and Central Java, the uniqueness and local wisdom found in Kuta Village are the main elements in forming a strong and attractive branding for tourists. This study aims to determine and explain how the branding process of Kuta Traditional Village as one of the cultural tourism destinations based on local wisdom in West Java was formed. The research method was carried out qualitatively by collecting data through observations about the lives of indigenous residents and the existence of traditional institutions, interviews with traditional leaders and literature studies from documents, books, journals and other relevant references about indigenous communities. The results of the study indicate that the branding of the "Sacred Cultural Village" in Kuta Traditional Village is reflected in the local cultural identity and traditional symbols communicated to the public interpersonally and through the media. The conclusion of the study shows that the formation of cultural tourism branding is a marketing communication strategy for tourism destinations based on local wisdom in West Java which can strengthen community participation in preserving local cultural identity values and increasing visibility, interest, and tourist visits.

Abstract

Background: The value of environmental awareness in rural communities has increased in recent years, particularly in areas where traditional customs intersect with contemporary ecological concerns. It is evident in the Indonesian village of Cisayong, located in southern West Java. Purpose: This article employed Giddens’ framework to show how civil society promoted environmental awareness in the village. Methods: This research was conducted through observation, FGDs, and in-depth interviews with local leaders in Cisayong Village. Results: The research indicated that civil society emerges from community, religious, and youth leaders who collectively embrace the environment. Moreover, each of these civil societies has effectively communicated messages about environmental awareness and garnered recognition from the village government for their efforts. Conclusion: The village community exhibits distinctive socio-cultural and economic characteristics that limit its ability to address environmental challenges effectively. However, through the initiative of local leaders, these limitations have become opportunities for developing community-based environmental awareness rooted in religion and culture. Implication: This finding suggested the empowerment of local actors as agents of change to build environmentally conscious social structures. Strengthening these initiatives can improve long-term environmental resilience in similar rural contexts.

Abstract

Digital transformation has reshaped the ways in which indigenous communities engage with the outside world, particularly in constructing and negotiating their cultural identities. This study explores how the Outer Baduy community in Banten employs social media as both a tool of digital mediation and a space for negotiating cultural identity in the midst of modern influences and cultural commodification. Adopting a qualitative approach through media ethnography, the research draws on in-depth interviews with four key informants: one traditional leader (jaro) and three local digital content creators, supplemented by field observations and social media content analysis. The findings reveal that younger generations strategically use social media to produce visual narratives highlighting local cultural practices, such as weaving, farming, and communal living. These digital expressions serve not only as a means of promoting cultural and economic activities but also as a medium for representing identity. At the same time, challenges emerge regarding the commodification of sacred values and the influence of algorithmic pressures, which shape both aesthetics and cultural meanings. In response, the community employs strategies of symbolic selection, guidance from traditional leaders, and digital literacy grounded in local wisdom to safeguard cultural integrity. This study underscores the importance of preserving the narrative sovereignty of indigenous communities within digital spaces and recommends fostering a communication ecosystem that remains attentive to local cultural values.

Abstract

The impact of socio-cultural literacy and health communication on childbirth service preferences in rural Indramayu, Indonesia is investigated in this paper.  Even with national insurance programs providing better access to official medical treatments, many women still chose traditional birth attendants (TBAs) because of cultural comfort, trust, and local knowledge systems. The study consisted in 19 purposefully chosen informants: eight midwives, three TBAs, and eight moms who lately gave birth or were pregnant using a descriptive qualitative technique and a case study design.  Limited field observations and semi-structured interviews helped to gather data; Braun and Clarke's framework helped them to be thematically analyzed. The results expose seven main themes: (1) medical vs. traditional rationality in service preference; (2) fragmented and experience-based health literacy; (3) inclusive midwife-TBA partnerships enabled by local health centers; (4) symbolic rituals as informal health education; (5) structural barriers and access to healthcare; (6) interpersonal and culturally embedded communication channels; and (7) the collective role of family-particularly husbands and seniors-in decision-making.  According to the study, rather than only cognitive knowledge, cultural and social practices shape health literacy; moreover, communication strategies anchored in local symbols and trust are more successful than top-down messaging.  This study adds fresh understanding of community-based mother health systems combining indigenous knowledge with biomedical methods. The study has pragmatic ramifications for creating culturally sensitive health education plans that acknowledge the agency of modern and traditional health actors. It underlines the requirement of inclusive, culturally responsive communication to enhance rural mother health outcomes.

Abstract

Background: In the ever changing world of digital politics, women in politics often have to cope with the double challenge of preserving their institutional authority while also meeting gendered expectations of being relevant. Empathy is frequently seen as an inherent personality trait; nonetheless, its use as a strategic tool in digital political strategy remains inadequately explored, particularly within the framework of the Indonesian legislature. Purpose: This study aims to investigate how empathic political communication is strategically managed and configured as a form of symbolic capital by female members of the Indonesian House of Representatives on social media. Methods: Employing qualitative multimodal content analysis, this study examines the textual, visual, and interactional elements of posts published between July and October 2025. Results: The findings show the empathy functions not only as an emotional expression but also as a strategic communication resource. This in configured through four main patterns: building moral legitimacy, gender-based political branding, crisis responsive communication, and grassroot relation engagement. These patterns produce political identities such as moral advocates, caring mothers leaders, institutional guardians, and grassroots allies. Thus, empathy operates as a symbolic political capital used to strengthen legitimacy, maintain public trust, and negotiate gender expectations in digital politics. Conclusion: The study concludes that empathetic social media communication is a political strategy deliberately cultivated by female legislators to navigate authority, legitimacy, and gender-specific public expectations, rather than being merely spontaneous emotional expressions. In the Indonesian legislature, empathy is an important symbolic instrument for building a genuine digital political identity while maintaining in touch with the people. Implications: This research contributes to the literature by conceptualizing empathy as a communication management resource rather than a purely emotional trait.

Abstract

This paper investigates how the indigenous community of Kampung Naga, West Java, Indonesia uses cultural communication techniques to preserve a traditional way of life under growing modern challenges. The study reveals five main themes by means of a qualitative phenomenological approach and thematic analysis: value inheritance through role modelling, symbolic communication in cultural practices, selective adaptation to modern culture, ecological and spiritual relationships with nature, and the role of social rituals in maintaining cultural identity. In-depth interviews, participatory observation, and documentation involving nine informants-elders, birth attendants, women, youth, and returnees from metropolitan areas-data were gathered. The results indicate that instead of passive preservation, the Kampung Naga community maintains its way of life by means of a dynamic process of cultural negotiation. Daily activities and intergenerational role models help people to assimilate cultural beliefs rather than formal education. Symbols like holy woods, birth ceremonies, and bans on power use are communicative devices mediating identity, spirituality, and resistance. These techniques mirror socio-cultural, semiotic, and phenomenological communication traditions in which meaning is manifested in action and group memory

Abstract

Documentary film scriptwriting is a crucial element in structuring and delivering information coherently to audiences. This article examines the application of expository narrative in the scriptwriting of the documentary film Mindful Sip: Matcha Beyond the Trend, which addresses the social phenomenon of matcha consumption among Generation Z in Indonesia. The creative process was conducted through pre-production, production, and post-production stages, with scriptwriting as the primary focus. The narrative is structured through three sequences aligned with the three-act framework: sequence orientation introduces the matcha phenomenon contextually and factually; sequence development elaborates the issue across social, scientific, and personal dimensions; and Sequence resolution synthesizes the overall exposition while offering a non-judgmental space for audience reflection. The findings indicate that expository narrative, applied through these three sequences, enables coherent, communicative, and critically reflective scriptwriting. This approach demonstrates how documentary scriptwriting can function not merely as a textual framework, but as the primary instrument in constructing meaningful narratives about contemporary social phenomena.

Abstract

The development of documentary films in Indonesia has encouraged the need for presenting reality in an informative manner while maintaining strong visual quality. Documentary films were no longer viewed merely as a medium for recording facts, but also as a creative medium capable of delivering social messages through a cinematic approach. Cinematography became an important element because it played a role in constructing meaning, atmosphere, and viewing experience through well-directed visual management. This study discussed the management of cinematographic elements by the Director of Photography in the documentary film “Mindful Sip: Matcha Beyond The Trend”, which raised the phenomenon of increasing matcha consumption as part of the lifestyle trend among young people. The method used was a creative approach based on expository documentary through the stages of pre-production, production, and post-production. The entire creation process was focused on concept planning, image capturing, and visual as well as narrative refinement so that the documentary message could be conveyed effectively. The results showed that matcha had developed into a symbol of a healthy, productive, and aesthetic lifestyle, yet awareness of responsible consumption was often neglected. The management of camera angle, camera movement, type of shot, and composition was proven to strengthen visual representation and help audiences understand the phenomenon more critically. Therefore, cinematography played an important role not only in producing attractive visuals, but also in clarifying the documentary’s message regarding the relationship between consumption trends and bodily experience.
