Abstract

This study examines the effectiveness of Task-Based Language Teaching (TBLT) in enhancing speaking skills among 29 EFL junior secondary students at SMPN 3 Polongbangkeng Utara, Indonesia. Involving 29 junior high school students, this research employs a pre-experimental one-group pretest-posttest design. The results revealed that TBLT significantly improved students' speaking proficiency. The mean score for the pre-test was 34.90 (SD = 10.844), while the post-test mean score increased to 68.83 (SD = 11.680). A paired-sample t-test confirmed a statistically significant difference between the pre-test and post-test scores (t = 21.95, p < .001), indicating a substantial enhancement in speaking skills following the implementation of TBLT. The calculated effect size of Cohen's d = 2.99 supports the conclusion that TBLT had a large and significant impact on the improvement of students' speaking abilities. This significant improvement suggests that TBLT provides an effective method for boosting speaking proficiency in language learners. Furthermore, the results underline the importance of using meaningful tasks that encourage active language use and communication in real-world contexts. The findings offer strong evidence that TBLT can be a highly effective approach to enhance speaking skills, especially in contexts where traditional teaching methods may fall short. Generally, the study reveals that TBLT can lead to significant improvements in students' speaking skills, offering valuable insights into its potential as an instructional strategy for language learning. Abstract

Kegiatan pengabdian kepada masyarakat ini dilaksanakan di SMA Negeri 6 Bombana pada tanggal 11–12 Oktober 2025 dengan tujuan untuk meningkatkan motivasi belajar bahasa Inggris siswa melalui kegiatan pembinaan yang bersifat interaktif dan partisipatif. Kegiatan ini diinisiasi oleh dosen Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris Universitas Sembilanbelas November Kolaka dengan melibatkan dua orang dosen, dua mahasiswa, dan didampingi oleh dua guru bahasa Inggris dari sekolah mitra. Sebanyak 45 siswa berpartisipasi dalam kegiatan ini, terdiri atas 20 siswa kelas X dan 25 siswa kelas XI. Permasalahan utama yang dihadapi sekolah mitra adalah rendahnya motivasi belajar dan rasa percaya diri siswa dalam menggunakan bahasa Inggris, yang dipengaruhi oleh keterbatasan kesempatan berlatih serta persepsi bahwa bahasa Inggris merupakan mata pelajaran yang sulit. Kegiatan ini dilaksanakan melalui penyampaian materi motivasi belajar, diskusi kelompok, dan praktik berbicara dalam konteks komunikatif dengan pendekatan humanistik. Hasil kegiatan menunjukkan peningkatan antusiasme dan partisipasi siswa selama proses pembinaan, munculnya keberanian untuk berbicara menggunakan bahasa Inggris, serta terbentuknya sikap positif terhadap pembelajaran bahasa Inggris. Kegiatan ini menjadi wujud nyata kolaborasi antara perguruan tinggi dan sekolah dalam mendukung pengembangan motivasi belajar bahasa Inggris di kalangan siswa sekolah menengah.

Abstract

This study aims to develop interactive multimedia learning materials on the solar system to improve elementary school students' understanding of science concepts and independent learning. The research was motivated by the suboptimal use of technology-based learning facilities due to teachers' limited abilities, resulting in conventional, teacher-centered learning that has an impact on students' low conceptual understanding and learning independence. The research method used was the ADDIE Research and Development (R&D) model, which includes the stages of analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation. The research subjects consisted of sixth-grade elementary school teachers and students divided into experimental and control classes. Data were collected through concept comprehension tests and self-assessment scales of learning independence using pre-tests and post-tests, then analyzed using N-Gain, independent t-tests, paired t-tests, and MANOVA. The results showed that the N-Gain value for concept understanding in the experimental class was 0.5523 and for learning independence was 0.451, both of which were in the moderate category and higher than the control class, which was in the low category. The independent t-test results show a significant post-test difference between the experimental and control classes in concept comprehension and learning independence. The paired t-test results show a significant increase from the pre-test to the post-test in the experimental class in science concept comprehension and learning independence compared to the control class. The MANOVA test results show that interactive learning multimedia has a significant simultaneous effect on students' understanding of science concepts and learning independence (Sig. = 0.000). Thus, interactive learning multimedia on the solar system material is proven to be effective in improving elementary school students' understanding of concepts and learning independence.
