Abstract

This study aims to analyze the effectiveness of using YouTube as a learning medium in improving listening skills (maharah istima’) among students at Ma’had Tsurayya. A descriptive qualitative approach was used to examine the role of teachers, learning strategies, and students’ perceptions of YouTube utilization. Data were collected through direct classroom observation and a review of relevant literature. The results of the study indicate that YouTube is effective in improving understanding and listening skills in Arabic due to its ease of access, variety of materials, and interactive audiovisual features. The advantages of YouTube include flexible learning times, engaging visualizations of materials, and the ability to repeat content as needed. However, its effectiveness heavily depends on the active role of teachers in providing additional explanations and guidance to avoid misunderstandings. Challenges include the speed of native speakers' pronunciation, limited vocabulary, and audio clarity. Solutions implemented include the use of dictionaries, repeated listening exercises, and integration with other learning strategies.

Abstract

Background: Islamic education integrates knowledge, faith, and morality to foster holistic character building and sustainable social development, while addressing the existing research gap concerning the limited scholarly attention toward classical Islamic poetry in the context of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Objective: This study examines the values of Islamic education and their relevance to the SDGs as reflected in the poetry of Sayid Idrus bin Salim Al-Jufri through Roland Barthes’ semiotic framework, analyzing five selected stanzas (n = 5) from his poem al-‘Ilm. Method: Using a descriptive qualitative-analytical design, this research applies Barthes’ three levels of semiotic analysis denotative, connotative, and mythological to interpret educational, moral, and spiritual meanings. The five stanzas were selected through purposive sampling based on their representation of Al-Jufri’s educational and ethical values. The analysis was supported by semiotic tables, literature documentation, and validation through theoretical and source triangulation to ensure analytical reliability. Results: The findings reveal core Islamic educational values including the pursuit of knowledge, moral integrity, social responsibility, and devotion to God. These values align with SDG 4 (Quality Education), SDG 16 (Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions), and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals). The study also highlights the theoretical significance of integrating Barthesian semiotics with Islamic literary tradition, and its practical contribution to strengthening value-based educational discourse. Conclusion: The poem al-‘Ilm serves as an effective semiotic medium for value-based education, contributing to sustainable human development and offering insights for future research on sustainability-oriented Islamic education in the modern era.

Abstract

Listening comprehension (maharah istima’) is a foundational skill in Arabic language learning, particularly for beginner-level students in Islamic boarding schools. However, traditional teaching methods that rely heavily on textbooks and lectures often fail to engage students or support the development of effective listening skills. This study aims to explore the effectiveness of animated video-based learning media in enhancing students' listening abilities in Grade 1 of the Intensive Program at TMI Al-Amien Prenduan. Using a qualitative descriptive approach with a case study design, data were collected through classroom observations, in-depth interviews, and documentation. The findings reveal that the integration of animated videos significantly improves students’ auditory comprehension, vocabulary acquisition, pronunciation accuracy, and learning motivation. Contextual visuals paired with clear audio narration help students better understand Arabic conversations and imitate appropriate expressions and intonations. Furthermore, students exhibit increased engagement, confidence, and active participation during learning sessions. These results affirm the pedagogical value of animated videos as an innovative and effective medium for developing listening skills in Arabic, particularly within the unique educational environment of pesantren. The study recommends the broader implementation of digital multimedia in Arabic curricula to support more engaging and effective language acquisition. Abstract

The Gorontalo language, an Austronesian language spoken in Sulawesi, exhibits rich morphological processes that remain under-documented. As one of the regional languages of Eastern Indonesia, Gorontalo represents a crucial yet underrepresented component of Austronesian linguistic diversity, making its systematic description both timely and necessary. This study investigates its morphological typology, focusing on affixation, reduplication, and agglutinative structure to determine how words are formed and how the language fits within Austronesian morphological frameworks. The investigation is situated within contemporary debates in typology that view morphological systems as dynamic and sensitive to social and communicative pressures. While Gorontalo language is increasingly threatened by the dominance of Indonesian and declining intergenerational transmission, this research prioritizes structural analysis to capture its core morphological mechanisms before potential attrition accelerates. This urgency reflects broader concerns in language endangerment studies, where loss of morphology often precedes large-scale grammatical erosion. Employing a qualitative descriptive design, primary data were collected through field interviews with native speakers across various age groups and social backgrounds. The inclusion of multiple generations allows the study to capture ongoing morphological change alongside established usage patterns. Complementary data were drawn from oral narratives, traditional expressions, and informal conversations. Thematic analysis identified recurring morphological patterns, with attention to both form and sociocultural context. The analysis categorized affix types, examined reduplication functions, and assessed the degree of agglutination versus fusion in word formation. Results indicate that 18 active affixes (10 prefixes, 5 suffixes, and 3 confixes) were identified, demonstrating a highly productive system of affixation as the primary word-formation strategy. Reduplication functions flexibly, not only for plurality but also for aspect, intensity, and lexical derivation. Gorontalo displays predominantly agglutinative morphology, with clearly segmented morphemes combined cumulatively. However, morphophonemic fusion and simplified usage among younger speakers suggest a transitional typology, reflecting ongoing structural change. This study contributes empirical detail to Austronesian linguistics by documenting the morphological dynamics of an understudied language. These findings have direct pedagogical and typological implications, supporting language preservation initiatives, the development of local curricula, and the design of digital tools such, as morphological analyzers and learning applications. It challenges static typological classifications and offers practical insights for language preservation, local curriculum development, and digital documentation tool.

Abstract

The golden age of the Abbasid Dynasty (750–1258 CE) was a crucial phase in the history of Islamic civilization, marked by rapid advances in science, education, and culture. The caliphs, particularly Harun al-Rashid and Al-Ma'mun, played a significant role in promoting scientific activity through the establishment of institutions such as the Baitul Hikmah, which served as centers for translation, libraries, and scientific development. Arabic developed into the primary language of science, replacing Greek and Syriac, and became a medium for the transmission and innovation of knowledge from various civilizations, such as Greece, Persia, and India. This study aims to analyze the role of Arabic language and literature as the main pillars of the progress of Islamic civilization during the Abbasid Dynasty. The method used is a qualitative approach with a descriptive-analytical design through a literature study of relevant primary and secondary sources. The results show that Arabic not only functions as a means of communication, but also as a primary means of developing and producing knowledge, while Arabic literature developed rapidly through cross-cultural interactions and political support from the Caliphate. These findings confirm that intellectual progress during the Abbasid period significantly contributed to the development of global science and laid the foundation for modern civilization.

Abstract

This study examines the dynamics of Javanese wedding traditions that have retained their cultural essence despite acculturation with Arab culture and modernization. A qualitative, descriptive-analytical approach was used to observe traditional Javanese wedding ceremonies and how they have changed in response to external cultural influences. Data were obtained through direct observation of wedding ceremonies in Java and analyzed using triangulation techniques. The results show that, while Javanese weddings maintain traditional values such as togetherness and family harmony, elements of Javanese culture have been modified to align with Islamic values. For example, the accompaniment of the bride and groom with gamelan music and traditional dodot clothing has been replaced with sholawat and tambourines. The study also revealed changes in guest seating arrangements, with some families adopting the Arab tradition of separating male and female guests. This study provides insight into how Javanese culture remains alive and relevant by maintaining traditions while adapting to modernization and outside cultural influences. It also provides an example of cultural flexibility in the face of changing times.
