Abstract

The aim of this research is to explore the concept of systems thinking in relation to the specificities of systems thinking in science education by conducting a content analysis of studies published between 2010 and 2020. Most of the articles were published between 2017 and 2019. This study employs a descriptive content analysis method on 40 articles about systems thinking in science, utilizing a literature review of international articles. The instruments used include a content analysis format created by the researcher and two expert researchers. Doubtful data were discussed holistically in relation to the content analysis. The results of the research reveal the specificities of systems thinking within the science field. In the realm of chemistry, a systems-based approach through the integration of green chemistry and systemic synthesis questions has proven effective in enhancing systems thinking skills and awareness of sustainability. The application of molecular sustainability principles in chemistry education can lead students to complex thinking, with an understanding of chemistry linked to various systems such as social, economic, and environmental contexts, fostering a holistic understanding. Integrating systems thinking approaches in science education can enhance students' comprehension of the complexities of the real world and equip them with the necessary skills to address increasingly dynamic and interconnected global challenges. The practical implications of these findings highlight the importance of developing a systems-oriented curriculum to support more comprehensive and integrative learning

Abstract

This research aims to identify students' preconceptions about rare earth coordination chemistry. The method used in this research is exploratory interviews. This research involved 25 pre-service chemistry teacher at a university in West Java Province, Indonesia. The collected data was analyzed using qualitative content analysis. The research results showed that 60% of students were able to identify electronic waste as a source of valuable metals, but others did not know that there were rare earth metals contained in it. As many as 32% know ionic liquids as environmentally friendly solvents, but the majority of students do not understand the physicochemical properties of ionic liquids and the interactions between ionic liquids and rare earth metals. As many as 8% of students were able to explain the reaction to form rare earth metal coordination compounds correctly, while only 4% were able to explain the concept of luminescence in these compounds. These findings indicate the need for coordination chemistry course design that accommodates students' learning needs and links them to relevant environmental contexts to improve students' understanding and systems thinking skills.

Abstract

their families at home. Globally, there is a growing governmental policy to engage caregivers, families, and communities in the healthcare delivery system. Family caregivers (FCG) have taken responsibility for the day-to-day care of their ill loved ones at home. A cancer diagnosis is a major event for the person diagnosed and also for his or her family and caregivers. The caregiving activity has a significant impact on FCG’s quality of life (QOL). This study aimed to analyze the best predictor of FCG’s QOL of female cancer patients in a community setting. Methods: This cross-sectional study involved five Public Health Centers (PHCs) among 63 PHCs in Surabaya (7.94%), Indonesia, which were selected by one-stage cluster random sampling. There were 60 FCGs of female cancer patients who participated in this study (n = 60). The Caregiver Quality of Life – Cancer (CQOLC) was a valid and reliable instrument that was used to collect the data. Linear regression and one-way ANOVA tests were used in data analysis (α < .05). Ethical clearance was issued. Results: Most respondents were middle-aged married men with sufficient educational background and still actively working with sufficient income. Their QOL was mostly at a moderate level (Mean ± SD = 62.57 ± 16.23). Burden (p < 0.000), disruptiveness (p = 0.001), and financial concern (p < 0.000) were significantly different between the low, moderate, and high FCG’s QOL. The best predictor of FCG’s QOL of female cancer patients in a community setting was disruptiveness (R2 = 0.622; p < 0.000) compared to burden (R2 = 0.531; p < 0.000) and financial concern (R2 = 0.184; p = 0.001), especially when other family members have not shown interest in caregiving (R2 = 0.539; p < 0.000). Conclusions: FCG’s QOL of female cancer patients in a community setting is at a moderate level. Disruptiveness, burden, and financial concern could predict FCG’s QOL significantly. The other family members’ disinterest in caregiving which belongs to the disruptiveness domain is the best predictor of FCG’s QOL of female cancer patients in a community setting, which accounted for 53.9% variance of QOL in this population.

Abstract

Instruments for measuring problem-solving skills in physics education have primarily been developed in the context of classical physics. In contrast, the astronomy context, based on real phenomena, has remained relatively limited. One phenomenon closely related but not widely utilized as an assessment context was night sky brightness as an indicator of light pollution. Therefore, this study aimed to examine the feasibility of problem-solving skill instruments in the context of night sky brightness as an indicator of light pollution, as well as to describe physics education problem-solving skills. This study employed a quantitative descriptive design involving 75 students in physics education. The instrument was designed in the form of a contextual problem, covering four problem-solving stages and was analyzed using the Rasch Model. The analysis results indicated that the instrument met the feasibility criteria for use as a measurement tool for problem-solving skills. The use of this instrument provided an overview of students’ abilities at each problem-solving stage, so that the assessment did not focus solely on the final score but also on students’ thinking processes. Thus, this study contributed to the development of an astronomy-based assessment instrument that could be used as a diagnostic tool for problem-solving skills in physics learning.

Abstract

Background: Misconceptions related to force and Newton’s Laws continue to be widely observed in secondary physics classrooms, often emerging from students’ everyday reasoning and instructional approaches that prioritize formula application over conceptual understanding. Aim: This study seeks to examine how a Project-Based Learning design informed by the Understanding by Design framework supports students’ conceptual change in learning Newton’s Laws. Method: The study employed a mixed-methods experimental design involving Grade XI high school students. Students’ conceptions were identified using a four-tier diagnostic test administered before and after instruction, complemented by questionnaires and semi-structured interviews. Quantitative analysis focused on conceptual change categories and N-change values, while qualitative data were used to explore students’ reasoning processes during learning activities. Results: The results show that students initially demonstrated a high prevalence of misconceptions, particularly in relation to Newton’s Third Law. Following the learning intervention, several students exhibited shifts toward scientifically accepted conceptions. Nevertheless, the overall magnitude of conceptual change remained low, indicating that while improvement occurred, it was not evenly distributed across students. Conclusion: The findings suggest that a PjBL approach guided by the UbD framework can facilitate conceptual change in learning Newton’s Laws, especially in addressing persistent misconceptions. However, the limited level of change highlights the need for more refined instructional designs, longer learning durations, and the integration of isomorphic diagnostic assessments to achieve stronger and more consistent conceptual development.

Abstract

This study examines the financial performance of Bank Syariah Indonesia (BSI) after the merger by comparing the Income Statement Approach and the Value-Added Approach from the perspective of Sharia Enterprise Theory. The merger of three state-owned Islamic banks represents a strategic transformation that requires a comprehensive performance evaluation beyond conventional profit-based measures.  Using secondary data from BSI’s annual financial statements for the period 2020-2024, this study analyses profitability and efficiency indicators, including Return on Assets (ROA), Return on Equity (ROE), Net Profit Margin (NPM), and the Operating Expenses to Operating Income Ratio (BOPO). A paired sample t-test is employed to examine differences between the two performance measurement approaches. The results indicate that BSI experienced short-term performance adjustments in the early post-merger period, followed by gradual improvements in profitability and operational efficiency. The Value-Added Approach consistently produces higher profitability ratios than the Income Statement Approach, reflecting its broader measurement scope that captures value creation and distribution to multiple stakeholders. Statistically significant differences are found for ROA, ROE, and NPM, while no significant difference is observed for BOPO. Practically, the findings provide insights for Islamic bank management in evaluating post-merger performance, support regulators in promoting performance assessment aligned with Sharia principles, and highlight the relevance of value-added-based measurement for enhancing stakeholder accountability in Islamic banking institutions.

Abstract

Course-Based Undergraduate Research Experiences (CUREs) have gained increasing prominence as an innovative pedagogical model that integrates authentic research into the undergraduate curriculum. While extensive research has highlighted the general benefits of CUREs across STEM fields, a focused synthesis of their implementation and impact specifically within chemistry education remains underexplored. This narrative review addresses this gap by analyzing ten recent, peer-reviewed studies indexed in Scopus to characterize how CUREs are designed, implemented, and evaluated in undergraduate chemistry contexts. The findings demonstrate that CUREs shift traditional laboratory instruction toward inquiry-based, authentic research experiences that foster critical thinking, increase student engagement, and enhance retention in STEM, especially within inclusive learning environments. However, challenges such as faculty workload, scalability, and research output persist. By consolidating insights across current literature, this review contributes a field-specific understanding of CUREs in chemistry education and offers implications for curriculum design, institutional support, and future research directions. In doing so, it fills a critical gap in the literature and underscores the evolving role of CUREs in preparing the next generation of chemists through evidence-based, research-intensive teaching practices.

Abstract

STEM education has transitioned from a model characterized by passive learning and strict laboratory exercises to one focused on active inquiry, student autonomy, and research involvement. Central to this educational transformation are Course-Based Undergraduate Research Experiences (CUREs), which integrate genuine research into the curriculum. This review synthesizes 15 current studies from Scopus to examine the common focus between cures and STEM education. CUREs and reformed STEM pedagogies integrate authentic scientific practice, student-centered learning, and inclusive access to improve persistence, equity, and workforce readiness. By embedding research with uncertain outcomes into coursework, these approaches broaden participation, remove barriers, and build critical thinking, problem-solving, and communication skills. They also enhance scientific identity and self-efficacy, particularly for underrepresented students, supporting retention and success in STEM. Scalable and supported by national initiatives, CUREs show that high-impact, research-rich learning can be delivered widely without losing depth, preparing a skilled and diverse scientific community for complex challenges.
