Abstract

The Indonesian digital communication landscape is characterized by massive code-mixing (CM) phenomena reflecting Gen Z's hybrid identity. This study aims to synthesize CM semantic trends on digital platforms (TikTok , Instagram, WhatsApp) for the 2015-2025 period using Geoffrey Leech's seven types of meaning framework. Employing a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) based on PRISMA 2020 protocols, 25 high-quality articles (average MMAT score of 82%) were thematically analyzed. Findings indicate that CM is not a language deficit but a Society 5.0 adaptive strategy dominated by connotative (38%) and affective (28%) meanings to build cyber solidarity. Despite its prevalence, a pedagogical gap was identified where 68% of studies ignore social-reflective dimensions and the national curriculum remains laggard in responding to these dynamics. This study recommends a reorientation of digital literacy through contextual semantic modules to bridge language competence disparities in the global era.

Abstract

The escalation of the global climate crisis has necessitated a rigorous examination of how political leaders linguistically construct environmental realities to legitimize policy decisions. Despite extensive research on environmental communication, there remains a paucity of comparative critical discourse studies examining the linguistic dichotomy between Global North and Global South leaders within high-stakes economic forums. This study analyzes the rhetorical strategies employed by G20 leaders during the 2024 Summit to uncover how language serves as a tool for ideological dominance and evasion of responsibility. Utilizing Norman Fairclough’s Three-Dimensional Model of Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA), this qualitative study examines transcripts of keynote addresses from four G20 leaders. The analysis focuses on textual features, discursive practices, and broader social implications. The findings reveal a distinct divergence: Global North leaders predominantly utilize nominalization and passive voice to obfuscate agency regarding historical emissions, whereas Global South leaders employ high-modality affective language to frame climate change as an immediate existential threat requiring reparations. The study concludes that the discourse of "green growth" often functions as a hegemonic tool to maintain neoliberal economic status quos while feigning ecological urgency.

Abstract

Listening comprehension is a foundational yet challenging skill for EFL learners in Indonesia, primarily due to limited exposure to authentic spoken English and natural pronunciation. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of audio recording media in enhancing the listening comprehension of recount texts among tenth-grade students. Using a descriptive quantitative method, the research involved 33 students at SMA Tamansiswa Pematangsiantar as participants. Data were gathered through pre-test and post-test procedures utilizing a fill-in-the-blank listening instrument based on the recount text “My Holiday in Bali.” The findings demonstrate a substantial improvement in students' listening performance, with the mean score rising from 40.00 in the pre-test to 79.09 in the post-test, reflecting a 97.7% increase. Furthermore, the percentage of students meeting the Minimum Mastery Criterion (KKM ≥ 75) surged from 6.1% to 66.7%. The results indicate that audio recording media fosters a conducive learning environment by providing repeated exposure, enhancing auditory resilience, and allowing students to internalize linguistic input at their own pace. Pedagogically, this study underscores the necessity of integrating technology-driven media to support student-centered and contextualized learning, fully aligning with the Merdeka Belajar framework to cultivate more autonomous and motivated learners.

Abstract

English has become an essential communication tool in modern military contexts, particularly in multinational operations and international cooperation. However, many military personnel still experience difficulties in using English effectively for professional communication. This study aims to examine the role of English for Military Purposes (EMP) in enhancing military personnel’s communication skills. The research employed a descriptive qualitative design using a library research method and needs analysis guided by ESP theory. The findings reveal that while reading skills are dominant for interpreting technical manuals, there is a significant gap in speaking and listening proficiency required for operational tasks. The study concludes that a needs-based and task-oriented EMP program, incorporating authentic materials and simulations, can significantly improve communication effectiveness and confidence in military professional settings.

Abstract

Music has long been recognized as a powerful educational tool in promoting emotional engagement and enhancing language learning motivation. However, few studies have explored how religious or emotionally expressive songs can be used effectively in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) classrooms, especially within secondary education contexts. This study aims to analyze students’ perceptions toward the use of Beyoncé’s song “Ave Maria” as a medium to motivate English language learning at SMP Cinta Rakyat 3 Pematangsiantar. Employing a descriptive qualitative method, data were collected through classroom observations, open-ended questionnaires, and semi-structured interviews with eighth-grade students. The findings revealed that students demonstrated positive perceptions toward the use of the song, as its melody, emotional tone, and meaningful lyrics enhanced their understanding of vocabulary, pronunciation, and moral values. Moreover, the integration of music created a relaxed and enjoyable classroom atmosphere, which significantly increased students’ enthusiasm and participation. In conclusion, this study suggests that incorporating emotionally rich music, such as “Ave Maria,” can serve as an effective pedagogical tool to foster motivation and engagement in EFL learning environments.

Abstract

Umpasa is a fundamental oral tradition in Toba Batak culture, functioning as a medium for conveying blessings and spiritual messages. However, the functional shift between different ritual contexts, such as joyful weddings and solemn funerals, remains under-documented. This study aims to identify the types of communicative functions, determine their shifting dominance, and describe their linguistic realizations within Ulaon Unjuk and Ulaon Saur Matua. This research employs a qualitative descriptive method. The data consists of 20 selected umpasa utterances, analyzed using Roman Jakobson’s theory of communicative functions. The results reveal that only four of Jakobson’s six functions are present: poetic, conative, referential, and emotive. Phatic and metalingual functions are entirely absent, suggesting that umpasa is a fixed ritual text. Furthermore, function dominance is context-dependent. In Ulaon Unjuk, the poetic function is superior, as it prioritizes the aesthetic delivery of blessings and ancestral values through rhythmic metaphors. Conversely, in Ulaon Saur Matua, the conative function dominates, emphasizing the delivery of spiritual guidance, instructions, and social expectations for the bereaved family. These functions are realized through specific markers, such as nature-based metaphors and parallelism for the poetic function, and the optative particle "Sai" and address form "Hamu" for the conative function. In conclusion, umpasa serves as a sophisticated cultural vehicle that strategically adjusts its functional priority to reinforce cultural identity during major life transitions. Abstract

This research analyzes how parents use politeness strategies when communicating with their children during spontaneous conversations. It aims to determine the variety of strategies exhibited and their practical purpose in the communication process between parents and children. This qualitative analysis of the conversation uses a descriptive design; data were collected by carefully listening to and writing down the audio recordings from an identified parenting podcast episode where a parent interacts with their toddler during a spontaneous conversation. Data collected were analyzed using Brown and Levinson’s (1987) politeness theory to categorize identified strategies and how each was used for a particular interactional purpose. In summary, four categories of Politeness Strategies were discovered in the data analysis based on their contextualized practical uses: 1) Bald on Record,2) Positive,3) Negative and 4) Off Record. Bald on Record Strategies were found to be the most commonly used strategy for the purpose of clarity and directness in parent-child interaction. Positive politeness techniques were utilized to foster solidarity and encouragement, while negative politeness approaches allowed for decreased imposition and respect the autonomy of the child. Off-record techniques were predominantly employed to display playfulness and creativity. Overall, this research illustrates that both positive and negative politeness techniques act not only as a means of interaction but also represent a source of pragmatic resource for directing behaviour, sustaining interpersonal harmony, and aiding in the child’s social and linguistic growth within informal familial settings.

Abstract

Reading comprehension plays an important role in English language learning because it enables students to construct meaning, acquire knowledge, and develop language proficiency. However, many vocational school students still experience serious difficulties in understanding descriptive texts, which are an important part of the English language curriculum. Previous studies have highlighted that students often experience difficulties due to limited vocabulary, insufficient knowledge of grammar, lack of background understanding, and low motivation. However, few studies have examined this issue in the context of vocational education. Therefore, this study aims to investigate students' difficulties in understanding descriptive texts at SMK Swasta 1 Tamansiswa Pematangsiantar. This study uses a qualitative descriptive method involving observation, interviews, and document analysis to identify the types and causes of students' difficulties. The results of the study show that the main problems experienced by students are a lack of vocabulary mastery, difficulty recognizing the general structure of descriptive texts, misunderstanding of main ideas and specific information, and confusion about grammar, especially in the use of simple tenses and adjectives. In addition, low reading motivation and over-reliance on translation tools also have a negative impact on students' comprehension. This study concludes that these difficulties arise from linguistic, cognitive, and affective factors. The results of this study are expected to provide valuable insights for teachers to design more effective reading strategies and improve students' understanding of descriptive texts in English as a foreign language.
Experiential Metafunction Analysis on A Thousand Years Song by Christina Perri Lihardo Manik; Selviana Napitupulu

Abstract

This study analyzes the experiential metafunction in Christina Perri’s song A Thousand Years using Halliday’s Systemic Functional Linguistics, with emphasis on the transitivity system. A qualitative descriptive approach was employed by segmenting the lyrics into clauses and identifying process types, participants, and circumstances. The analysis reveals six process types, with mental processes dominating (39%), followed by relational (28%) and material processes (22%), while verbal, behavioral, and existential processes appear minimally. The findings indicate that the song constructs meaning primarily through emotional expression, psychological states, and identity rather than physical action. Linguistically, the transitivity patterns represent themes of eternal love, fear, hope, and emotional endurance. This study demonstrates that song lyrics serve as meaningful linguistic data for exploring experiential meaning and may be effectively applied in language learning contexts, particularly in the teaching of functional grammar and discourse analysis.
