Abstract

Technological advancements necessitate adaptation in the field of education, particularly for language teachers. This need cannot simply be accommodated in the classroom. In the process of adopting technology, teachers experience various processes that must be got through. This current study was aimed at filling the gap in the issues related to the complexity of MALL adoption in higher education. To fill the need for descriptive richness and picture the entire adoption process, a qualitative approach was used; specifically, Narrative Inquiry (NI). There was a total of three people who participated in the research. Data was gathered through the use of a narrative frame, an empty box, and a structured interview guide. The study's findings highlight the simultaneous and ongoing nature of the adoption process. Three distinct phases of adoption were identified by this research: acceptance (before use), usage (during use), and confirmation (after use), with three distinct evaluation procedures for each phase. Another important finding is that intention is not necessarily a drive to usage. There is review process that bridges the intention and usage. The process of intention and review are simultaneous. Nevertheless, whereas intention is likely immediate, the review takes longer period of decision making. The review process could be the answer to the debate in TAM studies related to the reasons of inconsistency of the intention to use to the usage.

Abstract

Poetry has been reported to promote language awareness and authentic learning sources. As poems are composed in carefully arranged words to form rhyming sounds with beautiful rhythm, the present study aimed to reveal EFL students' perceptions of using poetry to teach English vocabulary. As a qualitative research, the present study observed eighty-seven short essays on using English poems for improving students' vocabulary written by students in an English Language Education Department in Bali. It was revealed that the student-teachers perceived poetry to help improve students' acquisition of word form, use, and meaning. Forty-four students wrote poems that could improve students' understanding of English word forms; twenty-three students argued that poetry could improve students' pronunciation. Twenty-one participants believed poems could improve students' spelling. In terms of word meaning, a total of thirty vouched for the use of poetry for introducing figurative languages (twenty-three students), enhancing students' acquisition of colloquial vocabulary (eleven students), and familiarizing students with unfamiliar words (eleven participants). Nine students insisted that poems could be used to improve students' word use, whereas six students believed poems could display grammatical functions. At the same time, three participants recognized the use of poems for acquainting students with collocations. These results imply that future EFL teachers recognize the potential of bringing English poetry as a medium for improving their EFL students'' vocabulary, hinting at the need for further research on the systematic procedure of how to implement poetry into EFL classrooms. HIGHLIGHTS : Poetry, incorporating rhyme, figurative language, and diction, enables students to learncreative vocabulary through pronunciation, spelling, figurative language, colloquiallanguage, unfamiliar words, grammatical function, and collocation. Poetry comes in form of short and rich texts providing contextual sources for vocabularyelements. Hence, it can enhance vocabulary learning through engaging activities, butteachers must consider students' level and type. Vocabulary enhances students' receptive and productive skills, particularly writing.Poetry in EFL classes can enhance comprehension and consumption of complex texts, supporting the writing process and improving eloquence, ultimately affecting the qualityof writing results.

Abstract

AbstractPronunciation for Indonesian EFL students is tricky and challenging due to the different phonetic systems of the student's mother tongue and the target language. Integrating YouTube into English language learning could overcome these issues. The present study reviewed previous studies about the benefits of integrating YouTube as instructional media in promoting EFL students' pronunciation. This study was library research following George's (2008) model by selecting recent publications on the topic to summarize how YouTube videos affect students' English pronunciation and highlight a research gap that could be taken by future research. The review revealed that YouTube had benefitted students in aspects of pronunciation: stress, intonation, rhythm, voice quality, gestures, vowels, and consonants, although research on the application's use for improving students' rhythm is minimal despite the availability of relevant videos. This finding implies the need for more research on improving students' rhythm using YouTube video.

Abstract

A recent study suggests that poetry might offer unique insights into improving English language development. Despite these benefits, many language teachers avoid using poetry since teaching English through poetry in non-English-speaking countries is difficult. Poetry's ability to support language development has been overlooked due to teachers’ challenges. This shows a serious lack of understanding of teachers’ pedagogical skills in using literature to educate. Large-scale quantitative studies have examined teachers' experiences and challenges. Nevertheless, this study focuses on what they consider crucial pedagogical factors in employing poetry in English classes. This qualitative survey includes 15 English teachers. A teacher questionnaire was given to discuss their needs in constructing poetry-based English language learning practices, and interviews were performed to examine kindergarten and elementary school English language learning. The findings portrayed that poetry improves pupils' listening and speaking skills and vocabulary building. In addition, they thought that songs/lyrics and poetry should be used more in teaching and learning. A thematic analysis showed how teaching strategies, poem selection, and impact are varied.

Abstract

AbstractThis research aimed to fill the existing research gap by examining the relationship between SRL and the 21st Century skills in distance education, highlighting the significance of understanding how these competencies intersect to enhance remote learning outcomes. The research design of this study is a systematic literature review adopting George’s (2008) model. The data were collected through assigning codes, developing themes, comparing and conducting close scrutiny of the codes and themes using 48 articles as secondary data sources. After the data were collected, qualitative analysis was done. The findings of this article have mainly addressed the positive light of twenty-first-century learning. The 21st Century skills fall into three categories: learning, literacy, and life skills. Students’ SRL directly affects their self-efficacy towards distance learning, while other factors, such as readiness and motivation, are also very contributive. The component of self-regulation concerns students ' active learning and taking a reflective role in their cognition, behaviour, emotions, and motivation of academic functioning to fulfill the requirement of twenty-first-century skills. Distance education potentially provides an environment that helps students manage their way of thinking in a way aligned with the 21st Century's needs. Furthermore, within Islamic studies, this research contributes to an emerging discourse on how SRL strategies can be tailored to cultivate critical Islamic perspectives and knowledge acquisition in online educational settings. Abstract

AbstractThe research delves into code-switching among Indonesian speakers in the UK, covering the syntactic and functional reasons why they use code-switching in intra-sentential contexts by applying Poplack's theory in syntactic and Hoffmann's theory in functional. Data collection includes repeated video watching, taking notes, and categorising code-switching used in the video podcast. Those steps require repeated execution to ensure accurate and comprehensive data collection and analysis. After categorising and identifying patterns of code-switching, it is followed by interpreting the findings and making connections to Poplacks and Hoffmans’ theories which led to the conclusion-drawing. The analysis presents nine states of intra-sentential switching parts of speech and seven categories of code-switching functions. Of 134 instances of code-switching, 104 were intra-sentential, with ICs being the most common (32%). Speakers primarily used code-switching to discuss specific topics, accounting for 37.67% of all instances. The results indicate that speakers would rather negotiate higher units, such as clauses, because the language feature is part of their regular use of English in the UK. This study demonstrates how code-switching helps with communication and identity formation for bilingual speakers. In relevance for language education, code-switching, as a pedagogical tool, can enhance comprehension and participation in language education programs, particularly in more complexly multilingual classrooms. Future research should also examine code-switching in various cultural contexts and use interdisciplinary methodologies to fully fund this linguistic phenomenon. Abstract

YouTube has become one of the most visited social media globally. Its saturation in students' lives has triggered experiments and observations on the use of YouTube as learning media. This article discusses the use of YouTube videos to teach English language skills using George's literature review model. The databases for selecting the articles used as the data source in this study were Google scholar and ERIC. The relevant articles were published in reputable international journals and nationally accredited journals in the past ten years. Studies on the use of YouTube videos as a teaching medium indicate that using YouTube videos can improve students' listening, reading, speaking, and writing skills and solve their problems in mastering the skills. Furthermore, YouTube videos have been proven to help students solve their grammar difficulties and increase their vocabulary. YouTube videos are also agreed to have kept the students more interested, motivated, and enthusiastic towards English language learning. These results imply that relevant YouTube videos can provide good learning media for supporting students' learning of English as a Foreign Language.

Abstract

The present study aimed at analyzing round and dynamic characters to look into the various dimensions of the antagonist in Gaston Leroux's The Phantom of the Opera and to reveal positive characterizations of an antagonist who is otherwise condemned as inherently evil due to its narrative function. The research was done under textual analysis employing McKee's (2003) as the grounded research design. The data were obtained from Gaston Leroux's Novel (1910), The Phantom of the Opera, in which Erik, the main antagonist, was focused the most. The data were gathered through some instruments, including notes and a table of classifications. The present study figures out some of the antagonist’s favorable characterizations even when he lived in difficult situations: talented singer, skillful entertainer, tenacious songwriter, and faithful lover. These findings imply that favorable values can be obtained even from the antagonists, rendering readers to be more critical in judging characters.
