Abstract

This present study explored the representation of environmental harmony in Prince Caspian by C.S. Lewis through the lens of local framework, Palemahan derived from Balinese philosophy called Tri Hita Karana. Former studies in Prince Caspian mostly utilized moral, religious, or western eco-critical perspectives, that tend to view environments or nature as objects that need to be protected or managed, while overlooking local philosophical views that regard nature as a living and sacred partner in human existence. This study therefore applies Palemahan as an alternative interpretative lens, employing qualitative interpretive data analysis with an interactive model proposed by Miles, Huberman, and Saldana (2014). The data were obtained from a close reading of the 2008 HarperCollins e-book of Prince Caspian, focusing on Lucy Pevensie’s characterization and her interactions with the natural environment. The findings show Lucy’s engagement with the environment reflects Palemahan values through the affectionate gesture, respect, and emotional connection rather than obligation or domination. Her relationship with the environment emerged from the harmonious feeling from within, aligned with the Palemahan view that see nature carries a sacred presence.  Conceptually, this study highlights Tri Hita Karana, particularly Palemahan as the interpretative framework that is meaningful in literary analysis. Pedagogically, the findings suggest that children’s literature can introduce environmental awareness rooted in harmony, not merely responsibility.

Abstract

Despite the growing recognition of positive effects on children's physical, cognitive, social and emotional development through outdoor learning within early childhood education (ECE), these practices are inconsistently integrated into ECE curricula. Current study analyses bibliometric research to explore the trend in fitness training and highlights pertinent authors who conducted valuable research on this issue. Through DimensionAI system, 43 publications were found using “outdoor learning” AND "early childhood" in Titles and Abstracts fields; Among them: After the application of inclusion criteria for OA (open access) articles by English language indexed also ownership as an open repository through Dimensions we selected a total number n =18 articles which had been published between years from 2015 to date. Based on Microsoft Excel, VOSviewer was employed to construct the co-authorship networks of authors and characterize patterns in terms of citation or between subfields. Analysis indicates a marked increase in research activity over the last few years, which is reflective of an increased interest in outdoor learning. At the same time, it identifies limitations such a focus on as minority of scholars influencing outdoor learning research and limited incorporation into larger educational frameworks. More research is needed on practical challenges and for this generation, in resource-constrained settings. These results also underscore the need to broaden both representation within research and practical approaches of outdoor early education. Findings from the study of research provide a snapshot on what we know and do not know, as well promising directions for researchers to continue with their work in order to help reduce inequity.

Abstract

Global children’s literature is often examined from the perspectives of aesthetics and universal moral messages without being contextually linked to the local cultural values of readers. Consequently, the potential of children’s literature as a medium for character education based on local wisdom has not been fully utilized. This study aims to analyze, evaluate, and interpret the reflection of Pawongan values, as part of the Tri Hita Karana philosophy, in the characterization of the Big Friendly Giant (BFG) in Roald Dahl’s novel The BFG. The research employs a qualitative approach with a descriptive-interpretative design. The subject of the study is a single fictional character, the BFG, with units of analysis consisting of the character’s actions, dialogues, and interpersonal interactions across various narrative sequences and sub-sequences. Data were collected through documentation studies involving intensive and repeated readings of the novel text using research instruments. Data analysis was conducted using the interactive qualitative analysis model by Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña, which includes data collection, data condensation, data display, and conclusion drawing and verification. The findings indicate that the BFG consistently reflects five core Pawongan values: responsibility, communicative behavior, tolerance, respect, and perseverance, with responsibility and communication being the most dominant values. Overall, the study concludes that global children’s literature can serve as an effective medium for character education when interpreted through the lens of local wisdom. The study’s implications emphasize the importance of integrating local cultural values into literary studies and EFL instruction to strengthen contextual and meaningful character education.

Abstract

This study examines how Instagram advertisements reconstruct the cultural meaning of rings through mythological signification. Traditionally associated with interpersonal bonds, romantic commitment, and marital status, rings are increasingly being redefined through digital advertising as symbols of broader ideological values. Using Roland Barthes’ theory of mythology, this qualitative study analyses two Instagram advertisements: UNICEF India’s Promise Ring campaign and the Gabit Smart Ring advertisement. The analysis focuses on verbal text, visual imagery, colour schemes, typography, product presentation, and compositional design to identify how denotative signs are transformed into connotative meanings and ideological myths. The findings show that UNICEF resignifies the ring as a symbol of humanitarian commitment and social responsibility, while Gabit constructs the ring as a symbol of self-care, discipline, and personal optimization. Although the two advertisements promote different values—collective moral duty and individual self-improvement—they both demonstrate how advertising naturalizes culturally constructed meanings through carefully selected semiotic elements. This study contributes to advertising semiotics by extending Barthes’ mythological framework to Instagram-based visual marketing and by showing how a familiar material object can be reinterpreted through digital advertising to support competing ideological narratives.
