Abstract

Science process skills are one of the important skills that students must have. This is because it can improve students' basic competencies, which include the formation of scientific attitudes, as well as their ability to solve problems. The STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) approach is considered capable of encouraging students to improve these skills and solve problems in an integrated manner from an early age. This is because STEM is an approach that integrates science, technology, engineering and mathematics into one learning process, so that it will focus students on solving problems related to everyday life. The purpose of this article is to examine how the application of the STEM approach improves students' science process skills. The method used in this article is a systematic literature review. Literature reviews are carried out by analyzing various references related to the research topic. Data collection was carried out by following the PRISMA guidelines sourced from two databases, namely Google Scholar and Scopus, with a time span of 2015–2024 through the assistance of the Publish or Perish 8 (PoP) application. A total of 15 articles were obtained which were used as research data that were analyzed. The results of this study concluded that the application of the STEM approach can improve students' science process skills positively. Furthermore, teachers must be able to improve their skills in applying this STEM approach in teaching and learning activities in the classroom.

Abstract

Both interpersonal communication and conformity are prominent variables for adolescent’s social development. Adolescent who fails to establish a good interpersonal communication may turn to an aggressive individual, while the one who is too conformist will be more vulnerable to engage in juvenile delinquency. This study aims to investigate the effect of assertive training on interpersonal communication and peer conformity of junior high school students. 12 eighth graders of Junior High School Muhammadiyah 2 Mlati Yogyakarta were involved in the study. The study applied a Quasi Experimental approach with non-equivalent-groups pretest-posttest design. To gather research data, the study used Interpersonal Communication and Peer Conformity Scales. The result shows that assertive training is effective to increase interpersonal communication and to decrease the level of peer conformity. Based on the result, the next study needs to compare the effect of assertive training and other behavioral techniques on the two variables.

Abstract

Self-disclosure is a vital component of effective interpersonal communication, especially among students. This study investigates the impact of assertiveness training on enhancing students' self-disclosure. An experimental design with a non-equivalent control group was utilized. Twelve students were divided into two groups: an experimental group receiving assertiveness training and a control group engaged in discussion techniques. Both groups underwent pretests and posttests. Data were analyzed using the Wilcoxon signed-rank test to determine changes in self-disclosure levels. Pretest results showed no significant difference in self-disclosure between the two groups (sig. = 0.066). Posttest results indicated a significant increase in self-disclosure within the experimental group following assertiveness training (sig. = 0.027). The control group showed no significant changes in self-disclosure after the intervention. The findings suggest that assertiveness training is effective in improving students' self-disclosure, whereas discussion techniques alone do not yield similar outcomes. Assertiveness training significantly enhances students' self-disclosure. This suggests its potential utility in educational settings to foster better interpersonal communication among students.

Abstract

Planned happenstance skills are crucial for thriving in an ever-changing environment, fostering adaptability in the face of uncertainty—an essential quality in today’s workforce. This study explores the role of planned happenstance skills as predictors of career adaptability among high school students, focusing on identifying the most influential dimensions. The study employed a quantitative approach, hypothesizing that (1) planned happenstance skills positively predict career adaptability, and (2) persistence contributes more significantly than other dimensions. A sample of 79 high school students in Wajo Regency was selected via simple random sampling. Data were collected using validated questionnaires measuring planned happenstance skills and career adaptability. Wolfowitz applied product-moment correlation to data analysis. Findings revealed a moderate positive correlation (r = 0.549, p 0.05), indicating that higher planned happenstance skills are associated with greater career adaptability. Among the dimensions, persistence accounted for the largest contribution (38%) to career adaptability. These results suggest that persistence is a critical factor in fostering career adaptability, reflecting students' ability to maintain effort despite challenges. This study contributes to the limited quantitative research on the relationship between planned happenstance skills and career adaptability in high school contexts. By highlighting the predictive role of planned happenstance skills, particularly persistence, this study provides actionable insights for career education programs. Schools can enhance students’ adaptability through targeted interventions fostering curiosity, flexibility, perseverance, optimism, and risk-taking, preparing them for unexpected career challenges.

Abstract

Learning discipline is a critical factor influencing academic success, particularly in socio-economically diverse rural settings. At Cipasung Islamic Middle School in Tasikmalaya, West Java, many students come from low-income families, and local socio-cultural conditions may hinder the development of effective learning behaviors. This study investigates the effectiveness of self-management and modeling techniques in improving students’ learning discipline. A quasi-experimental design with nonequivalent control groups was employed. The experimental group received counseling using self-management techniques, while the control group received counseling through modeling techniques. Both groups completed a pretest, underwent their respective interventions, and took a posttest to measure changes in discipline. Analysis revealed that the self-management group demonstrated a significantly higher increase in learning discipline compared to the modeling group. Statistical tests confirmed a notable difference in the effectiveness of the two techniques. Self-management techniques, which emphasize goal-setting, self-monitoring, and self-evaluation, proved more effective in fostering consistent learning discipline. These techniques appear to enhance students’ independence and responsibility for their academic behavior. Self-management-based counseling interventions show strong potential in improving student discipline, particularly in under-resourced educational settings. Schools without structured discipline programs are encouraged to adopt such methods to support student development.
