Abstract

Microplastics are synthetic solid particles or polymer matrices, with regular or irregular shapes and with sizes ranging from 1 μm to 5 mm. The impact of microplastics is very dangerous for living creatures and the natural environment. The results of microplastic separation using this method were optimal at an oven time of 12 hours, H2O2 concentration of 35% and Characteristics of functional groups using FTIR show that there is absorption of NH, CH, C=O and CN at wavelengths 3292.96, 2934.25, 1631.50, 1538.56 which are characteristic wavelengths for polyamide (PA) microplastics.

Abstract

One of the global problem is plastic waste, if not handled properly it will cause waterpollution. Plastic will degrade into samall pasrticles called microplastic. Polyperopylene plastic will be cut very small size and soaked in water and left in an open room for one month, so that the microplastic degrade naturally and become contaminated by organic impurities. The method used is Wet Peroxide Oxidation (WPO) which was adapted from the National Oceanic and atsmospheric (NOAA). Optimization was carried out the concentration of the Fe(II) catalyst with variations (0.025, 0.05, 0.075, 0.1, 0.125) M. The research result showed that the optimum condition for the Fe(II) consentration was 0.1 M as evidenced by the microplastic mass obtained. Characterization tests were carried out using a stereo microscope, and microplastics were found in the form of fragments and filament.

Abstract

Microplastic pollution in wastewater has become an urgent environmental issue due to its resistance to degradation and its potential to contaminate the food chain. This study aims to develop a natural coagulant based on chitosan extracted from the waste shells of Scylla serrata (blue swimming crab) as an eco-friendly solution for precipitating polystyrene (PS) microplastics in wastewater. Chitosan was obtained through demineralization, deproteinization, and deacetylation processes, and its effectiveness was tested in a solution containing 50 mg of pure PS microplastics in 250 ml of wastewater. The results showed that the optimum pH for coagulation was 5, achieving a removal efficiency of 98.4%. The optimal chitosan concentration was 0.5%, resulting in a 97.6% removal rate, while the optimal stirring speed of 700 rpm yielded an efficiency of 89.2%. These findings indicate that chitosan derived from crab shell waste is an effective and sustainable coagulant for mitigating microplastic pollution and holds promising potential for application in environmentally friendly wastewater treatment.

Abstract

Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET) microplastics are among the primary contaminants in aquatic environments and pose potential risks to human health. Coagulation is an effective method for reducing microplastics; however, conventional coagulants such as alum may leave harmful residues. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of chitosan synthesized from crab shell waste (Scylla serrata) as an eco-friendly biocoagulant in the coagulation of PET microplastics. Chitosan synthesis was carried out through three stages: demineralization, deproteinization, and deacetylation. The coagulation process was conducted under varying pH conditions (3, 5, 7, 9, and 11), with a chitosan dosage of 500 mg/L and a sedimentation time of 45 minutes. The results show that optimal conditions were achieved at pH 7, with microplastic removal efficiency reaching 98.4%. Characterization using Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), Particle Size Analyzer (PSA), and stereo microscopy confirmed successful floc formation and active interaction between chitosan and microplastics. The study concludes that chitosan derived from crab shell waste has strong potential as an effective and environmentally friendly alternative coagulant for treating water contaminated with microplastics.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the optimal pH and stirring speed for the identification and removal of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) microplastics using chitosan extracted from crab shell waste (Scylla serrata) through the coagulation method. The chitosan extraction process involved demineralization, deproteinization, and deacetylation stages. Subsequently, the extracted chitosan was applied as a coagulant in a solution containing PET microplastics under various pH levels and stirring speeds. The results indicate that chitosan derived from crab shell waste is effective in reducing microplastic concentrations, achieving a removal efficiency of 97.30% under optimal conditions of pH 6 and a stirring speed of 250 rpm. These findings highlight the significant potential of utilizing marine waste as an eco-friendly natural biopolymer in microplastic wastewater treatment. This research contributes to the advancement of sustainable biopolymer-based waste treatment technologies and supports efforts to mitigate microplastic pollution in aquatic environments.

Abstract

This study is motivated by the limited research on the use of natural biocoagulants for microplastic removal, despite the significant environmental and human health impacts of this phenomenon. The aim of this research is to analyze the influence of pH variation, chitosan dosage, and settling time on the coagulation effectiveness of polystyrene (PS) microplastics, and to determine the process's optimum conditions. A quantitative method was employed, using PS microplastic solution samples (30 mg/L) treated under varying pH levels (4–10), chitosan doses (10–50 mg/L), and settling times (10–50 minutes). Data were collected through laboratory experiments and analyzed using Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and stereo microscopy. The results indicate that optimum conditions were achieved at pH 6, with a chitosan dose of 30 mg/L and a settling time of 30 minutes, resulting in microplastic removal efficiency exceeding 90%. These findings support the theory of electrostatic interactions between the amine groups in chitosan and the negatively charged surface of microplastics. The main conclusion is that crab shell-derived chitosan is effective as an environmentally friendly biocoagulant for reducing microplastic content in wastewater. The study contributes to the growing literature on biocoagulation and offers practical recommendations for wastewater treatment managers to adopt sustainable natural coagulants. Moreover, it opens avenues for future research on chitosan-based composites for treating various types of microplastics.
