Abstract

The purpose of this study was to analyze gender-based biological concepts understanding at secondary school students of bilingual programs. 6 (sixth) problems, according to Bloom's taxonomy categorization, were designed consisted of: understanding, applying, analyzing, evaluating, and creating. The topics included cell, classification of the organism, ecology, plant anatomy and physiology, and human anatomy and physiology. Samples were 47 students from grade nine (secondary school) from one of bilingual secondary schools in Jakarta, Indonesia. Data obtained were analyzed quantitatively and qualitatively. The analysis showed that the average value of the concept comprehension test was 55.07, which was below the Minimum Criteria of Completeness score of 73. The average value of male students was 57.29, and the average value of female students was 52.85. There was no significant difference between the learning outcomes of male and female students. Some male students have higher achievements because they have more engagement in science than others. Students' low ability to understand the biology concept makes them unable to perform their competency at the stages of applying, analyzing, evaluating, and creating. Overall, data showed that the average level of understanding of biological concepts for secondary school of bilingual programs still tends to be low and needs to be continuously improved in the learning process. Hopefully, further studies can be conducted to develop the most appropriate learning method to improve biological concepts.

Abstract

The broad scope of biology and the many sources of biology reading requires eleven grade students to think critically about sorting out information to develop and support students' critical thinking skills. CirGi is an integration of the cooperative integrated reading and composition (CIRC) learning model and guided inquiry (GI) that emphasizes reading and writing activities, accompanied by guidance from the teacher. This study aimed to analyze the influence of CirGi's learning model on students' critical thinking skills. This research uses a quasi-experiment method with pre-post control group design. The sampling technique used purposive sampling, namely 104 high school students. Data collection was carried out using instruments of critical thinking skills in the form of essays, questionnaire responses of students to learning, and observation sheets of syntax implementation. The data analysis technique used was one-way ANCOVA. After controlling for the pretest scores, the CirGi learning model's influence on students' critical thinking skills was influenced. This learning model was appropriate for learning biology, so it can regrow the activities of reading science books that impact students' critical thinking skills.

Abstract

Critical and creative thinking skills are two essential aspects in 21st century learning. A simultaneous development of both skills can encourage students to find a correct, varied, and adaptive solution to a problem. This study identifies the influence of the unification of the Problem Based Learning (PBL) with the Reading, Mind mapping, and Sharing (RMS) on students' critical and creative thinking. The PBL and RMS are learning models that have complementary characteristics; therefore, they can be combined in a more effective learning strategy. The research method employs quasi-experimental research with non-equivalent pretest-post-test control groups design.  The research population includes students in Class XI MIPA in 2024/2025 academic year. The sampling uses a simple random sampling technique of 62 students. The research instruments consist of test and non-test instruments comprising 11 and 7 items of essay questions to measure critical thinking skills and creative thinking skills, respectively. The non-test instruments include a Student Worksheet and an observation sheet as secondary data. The pre-requisite test results in normally distributed and homogeneous data. The results of hypothesis test, MANOVA (p<0,05), indicate that the treatment of the unification of PBL with RMS influences student critical and creative thinking skills with a significance value of 0,001 and 0,002, respectively. The implementation of the unification of the PBL with RMS is proven to have a significant influence on student critical and creative thinking skills.

Abstract

Biological literacy is crucial for students to consider solutions to problems after analyzing them from various perspectives. The purpose of this research is to enhance biological literacy by using ARVi (Augmented Reality Virus) learning media. The research type is a quasi-experiment using a control group pretest-posttest design. The research instrument is a multiple-choice test validated by experts and empirical validation. The expert validation result shows an average score of 3.8, which can be interpreted as the test instrument being valid and suitable for use as a biological literacy measurement tool. The empirical validation result indicates that 3 questions are invalid, while 17 questions are valid as a biological literacy measurement tool. The reliability test result shows that the biological literacy test instrument has a reliability coefficient of 0.835, which can be interpreted as 70% confidence that the instrument can be trusted. The data analysis result shows that the data is normally distributed and not homogeneous. The independent t-test result is a t-statistic of 3.16 with a t-table of 1.98 at an α=0.05. This indicates that there is an increase in results between the control group to experimental group. The paired t-test result is a t-statistic of 15.7 with a t-table of 0.68 at an α=0.05. This indicates that there is an increase in posttest results compared to pretest results. This indicates that the ARVi media can enhance all aspects of biological literacy. The highest increase in biological literacy occurs in the nominal (82%), multidimensional (64%), structural (52%), and functional (32%).
