Abstract

Introduction: Diabetic foot ulcer (DFU) is a common complication of diabetes mellitus and remains a major global public health problem and a great challenge in the realm of clinical nursing care. Previous studies suggested that vibration can improve skin blood flow. However, there was no evidence to suggest that vibration had an effect on diabetic wound healing. Objectives:This study is to establish whether vibration therapy, as an adjunct to standard wound care, can significantly improve the healing of diabetic foot ulcers. Methods:In this prospective experimental study thirty one patients with grade I-III Wagner Grading of DFU in Sudarso General Hospital, Pontianak and Ade Muhammad Djoen General Hospital, Sintang, West Borneo, Indonesia, were randomly assigned to experimental group (EG, received standard wound care and vibration therapy, n = 16) and control group (CG, received standard wound care alone, n = 15). Results:There were significant differences in total duration of wound care between EG (21.12±10.86 days) and CG (41.47±18.61 days) (P = .04). There were also differences in percentage of wound healing as a function of time. By the end of week 2, percentage of wound healing in EG was 25% while in CG it was nil (P = .038). By the end of week 3, percentage of wound healing in EG was 50% while in CG it was 13.3%, (P = .029). By the end of week 4, percentage of wound healing in EG was 100% while in CG it was 66.7%, (P = .012). Conclusions:The findings of the present study shows that vibration therapy, as an adjunct to standard

Abstract

Adolescent girls aged 15-24 are at risk of contracting sexually transmitted diseases such as HIV/AIDS. The existence of adolescent promiscuity, inadequate knowledge of adolescents about HIV/AIDS, and lack of communication with parents on adolescent reproductive health are some related factors to the increased number of adolescents infected with sexually transmitted diseases and HIV/AIDS. Based on these situations, providing health education to adolescents is an alternative solution. The activities were carried out by implementing health education for teenage girls, conducted in four sessions. All sessions were held online, with interactive discussion methods, role play and demonstrations. A total of 18 adolescent girls participated in this activity. The final results showed that there is an increasing mean score of post-test on HIV knowledge (0.5), adolescent reproductive health (0.44), and self-esteem (0.39). There are no significant different between pre and post-test for the level of knowledge on HIV, adolescent reproductive health, adolescent risk behavior and self-esteem. Only risky behavior does not demonstrate an increase in the mean score. Providing health education to teenage girls has improved their knowledge and understanding of HIV/AIDS and adolescent reproductive health and increased adolescent self-esteem. However, these activities did not affect the score of teens’ behavior change. It was due to the duration of health education was not sufficient to change their behavior.

Abstract

This research aims to explore families' experiences as caregivers regarding how to care for stroke patients at home and to design a concept assessment model for caregivers in caring for patients at home. The method used is qualitative research with a phenomenological approach. The results of the study on the experiences of 16 family members as caregivers were summarized into four research themes, namely: control of risk factors that cause stroke by caregivers, changes in behavior and emotions of stroke patients and caregiver responses, strategies to improve self-care for stroke patients at home by caregivers, and strategies to increase muscle strength. The patient is at home with a caregiver. The draft instrument for the Cageur Stroke Score assessment is still a draft concept that needs to be developed in subsequent research. The images are risk factors for stroke, control of risk factors for stroke, amok, caregiver response, personal hygiene, skin integrity, and muscle strength. In conclusion, the family's experience as caregivers regarding how to care for stroke patients at home is the result of observing what nurses do while the patient is in hospital, and they are not ready to continue post-stroke care at home. The conceptual design of the assessment model for caregivers in caring for patients at home will be developed from research concept themes.
