Abstract

Abstract

This study aimed to develop and validate a Higher-Order Thinking Skills (HOTS)–based assessment instrument for Arabic language learning using the Al-‘Ashri textbook for 10th-grade students at an Islamic Senior High School. The research employed a Research and Development (R&D) design following the 4D model: Define, Design, Develop, and Disseminate. Several research instruments were utilized, including: (1) a needs analysis questionnaire and interview guidelines to identify issues in existing Arabic learning assessments; (2) validation sheets for material experts and linguists to evaluate content, construct, and language validity; (3) a HOTS-based test instrument consisting of 36 multiple-choice and 4 essay questions developed according to Bloom’s revised taxonomy (C4–C6); and (4) data analysis tools to measure validity, reliability, item difficulty, and discrimination indices processed using SPSS. Each instrument served a distinct purpose: the questionnaire and interviews gathered empirical data on field needs, the validation sheets assessed the feasibility and accuracy of content and language, and the HOTS-based test was empirically tested on 34 students to examine its psychometric properties. The material validation achieved a score of 94% and the language validation 84%, both categorized as “highly feasible.” Empirical testing showed that all items were valid (r-value > r-table = 0.338), with a reliability coefficient of r = 0.88 (high), item difficulty indices ranging from 0.15–0.85 (moderate), and discrimination indices indicating 38.89% good and 61.11% moderate items. These findings confirmed that the developed HOTS-based assessment instrument was valid, reliable, and effective for evaluating higher-order thinking skills in Arabic language learning at the senior high school level.

Abstract

Secondary-school Arabic teachers frequently report low student involvement, limited vocabulary growth, and weak listening comprehension when instruction relies mainly on lectures. To address these issues, the present study tested whether instructional games created with the Construct 2 engine could improve vocabulary and listening skills among junior-high learners. Adopting a quasi-experimental, non-equivalent control-group pretest-posttest design, the research arranged participants into three sections: an experimental group taught with Construct 2 games, a positive control group receiving enriched traditional lessons, and a negative control group exposed solely to lecture delivery. ANCOVA analysis uncovered a statistically significant group effect, F(2, 26) = 65.14, p = .021, accompanied by a large η² = 0.95. Follow-up post hoc comparisons showed that the experimental group (M = 75.6) outpaced both control sections (M = 68.9 and M = 67.2, p < .001). Overall, results indicate that game-based learning can reliably enhance receptive language abilities and warrants further adoption in Arabic classrooms. These findings speak directly to how teachers and administrators might structure courses and introduce new techniques, especially where money and materials are scarce.

Abstract

This study aims to develop Arabic sentence-writing learning materials (kitabah al-jumal) based on the Moodle Learning Management System for beginner-level students, particularly graduates of non-Islamic senior high schools who have limited foundational competence in Arabic. This research employed a Research and Development (R&D) design using the Hannafin and Peck model, which consists of analysis, design, and development and implementation stages, with the study limited to the product validation phase. The analysis stage involved observations, interviews with lecturers, and diagnostic tests to identify learners’ needs. The design stage produced five core instructional units, PDF modules, learning videos, and their integration into Moodle. The development and implementation stage comprised product construction and expert validation, while product feasibility was assessed using questionnaires and analyzed using percentage calculations. The material expert provided a score of 77% (good/feasible) with several revision notes related to linguistic accuracy, whereas media expert validation scored 90.67% (very feasible) with no required revisions. Limited implementation with 32 students indicated that the product was easy to use and supported comprehension of basic sentence structures, suggesting that the developed materials are feasible and appropriate for beginner learners and may serve as a foundation for further Moodle-based Arabic instruction in higher education.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to describe (1) a beginner-level Indonesian language textbook for Arabic speakers, (2) the effectiveness of a beginner-level Indonesian language textbook to improve Arabic speakers' vocabulary comprehension. This study was a type of experimental research before the experiment involving a single-group pretest-posttest design. The results showed that (1) this beginner-level BIPAR book consists of five chapters covering important topics in daily life, such as introductions, family, daily activities, traveling, and food and drinks, (2) The pretest results showed that the average initial ability of participants was below the expected standard (average score of 48.07 with the highest score of 87 and the lowest score of 20). However, after learning using the BIPAR book, the posttest results showed a significant increase with an average score of 84.20 (the highest score of 100 and the lowest score of 67). This increase reflects the effectiveness of the textbook in improving participants' understanding. The results of the statistical test using the paired sample t-test method showed a significant difference between the pretest and posttest scores. With a t-count value of -9.668 which is greater than the t-table, and a significance value of 0.000, the alternative hypothesis (H1) is accepted and the null hypothesis (H0) is rejected. This shows that the use of the BIPAR Beginner Level textbook has a significant influence in improving the language skills of training participants.
