Abstract

Chronic diseases have a significant impact on patients' quality of life, physically, psychologically and socially. Optimism, as part of positive psychology, plays an important role in helping patients face health challenges and improve their well-being. Objective: To identify the relationship between optimism and quality of life in patients with chronic diseases through a systematic review. Method: Following PRISMA 2020 guidelines, a comprehensive search across databases such as PubMed, Scopus, Sage, and Nature identified 7,340 articles, with six studies meeting the inclusion criteria. The review included only full-text, English-language quantitative studies—specifically case-control, cross-sectional, cohort, randomised controlled trials (RCTs), or quasi-experimental designs—that examined the relationship between optimism and quality of life in patients with chronic illnesses. There were no restrictions on publication year. Exclusion criteria comprised review articles, meta-analyses, and book or book chapter publications. Each included study was critically appraised using the CASP tool, which assessed research objectives, study design, sampling methods, measurement validity, bias control, and data analysis to ensure methodological rigour. Results: The analysis showed that optimism was positively associated with improved quality of life, especially in physical aspects such as reduced fatigue and improved mobility, as well as psychological aspects such as emotional and spiritual well-being. Social support also strengthened the impact of optimism on quality of life. Community-based interventions, occupational therapy, and multimodal approaches proved effective in increasing patient engagement in meaningful activities. Conclusions: Optimism is an important factor in improving the quality of life of chronic patients, and optimism-based interventions can be an effective strategy to support holistic patient well-being.

Abstract

Introduction: Emotional states significantly influence blood pressure among hypertensive patients. This study explores the impact of Islamic spiritual practices and emotional resilience in managing hypertension. Methods: We conducted in-depth interviews with 20 Muslim participants using a qualitative transcendental phenomenological approach. Result: Analysis revealed five primary themes: 1) Suppression of anger through Islamic teachings; 2) Enhanced resilience through religious practices; 3) Improvement in mental relaxation via prayer and dhikr; 4) Physical management to alleviate stress-related symptoms; 5) Socio-cultural activities fostering mental stability. Discussion: The findings suggest that Islamic spiritual practices contribute to emotional resilience by providing coping mechanisms that reduce psychological stress, a known factor in elevated blood pressure. Integrating spiritual, physical, and socio-cultural dimensions creates a holistic approach that supports better hypertension control. This model highlights the importance of culturally and spiritually tailored interventions in chronic disease management. Conclusion: Integrating Islamic spiritual, physical, and socio-cultural approaches enhances hypertension management and patient well-being.

Abstract

Preparedness is a series of activities carried out to anticipate disasters through organization and through appropriate and effective measures with the expected result being a significant reduction in the risk and losses caused by disasters. This study aims to explore nurses' perceptions regarding readiness to respond to disasters, nurses' preparedness in facing disasters, the role of nurses in disasters, obstacles and support in providing disaster nursing services. A descriptive qualitative approach was used in this study. Purposive sampling was used to select 10 nurses for focus group discussions and four nurses for in-depth interviews. Data were collected from January to February 2024 and analyzed using content analysis. Readiness to respond to disasters includes two subcategories: disaster experience and reasons to immediately respond to disasters. Health workers' preparedness in facing disasters consists of four subcategories: early warning, collaboration, resources, development of specific training. The role of health workers in disasters consists of two subcategories: preparedness stage and response stage. In addition, obstacles and support in providing disaster services consist of two subcategories: obstacles experienced and support needed in providing nursing services when a disaster occurs. The findings of this study can serve as a basis for developing disaster preparedness enhancement programs for nurses and other health professionals. The results of the study can also be used as important evidence to encourage disaster health service policies in an effort to reduce risks caused by disasters with the involvement of stakeholders.
