Abstract

Lung cancer patients often face significant psychosocial distress, negatively impacting their quality of life. To address this problem and equip patients with coping skills, the application of the concept of Theory of Unpleasant Symptoms (TOUS) has become a relevant assessment format. Ten cases of lung cancer patients managed by the Resident showed that EvidenceBased Nursing Practice (EBNP) interventions in the form of Mindfulness Loving-Kindness Meditation (MLKM) were effective in treating psychological distress. This intervention has been shown to significantly reduce levels of stress, anxiety, and depression in patients. Therefore, MLKM is recommended as an essential nursing intervention to help lung cancer patients cope with their psychological distress. Oncology nurses are advised to adopt the TOUS approach in managing lung cancer patients experiencing psychological problems, strengthening evidence-based nursing practices in holistic governance. Keywords: Lung Cancer, Psychological Distress, Loving Kindness Meditation, Discomfort Theory.

Abstract

Background: Cancer patients frequently experience nausea and vomiting, which can be caused by the disease process, the effects of therapy, and psychological factors. This condition can affect patients' nutrition, comfort, and quality of life. Pharmacological interventions are often ineffective, so non-pharmacological interventions are used as alternatives to help manage symptoms. Purpose: To determine the effectiveness of non-pharmacological interventions in reducing nausea and vomiting in cancer patients. Method: This systematic review was conducted based on PRISMA guidelines. Literature was obtained from three databases: PubMed, Scopus, and Science Direct. Inclusion criteria were full-text articles, published in English, published within the last 10 years (2015-2025), and using a quantitative design (RCTs and quasi-experimental). Of the 263,189 articles found, 12 met the inclusion criteria and were analyzed. Results: Non-pharmacological interventions such as yoga, the Benson relaxation technique, acupressure, reflexology, peppermint and Citrus aurantium aromatherapy, and ginger herbal supplements, were effective in reducing the intensity and frequency of nausea and vomiting. The effectiveness of interventions varies based on the type of therapy, duration of treatment, and patient characteristics, while a combination of physical and psychological interventions has shown better outcomes. Conclusion: Overall, non-pharmacological interventions can be implemented in nursing practice to improve the quality of life of cancer patients.   Keywords: Cancer Patients; Nausea and Vomiting; Non-Pharmacological Interventions.   Pendahuluan: Pasien kanker sering mengalami mual dan muntah yang dapat disebabkan oleh proses penyakit, efek terapi, dan faktor psikologis. Abstract

Stress and fatigue are common complaints among hemodialysis patients, significantly affecting their quality of life during long-term therapy. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of a modified Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) intervention on stress and fatigue in patients undergoing hemodialysis. The study adopted a quasi-experimental pretest-posttest control group design and employed simple random sampling. A total of 32 respondents participated, with 16 in each group. Stress was measured using the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS-10) and fatigue using the Functional Assessment of Chronic Illness Therapy-Fatigue (FACIT-F 40). The modified MBSR intervention was conducted for 30 minutes per session. Data were analyzed using paired t-tests and independent t-tests. The results showed significant differences in stress (MD = -13.12, t = -4.748, p < 0.001) and fatigue levels (MD = 7.34, t = -3.865, p = 0.001) between the intervention and control groups. These findings indicate that the modified MBSR therapy was effective in reducing stress and fatigue, with a p-value < 0.05 indicating statistical significance. Therefore, this modified MBSR therapy is a promising non-pharmacological nursing intervention that can be integrated into nursing care for chronic kidney failure patients experiencing stress and fatigue during hemodialysis.

Abstract

Psychological responses such as anxiety often arise from negative perceptions in situations perceived as threatening, even when they should not induce fear. These anxiety-induced responses can lead to increased hemodynamic parameters such as elevated blood pressure, heart rate, and respiratory rate—particularly prior to medical procedures. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of a digital virtual reality (VR)-based therapeutic intervention in reducing patient anxiety before undergoing gastrointestinal endoscopy. A quasi-experimental design was employed, involving both an experimental group and a control group using a pretest-posttest control group approach. Anxiety levels were measured using the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI). The intervention consisted of a 6-minute immersive VR video featuring calming mountain and beach scenery. A total of 50 respondents participated, with 25 in each group. Data were analyzed using paired and independent t-tests. Results showed no statistically significant difference in mean anxiety scores between the intervention and control groups (MD = 0.23, df = 48, t = 0.59, 95% CI: -0.56 to 1.03, p > 0.001). These findings suggest that the digital VR-based therapy was not statistically effective in reducing pre-endoscopy anxiety. Future interventions may require more immersive and interactive VR experiences—such as 360-degree simulations of endoscopic procedures—to achieve more substantial effects.

Abstract

Introduction: The increasing frequency and impact of disasters requires nurses to be adequately prepared and willing to respond. Previous studies have suggested that knowledge and skills alone are insufficient predictors of willingness to respond. This study aimed to explore factors influencing nurses’ willingness to respond to disasters beyond knowledge and skills and to identify strategies to enhance this willingness through disaster training. Methods: A qualitative descriptive study design was used. Data were collected from May to July 2020 through semi-structured interviews (n = 9) and focus group discussions (n = 10) involving nurses with earthquake response experiences in Indonesia. The participants were recruited using purposive and snowball sampling. Data were analyzed manually following Doyle’s qualitative descriptive approach to generate codes, categories, and themes. Results: Two major themes were identified: (1) dilemma in family matters, consisting of professional commitment, family safety, and family support; and (2) readiness to respond, including unprepared feelings and the role of disaster training. Family well-being emerged as a prerequisite for deployment, while realistic and simulation-based disaster training was perceived as essential for strengthening psychological readiness. Conclusions: Nurses’ willingness to respond to disasters is influenced not only by their knowledge and skills, but also by family related considerations and psychological preparedness. Disaster training programs should integrate family preparedness components and realistic simulation-based learning to enhance nurses’ readiness and willingness to respond effectively.
