Abstract

This study aimed to describe the use of classroom reading corners in reading activities and their effectiveness at SMPN 1 Makassar. This research employed a qualitative descriptive approach, drawing on data from teachers, the principal, and students. Data collection techniques used included observation, interviews, and documentation. Data analysis was conducted through data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion. The research results showed that reading corners are utilised as learning resources, instructional media, sources of information, and places for students to read during their spare time. In addition, the effectiveness of the reading corner is evident from the increased reading interest, student independence, and reduced time spent playing at school

Abstract

Ritual language does more than preserve cultural memory; it organizes meaning, legitimizes authority, and shapes gendered identities. Yet research on Pakkiok Bunting , a Makassar wedding poem, has remained descriptive, emphasizing form, function, and values without explaining how linguistic imagery, symbolic expressions, and ritual discourse construct ideology. This study examines how the language of Pakkiok Bunting  produces cultural meaning and reproduces social norms through critical semiotics and symbolic anthropology. Employing a qualitative interpretative-critical design, the study analyzed a textual corpus derived from Puisi-Puisi Makassar (1995), supported by observation, performance documentation, transcription, and translation. Data were examined across imagery, symbols, magical beliefs, gender representation, and customary authority. Trustworthiness was strengthened through triangulation, peer debriefing, an audit trail, and thick description. The findings demonstrate that visual, auditory, kinesthetic, and emotional imagery functions not merely as poetic ornamentation but as linguistic and semiotic resources that create sacredness, emotional intensity, and participation. Waves, mist, the moon, stars, drums, Daeng Bunting, and tears encode destiny, ritual legitimacy, family honor, lineage continuity, and maternal sacrifice. The poem consequently operates as performative-magical discourse: its language does not simply describe reality but helps constitute and legitimize it. It also constructs women as bearers of family dignity while normalizing their reproductive and emotional burdens. The study’s originality lies in conceptualizing ritual poetry as linguistic action and offering a transferable critical-semiotic model for examining how language, power, gender, and cultural memory are negotiated in oral traditions, with implications for culturally responsive preservation, language education, and intergenerational transmission.

Abstract

This study examined Indonesian language teachers' perceptions and understanding of the integration of technological pedagogical content knowledge (TPACK) in language instruction during the Teacher Professional Education (Pendidikan Profesi Guru [PPG]) program at Universitas Negeri Makassar. A quantitative descriptive survey was conducted with all 40 teachers in the cohort. Data were collected using a five-point Likert questionnaire covering content knowledge (CK), pedagogical knowledge (PK), and technological knowledge (TK) and were analyzed using descriptive statistics. The results indicated high perceived competence across all three domains. CK recorded the highest overall mean (M = 3.95), followed by TK (M = 3.88) and PK (M = 3.87). Teachers reported particular strength in contextualizing Indonesian language content, using online learning applications, and selecting instructional strategies. Comparatively lower-rated areas included diagnosing students' learning difficulties, designing critical-thinking activities, conducting language assessment, evaluating the affordances and limitations of digital media, and adapting to emerging technologies. These findings indicate a positive foundation for technology-enhanced Indonesian language instruction while underscoring the need for practice-based professional development that integrates content, pedagogy, and technology.

Abstract

This study examined differences in university students’ inferential reading comprehension according to the number of social media platforms they used. A quantitative comparative design was employed with 492 students from four universities in South Sulawesi, Indonesia. Data were collected through Microsoft Forms using a 15-item inferential reading comprehension test and analyzed using descriptive statistics, one-way ANOVA, and Tukey’s HSD post hoc test. Mean scores increased across the 1–3 platform group (M = 9.0385), the 4–6 platform group (M = 9.5818), and the 7–9 platform group (M = 9.7500). The ANOVA indicated a significant overall group difference, F (2, 489) = 3.561, p = .029, with a small effect size (η² = .014). Tukey’s HSD showed a significant difference only between the 1–3 and 4–6 platform groups. These findings suggest that the breadth of social media platform use is associated with inferential reading comprehension, although the association is small and not fully linear. The study highlights the potential value of integrating critical digital literacy into reading instruction in higher education.
