Abstract

Forest fragmentation has resulted in decreased wildlife habitat, which has triggered conflicts with humans due to the use of the same plants. This has been particularly contentious with the tapanuli orangutan. Research of the tapanuli orangutan (Pongo tapanuliensis) habitat is very limited. The aims of this research is to examine the latest habitat conditions, such as land cover, composition of vegetation, feed plant, and habitat carrying capacity to provide recommendations for habitat management in developing a mitigation policy of the human-tapanuli orangutan conflict. The research location is focused on the area of human-orangutan conflict in the Batang Toru Landscape in South Tapanuli Regency, which took place from August to December 2019. Vegetation analysis was conducted using the strip transect method with a total of 294 plots (11.76 ha). The number of species at the pole and tree levels were high with 149 species (46 families) and diversity index (H') > 3. Eighty feed plant species were found and expected to support the growth of the orangutan population of 247 individuals. The density and diversity of cultivated plant species in the buffer zone were high and consumption by orangutans resulted in human-tapanuli orangutan conflict, especially on durian (Durio zibethinus Murray). Conflict with humans will cause stress and disruption to the growth of the tapanuli orangutan. We recommend habitat management to mitigate conflict through patrols for monitoring habitat destruction in conservation forests, enrichment of feed plants in Forest Management Units, cultivation of orangutan non-food crops on community lands, and building a corridor with orangutan food crops with fruits that are not utilized by humans.

Abstract

One application that can be used to help teachers evaluate student learning is Quizizz. The partners involved in this service program are teachers at the Imelda Medan Tourism Vocational School whose knowledge about the use of Information Technology in providing learning evaluations to students is inadequate. This activity is located at the Imelda Medan Tourism Vocational School, East Medan sub-district, Medan City. This activity applies an in-house training method by providing information technology literacy training to support learning assessments to increase teachers' knowledge and skills regarding the creation, use and optimization of the use of Quizizz as a learning evaluation. This knowledge can be used in the learning process to make it more interesting and combined with conventional learning techniques. During the training, the service team provided materials and tutorials on using Quizizz. The results obtained from this activity were an increase in the skills and knowledge of teachers at Imelda Medan Tourism Vocational School regarding the use of information technology (Quizziz) in making learning assessments in support of the Merdeka Belajar program.

Abstract

In order to produce news that is interesting to read and easy for readers to understand, skills are needed, one of which is writing skills. With writing skills, someone can express events into news that needs to be written into a news article that is ready to be published in the mass media. The partners involved in this service program are students at SMA Negeri 1 Stabat where the main problem experienced by the partners is the students' lack of understanding in writing news texts. The location for this activity is at SMA Negeri 1 Stabat, Langkat, North Sumatra. This program consists of preparation, implementation, monitoring and evaluation stages. Training activities regarding this were carried out on 23 and 30 September 2023 offline and online using lecture, direct training, discussion and question and answer methods. The conclusion that can be drawn is that participants in service activities write news texts that must fulfill several rules that are in accordance with the genre-based approach, namely that there must be a news-worthy event, source, and answer the 5W=1H information. Furthermore, this activity is able to increase students' literacy in writing news as evidenced by the results of news written by students.

Abstract

The implementation of clean and healthy living behavior through the empowerment of BUMDes (Village-Owned Enterprises) management faces several challenges. These include: the limited capacity of BUMDes management to optimize partnerships, the low knowledge of BUMDes managers about clean and healthy living behavior practices, and the inadequate capacity of village officials in organizing partnerships and waste management to maintain and implement clean and healthy living behaviors, such as maintaining environmental cleanliness from organic and non-organic waste. This condition requires follow-up through community service programs. These activities aim to empower BUMDes managers and the community in adopting clean and healthy living behaviors. The objectives of this community service program are to help reduce partnership problems, enhance the knowledge of BUMDes managers as key drivers of tourism area development, improve their ability to manage village resources to boost the local economy, and strengthen the capacity of village officials in organizing partnerships and business management while promoting clean and healthy living behaviors. To achieve these objectives, the methods used in this program include: socialization and training on the implementation of clean and healthy living behaviors, participatory organization, and monitoring and evaluation. The outcomes of this socio-economic empowerment initiative include enabling the partner group (BUMDes management of Raya Village) to act as a driving force for the community, leveraging social capital, and sustainably developing BUMDes. This contributes to the overall improvement of community welfare through the enhancement of BUMDes operations.

Abstract

This paper aims to reveal the knowledge of the Gayo community about buffalo ethnotaxonomy so as to provide a good alternative for sustainability issues in maintaining local wisdom and identity. This research was conducted in Gayo Lues Regency using a qualitative approach because the main purpose of this study was to explore the knowledge and understanding of the Gayo community based on the emic perspective of the community regarding the classification of buffalo species. The data collection techniques used participatory observation, in-depth interviews, FGDs and document studies. The results showed that the knowledge of the Gayo community regarding the genetic ethnotaxonomy of buffalo can be seen from their ability to classify livestock types based on gender, skin color and horn shape owned by buffalo. There are six types of horns identified, namely: Caweng / Gaweng, Gonok, Gampang, Durung / Cakah, Rukup, Rebah, and Gope / Gupik. As for skin color, there are four categories, namely segem, jeged, impil-impil and sawak. The shape and characteristics possessed are indicators in determining the quality of the buffalo because it is correlated with the ability to endure, have energy and the quality of the meat produced. Knowledge of this matter is very useful for parties with an interest in the world of livestock to be used as a basis for policy making.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the influence of perceived value and brand experience on revisit intention through tourist satisfaction as an intervening variable at the Bukit Lawang ecotourism destination. This research employs an associative quantitative approach. The study population comprises tourists who have visited Bukit Lawang, with a sample of 180 respondents selected using purposive sampling. Primary data were collected through questionnaires, while secondary data were obtained through documentation studies. Data analysis utilized the Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) method with SmartPLS version 3.0 as the analytical tool. The results show that perceived value has a positive and significant effect on tourist satisfaction and revisit intention. However, brand experience does not influence tourist satisfaction but has a positive and significant effect on revisit intention. Tourist satisfaction mediates the effect of perceived value and brand experience on revisit intention. This research provides practical implications for tourism managers to improve service quality and create unique experiences to enhance tourists' intention to revisit.

Abstract

This study examines the implementation of infrastructure development in flood management in Medan Selayang District, Medan City. Medan Selayang, being one of the flood-prone areas in the city, faces significant challenges due to rapid urbanization, inadequate drainage systems, and poor waste management. The objective of this research is to assess the effectiveness of infrastructure interventions, such as the construction of drainage channels, flood retention ponds, and river embankments, in mitigating flood risks and improving public resilience. Data collection was conducted through field observations, interviews with local authorities and community members, and analysis of flood occurrence records. The results indicate that while there has been notable progress in infrastructure development, challenges remain in terms of the sustainability and maintenance of these systems. Issues such as insufficient funding, lack of coordination between stakeholders, and limited public awareness of flood prevention measures have hindered the optimal functioning of flood management infrastructure. This study emphasizes the need for integrated planning, enhanced community participation, and continued investment in infrastructure to effectively address flood risks in Medan Selayang. The findings provide valuable insights for policymakers and urban planners in designing more resili.
