Abstract

Density and  viability of spores  of  Beauveria bassiana (Bals.) Vuill. due to sub-cultures and media enriched, and  its virulence against larvae of Plutella xylostella (Linn.) This laboratory research was conducted to determine density and  viability of spores of Beauveria bassiana due to sub-cultures and media enriched, and to investigate the fungi virulence againts larvae of Plutella xylostella. B. bassiana was grown in Saborroud Dextrose Broth (SDB)  cultures enriched  with  cricket powder. The results showed  that the best sub-culture was the fourth sub-culture enriched with cricket powder, producing  6.05 x 108 spores/ml with 30.7% viability.  The highest  larval mortality was found in the second sub-culture enriched with cricket powder which was reach  78.33%.  The spore density and viability, and  virulence of B. bassiana  grown in sub-culture  without  cricket powder enrichment was consistently decreasing  from the second sub-culture to the eighth. Sub-cultures enriched with cricket powder  could increase density, viability, and virulence of  B. bassiana  in  every sub-culture. Overall, the  enrichment with  cricket powder  up to 0.5% could  increase the density, viability, and virulence of B. bassiana.

Abstract

Population and damage by Liriomyza sativa (Blanchard) (Diptera : Agromyzidae) and its parasitoid potential on cucumber fields. The objectives of this research were to figure out adult population of L. sativae and the damage caused by the larvae on cucumber leaves, to analyze the relationship between adult population and the number of leaf mining tunnel caused by L. sativae larvae, and to analyze the relationship betweeen the larval abundance and its parasitoids. The highest adult population (7.60 adults per trap) of L. sativae was found on 5 weeks after planting (WAP) and the lowest (3.20 adults per trap) was on 2 WAP. The highest damage intensity was found on 3 weeks after planting, amounted to 36.89% while the lowest was found on 6 weeks after planting, amounted to 12.12%. The regression coefficient showed that each adult of L. sativae caused one leaf mining tunnel. The higher the number of L. sativae larvae, the more the mining tunnels occured (R = 80.8%). The higher the number of L. sativae larvae in cucumber leaves, the more the larvae parasitized (R = 86.8%). Parasitoids found were Diglyphus sp. (Hymenoptera : Eulophidae) and Neochrysocharis sp. (Hymenoptera : Eulophidae). The highest apparent parasitism was found on 5 weeks after planting, amounted to 41.9%.

Abstract

Many problems arise in the cultivation of crops; one of these problems is insect pests that can threaten crop production. Integrated pest management is an alternative technique for managing the balance of the agricultural environment. Habitat manipulation by increasing plant diversity with refugia is considered an alternative way to maintain natural enemy in an agro ecosystem. The use of soybean as a refugium in a crop field is still limited. Research was conducted to investigate the diversity of predatory arthropods in soybean as a refugium in a chilli pepper crop field at the Agro-technology Training Centre (ATC) at the University of Sriwijaya. In this study, four varieties of soybean (Dena 1, Detam 3 PRIDA, Deja 1, and Devon 1) were used as refugia. Three observation methods were carried out using nets, pitfall traps and visual observation for 7 weeks. The results show that arthropod diversity in soybean plants comprised 6 orders with 10 families and 19 species. Odontoponera denticulata (Hymenoptera) was the most predominant arthropod predator, observed in 73% of all soybean varieties. The number of canopy-dwelling arthropod predators was similar in the four soybean varieties.

Abstract

Herlinda S, Sari JMP. 2021. Sustainable Urban Farming: Cultivation of black soldier fly (Hermetia illucens) to produce manure, and  fish and poultry feedstuff. In: Herlinda S et al. (Eds.), Prosiding Seminar Nasional Lahan Suboptimal ke-9 Tahun 2021, Palembang  20 Oktober 2021. pp. 27-37.  Palembang: Penerbit & Percetakan Universitas Sriwijaya (UNSRI).Urban farming in this pandemic era is a necessity for the community because in addition to entertainment, it can also increase income if it is done professionally. Manure  and fish and poultry feedstuff can be produced by cultivating black soldier fly (BSF) or Hermetia illucens in the yard using municipal organic waste. This paper aimed to review and come up with ideas on how to cultivate BSF to produce the manure, and fish and poultry feedstuff. Cultivation of BSF was carried out using organic materials or municipal organic waste. BSF has life stages starting from egg, larvae, pupae, and adult stage or fly. In the adult stage, the fly lays eggs next to a food source or organic waste that has pungent smell, then the eggs hatched into larvae. The larvae consumed and decomposed the organic material waste or the municipal organic waste or livestock feces into a final product in the form of organic fertilizer or “kasgot” (=BSF manure). The BSF manure contained nutrients for plants, such as NPK elements. BSF larvae and pupae contained a lot of protein and could be directly used for poultry and fish feedstuff which had high selling value. BSF cultivation was also useful in overcoming the municipal organic waste problems, such as food waste, livestock feces, and other organic wastes. BSF cultivation did not require a large area for farming and could be carried out in the house yard so it was very suitable for urban farming. Thus, this BSF has the potential to be developed to producing the organic fertilizer, it can also produce the fish and poultry feedstuff.

Abstract

Herlinda S. 2020. Use of natural enemies for biological control for insect pests of food crops and vegetables to support organic farming. In: Herlinda S et al. (Eds.), Prosiding Seminar Nasional Lahan Suboptimal ke-8 Tahun 2020, Palembang 20 Oktober 2020. pp. xx. Palembang: Penerbit & Percetakan Universitas Sriwijaya (UNSRI).In organic farming, synthetic fertilizers and pesticides are not used in crop cultivation so that the agricultural products are healthy and high quality. For this reason, the use of natural enemies should be applied to support the successful application of organic farming. This paper aimed to review and discuss the role of natural enemies in biological control for pests of food crops and vegetables. This study was conducted with a literature study approach. From the results of the review that natural enemies have been successfully utilized for biological control for insect pests of the food and vegetable crops, namely from the predators, parasitoids and entomopathogens. Predators, for example Pardosa pseudoannulata, have been used with a conservation approach to control rice insect pests (Nilaparvata lugens). Parasitoids, such as egg parasitoids (Trichogramma spp.) have been released to control Helicoverpa armigera eggs that attacked maize and soybeans. Entomopathogenic fungi that have been shown to kill insect pests of vegetables (Spodoptera litura) and maize (Spodoptera frugiperda) are Penicillium citrinum, Talaromyces diversus, Beauveria bassiana, and Metarhizium anisopliae. So, natural enemies are very useful in controlling pests of food crops and vegetables. The presence and persistence of natural enemies in the field can support the success in application of organic farming.
