Abstract

The pests that attack each plant phase also varies. The aimed of this study was to compare the main population of rice insect pests and ratooned in lowland rice field in the vegetative, flowering and milk ripening phase. The main bioinsecticide rice sprayed on rice canopy were comes from the entomopathogenic fungal conidia Metarhizium anisopliae, the entomopathogenic bacterium Bacillus thuringiensis, and as a control area without the application of bioinsecticide or synthetic insecticide. The results showed that population of fake white pests (Cnaphalocrosis medinalis) and white leafhoppers pest (Covana spectra) were more prevalent in vegetative phase rice compared to other types of pests such as green leafhoppers (Nephotettix spp.), Brown leafhoppers (Nilaparvata lugens), zig zag leafhoppers. (Recillia dorsalis), white-back leafhoppers (Sogatella furcifera), grasshoppers, mole cricket (Gryllotalpa gryllotalpa), and yellow rice stem borer (Scirpophaga incertulas). The Leptocorisa acuta and green ladybugs (Nezara viridula) began to attack the flowering and milk ripening phase, which was when the rice was aged about 54-68 days after transplanting (dat). Whereas in ratooned rice, the pest population of L. acuta has appeared on the first observation on rice aged 9 days after harvest (dah) until the ratooned rice was aged 58 days after harvesting. The population of pests was higher in land without bioinsecticide application compared to land applied of bioinsecticides. In ratooned rice, the pest population between the land applied with bioinsecticide M. anisopliae and B. thuringiensis was not significantly different from the land applied by B. thuringiensis which was sold in the market.

Abstract

Laboratory experiments were conducted to evaluate fitness traits of trichogrammatid species/strains reared on eggs of the diamondback moth, Plutella xylostella (L.). The experiments used eleven trichogrammatid species/strains collected from different host species and locations. They were Trichogrammatoidea cojuangcoi Nagaraja collected from parasitized P. xylostella eggs in Jarai, Muarasiban, Kerinjing, and Bogar, Trichogrammatoidea sp. A and B collected from parasitized Helicoverpa armigera (Hubner) eggs in Bogor, Trichogrammatoidea armigera Nagaraja collected from parasitized H. armigera eggs in Bogor, Trichogramma chilonis Ishii, Trichogramma japanicum Ashmead, Trichogramma australicum Girault, and Trichogrammatoidea nana (Zehntner) collected from parasitized Chilo sp. eggs in Cinta Manis, South Sumatera. When a female of Trichogramma was constantly exposed to 100 P. xylostella eggs per day throughout her lifetime, T. cojuangcoi from Jarai produced more parasitized host eggs (50.67%) and progenies (50.67 adults/female) compared to other species/strains. Sex ratio was predominantly female, the most female progenies were produced ( 38 adults/ female) by T. cojuangcoi from Jarai. There were no significant differences in larval (0-3.27%) and pupal (0-3.75%) mortality of all species/strains. Survival emerging adults of T. japanicum (90.24%) were significantly lower than those of other species/strains. These data showed that T. cojuangcoi from Jarai could be developed as biocontrol agents of P. xylostella.

Abstract

Entomopathogenic fungi are fungi pathogenic to insects and are widely used as biocontrol agents for insect pests. The aim of this research was to study the virulence of Beauveria bassiana and Metarhizium sp. isolates and to evaluate the efficacy of liquid production of those fungi against Leptocorisa oratorius (rice bug). Twelve isolates of B. bassiana and five isolates of Metarhizium sp. were used in this research. Selection result of B. bassiana isolates on third-instar rice bug nymphs showed that the isolate KBC caused the highest mortality rate (93%), while the lowest (46%) was caused by the isolate BBY 725. The shortest time needed to produce 50% mortality (Lethal time, LT50) was 3.52 days (isolate KBC). The longest time (10.36 days) was produced by isolate SLSS. The mortality of rice bug nymphs caused by Metarhizium isolates was only 50-62%. The shortest LT50 of Metarhizium (5.75 days) was produced by isolate Mtm, while the longest (7.46 days) was produced by isolate Mpx. Bioefficacy tests on six kinds of liquid formations of entomopathogenic fungi indicated that all were effective, mostly with LT50 d” two days. The mortality rates of rice bug nymphs caused by bioefficacy of fungus liquid production was generally above 85% up to 100%. The liquid media for entomopathogenic fungi performed better compared with solid media (SDA), as indicated by the greater mortality rate and shorter LT50.

Abstract

Aphid, Aphis gossypii is a vector of curly virus disease. The damage of chili due to its feeding  is only 35% and it can achieved 100% if the damage caused by the aphid as a vector.  The objectives of this research were to explore, to isolate, to identify, and to select entomopathogenic fungi as biocontrol agents for A. gossypii. The fungi were explored using insect bait in soil and collected infected insects from South Sumatra, Indonesia.  Then, the fungi were isolated and identified, and finally the bioefficacy tests were done using 1 x 106 conidia mL-1 against the third instar of A. gossypii. The explorations found 25 isolates of enthomopathogenic fungi consisting 10 isolates of Beauveria bassiana and 15 isolates of Metarhizium anisopliae. Selection of the fungi isolates on the aphid nymphs showed that isolate BPM isolated from Pseudoplusia chalcites caused the highest mortality rate (80.80%), while the lowest (47.20%) was caused by the isolate BAgTb isolated from A. gossypii.  The shortest time needed to produce 50% mortality (Lethal Time 50) was 2.54 days (isolate of Chrysodeixis chalcites from Muarasiban). The longest time (3.66 days) was produced by isolate of Tenebrio molitor from Tanjung Raja.

Abstract

Abundance and species richness of the predatory arthropods on paddy treated with Bacillus thuringiensis bioinsecticide. Application of bioinsecticide from bacterial entomopathogen has not been reported yet that can decrease abundance and species richness of predatory arthropods, such as spiders and predatory insects. This research was aimed to analyze the abundance and species richness of predatory arthropods paddy fields applied by B. thuringiensis bioinsecticide on paddy in fresh swamp area. Areas observed were 2 ha paddy field’s at Situ Bagendit variety. Predatory arthropods inhabiting canopy were sampled using sweep but soil dwelling arthropods were trapped using pitfall traps. The result showed that abundance of spiders inhabiting canopy decreased significantly after B. thuringiensis bioinsecticide application on paddy compared to control without bioinsecticide but the abundance of predatory insects were not significantly affected by the bioinsecticide. Application of the bioinsecticide did not significantly affect the abundance and species richness of soil dwelling predatory arthropods, such as spiders and predatory insects.

Abstract

Populations and damage by the papaya mealybug Paracoccus marginatus (Hemiptera: Pseudococcidae) on papaya inlowland areas of South Sumatera. One of the main problems in papaya cultivation today is the presence of a newlyintroduced pest, the white papaya mealybug, Paracoccus marginatus (Hemiptera: Pseudococcidae). This study aimed toobserve the mealybug populations and its damage percentage in papaya plants and to identify its host plants in SouthSumatera. The study was carried out on the fruit and vegetable producing area in Indralaya, South Sumatera. The survey wasconducted on papaya plantation plots with a minimum size of 1000 m2. Data from the observation indicated that populationsof P. marginatus on papaya fruit were not significantly different to those on papaya leaves, except for the first observation inthe rainy season. In general, the percentages of mealybug damages were not affected by the season and the percentages ofdamage on the leaves were not different from those on the fruits of the papaya plants. Inventory of P. marginatus host plantson the area resulted in a total of 12 species of host plants dominated by dicotyledonous plant species. The host plants werefrom 11 families, i.e. Anacardiaceae, Caricaceae, Cucurbitaceae, Euphorbiaceae, Fabaceae, Myrtaceae, Rosaceae, Rutaceae,Sapindaceae, Sapotaceae, and Solanaceae.

Abstract

Pathogeicity of Beauveria bassiana and Metarhizium anisopliae Isolates from Fresh Swamp and Tidal Lowland, South Sumatra for Scirpophaga incertulas Biological Agents. The objectives of the research weret o explore and to determine the pathogenicity of entomopathogenic fungi againts the larvae of Scirpophaga incertulas, and to measure conidial viability and density of the fungi. The method for fungi exploration used larvae of Tenebrio molitor baiting submerged in the soil. The soil was taken from fresh swampand tidal lowland rice in South Sumatra. From the exploration study, we found two species of entomopathogenic fungi: Beauveria bassiana and Metarhizium anisopliae. Mortality of S. incertulas larvae that had been treated topically with fungal conidia (1x106 conidia ml-1) varied among the isolates. The highest mortality (98.33%) caused by BPlus isolate of B. Bassiana and the lowest by MtmIn isolate of M. anisopliae (57.50%) and BTmTr isolate of B. bassiana (57.50%). The fungal colonies grew fast from the second day up to the fourth day after incubation but the growth became slow after the fifth day. The highest conidial density was resulted by BPcMs of B. bassiana isolate (63.33x106 conidia ml-1) but this density was not significantly different from that of the BPlus of B. bassiana isolate (63.11x106 conidia ml-1). The lowest conidial density found in BTmTr of B. bassiana isolate (20.97x106 conidia ml-1) . The isolate B. bassiana was more effective than M. anisopliae againt the larvae of S.incertulas.

Abstract

Efficacy test of liquid bio-insecticide of entomopathogenic fungi in control against Plutella xylostella in the laboratory. The insect pest P. xylostella could reduce crop production of Brassicaceae. The aim of research was to test the efficacy liquid bio insecticide with active ingredient of Beauveria bassiana and Metarhizium anisopliae fungi to control P. xylostella. Bio-insecticide was applied by spraying on mustard leaves infested with 50 individuals of third instar larvae of P. xylostella and a density of 1x106 conidia ml-1. Larval mortality was observed every 2 hours and LT50 of larvae was calculated. The study showed that the highest percentage of mortality found in Mt ES and Mt ES (cf) isolates was 99.6%, the lowest mortality at Mt NES isolate was 96.80%. LT50 and LT95 values Bb ES were the lowest i.e. 2.04 days and 2.95 days. The highest LT50 and LT95 of Mt NES isolate were 2.24 days and 3.32 days. The liquid bio-insecticide of entomopathogenic fungus B. bassiana and M. anisopliae were effective to control the larvae of P. xylostella.

Abstract

Diversity, domination, and distribution of rice stem borer species and its damage in various land typologies in Jambi Province. The research was conducted to analyze the diversity, domination, species distribution of rice stem borers (RSB) and its damage on various land typologies in Jambi Province. The research was carried out using survey method, from December 2010 until June 2011. Samples of RSB were collected from tidal swamp in Tanjung Jabung Timur District, swampy area in Muaro Jambi District, rainfed lowland in Sarolangun District, irrigated lowland in Merangin District, and irrigated upland in Kerinci District and Sungai Penuh District. The results showed that there were five spesies of RSB found in Jambi Province. Scirpophaga incertulas Walker (yellow stem borer) was the most dominant of RSB, followed by Sesamia inferens Walker (pink stem borer), Chilo suppressalis Walker (striped stem borer), Chilo polychrysus Meyrick (dark-headed stem borer), and Scirpophaga innotata Walker (white stem borer). The distribution of S. incertulas, S. inferens, C. suppressalis and C. polychrysus were in all of rice field in Jambi Province, but that of S. innotata was limited over tidal swamp and rainfield lowland area. The RSB damage rate was lower than economic thereshold.

Abstract

Lipaphis erysimi (Hemiptera: Aphididae) is one of the main insect pests on brassicaceous crops. Aphids attack crops by sucking sap from its hosts. Densed population in the initial phase of crop growth could inhibit growing, loss in yield up to 100%. Experiments were aimed to explore and identify species of L. erysimi parasitoid in highland areas of South Sumatra, and to determine potency of the parasitoids to parasitize L. erysimi in laboratory. The highest parasitism level of L. erysimi (72.40%) was found on 200 aphids which reared on B. juncea. While, the second highest parasitism level (65.67%) was found on N. indicum. The number of mummies found on N. indicum was less than on B. juncea. Of all observations, every treatment on every tested plant showed that female D. rapae emerged more than male D. rapae (female bias). The two parasitoids species that parasitized L. erysimi were Diaeretiella rapae and Aphidius sp. Parasitisation at several location in South Sumatera was highly diverse. D. rapae was the most abundant parasitoid species on several high lands at South Sumatera.
