Abstract

This study underscores the importance of teaching moderation in Islamic Religious Education (IRE) lectures at public universities (PU) to foster a climate of tolerance among students, countering radicalism and extremism. The primary objective is to explore student perceptions of tolerance learning within their religious courses. Employing a quantitative approach, the researchers conducted a descriptive survey involving 795 respondents, utilizing a cross-sectional design for data collection via a Likert scale questionnaire. Results revealed that a significant majority of students, 87.82%, hold a very good perception of tolerance learning in IRE lectures. Further analysis indicated that over 90% of respondents viewed the attitudes and thoughts of IRE lecturers on religious moderation positively (97.74%). Similarly, 95.37% appreciated the teaching methods and processes that enhance tolerance learning, while 93.38% positively assessed the teaching materials that promote these values. These findings indicate that tolerance learning is effectively occurring in IRE courses at PU. This research reinforces the strategic role of Islamic Religious Education in internalizing tolerant values among students, ultimately contributing to the promotion of religious moderation within the educational context.

Abstract

Religious education plays a critical role in shaping both personal faith and interreligious harmony among students. This study investigates the levels of religiosity and religious tolerance among students attending Madrasah Tsanawiyah (MTs) and general junior secondary schools (SMP) in Indonesia. Employing a descriptive-quantitative research design, data were collected from 400 students—200 from MTs and 200 from SMP in West Java—using two validated questionnaires measuring religiosity and religious tolerance, each comprising 24 items. The findings reveal no significant difference in religiosity between MTs and SMP students, with the majority in both groups scoring high in religiosity (71% and 69%, respectively). However, a significant difference was observed in religious tolerance, with SMP students demonstrating higher tolerance levels (60.5%) compared to MTs students, who mostly showed lower tolerance (67.5%) (t = 7.649, p < .01). Additionally, while no significant correlation was found between religiosity and religious tolerance among MTs students (r = .055, p > .05), a moderate positive correlation was found among SMP students (r = .589, p < .01). These findings suggest that school type influences the development of religious attitudes, with general schools being more effective in fostering both religiosity and tolerance. The study underscores the need for further investigation into the pedagogical approaches used in SMP that successfully promote religious tolerance. It also calls for the development of religious education models in MTs that integrate tolerance-building strategies without compromising religious commitment.

Abstract

Sustainable human resource development has become a critical issue in Islamic educational institutions as they respond to changing educational demands while preserving Islamic values. This scrutinizes how progressive Islamic Educational Management (IEM) practices contribute to the sustainability of human resources in two Indonesian Islamic schools. Employing a qualitative-dominant mixed-method design, data were collected through in-depth interviews, structured observations, document analysis, and a brief descriptive survey involving 32 educators and administrative staff. The findings reveal that both institutions implement progressive management strategies that emphasize adaptation, innovation, and continuous professional development grounded in Islamic principles. The Islamic elementary school demonstrates a strong integration of spiritual development and managerial professionalism, while Islamic Junior high school highlights institutional adaptability and active community engagement. Furthermore, the study shows that visionary leadership, human-centered policies, and reflective evaluation mechanisms play a central role in sustaining the quality and commitment of educational personnel. These results contribute to a deeper understanding of IEM as a framework for sustainable leadership and organizational development within Islamic schools. This study implies that Islamic educational institutions can strengthen long-term human resource sustainability by harmonizing Islamic values, progressive management practices, and professional well-being.
