Abstract

Abstract

Cinnamon (Cinnamomim burmannii) found in the markets, comes in many forms with one of them being a type of jamu which the cinnamon dust is capsulized. The capsulized jamu is claimed to be beneficial on treating diabetes melitus. The effects of antidiabetics on some products of the capsulized jamu is suspected to work through the alpha-glucosidase enzyme inhibition activites contained in them. The aim of this research is to verify the activities of some capsulized cinnamon dust extract in jamu (C. burmannii) found in the markets on its effect to inhibit alpha-glucosidase activity and to know its IC50 value. Experiment is done by using analytic experiments using two different products (product A and product B) and by using acarbose 50mg as a positive control factor. Enzyme activity are then calculated using UV-Vis spectrophotometer on a 410 nm wavelength. The result of this research is alpha-glucosidase enzyme inhibition activity found in product A and B are 155,104 µg/mL and 6.795,893 µg/mL, wherease the acarbose as a positive control are 47,466 µg/mL. The conclusion of this research is alpha-glucosidase enzyme inhibition activity found on the products as IC50 shows that product A has a better alpha-glucosidase enzyme inhibition activity than product B. However, when compared to the acarbose as the positive control, product A has a lesser alpha glucosidase enzyme inhibition activity. Kata kunci : Cinnamomum burmannii, diabetes mellitus, alpha glucosidase inhibition.

Abstract

Abstract

Background: Patellofemoral pain syndrome (PFPS) is one of the common injuries to the knee that often occur, causing pain when doing physical activities such as squatting, running or going up and down stairs when the knee is bent. As the joint that supports the body the most, this certainly hinders a person's activities. PFPS is caused by various risk factors ranging from intrinsic factors such as muscle strength to extrinsic factors such as type of activity. This study aimed to determine the risk factors related to PFPS as a preventive effort by doing quadriceps muscle strengthening exercises.  Methods: This study used a literature review study design using secondary data from published literature. Literature searches were conducted online through PubMed, ScienceDirect, and Google Scholar, using the keywords “knee injury”, “patellofemoral pain”, “patellofemoral pain syndrome”, and “risk factors”, which selected based on inclusion and exclusion criteria. Results: From the five studies that discussed risk factors related to PFPS, it was found that all journals showed quadriceps muscle strength, type of daily activity, Q-angle, joint laxity, hip tightness, patellar imbalance, overuse, and patellofemoral joint overpressure were associated with PFPS. Conclusion: Based on the literature that has been reviewed and the discussion, the dominant risk factor associated with PFPS was a decrease in hip muscle strength, especially quadriceps. Besides, several other contributing factors include the type of daily activity, Q-angle, joint laxity, hip tightness, patellar imbalance, overuse, and patellofemoral joint overpressure.

Abstract

Background: Nutrition is a significant risk factor for the incidence of periodontal disease. Nutrients acting on the human genome, either directly or indirectly, can change the expression and structure of genes. One of the micronutrients associated with periodontitis is vitamin D. Vitamin D has an important role in bone and calcium metabolism and regulates serum calcium and phosphate concentrations at normal limits. Purpose: To discuss the nutritional vitamin D as an essential micronutrient in preventing and accelerating healing in periodontitis. Review: Searched two databases from article publication to April 2021, resulting in a total of 66 hits, from which seven relevant articles were selected. VDR signaling can build transcription of genes encoding proactive cytokines, bypassing the cyclo-oxygenase-2 (COX-2) and prostaglandin pathway, and can inhibit matrix metalloproteinase production. The protective mechanism of vitamin D against periodontitis occurs through two biological pathways, namely anti-microbial and anti-inflammatory pathways. The anti-microbial effect of vitamin D results from the binding of 1,25(OH)2D3 with VDR which then induces cAMP, b-def-2 and b-def-3 peptides by macrophages, monocytes, gingival epithelium and periodontal ligament epithelium. The anti-inflammatory effect occurs through decreased production of proinflammatory cytokines. Conclusion: All the signaling effects of VDR can reduce bacteria induced in the inflammatory cytokines so that personalized vitamin D supplementation with an adjusted dose as needed can be used in preventing periodontitis or accelerating the healing of periodontitis.
