Abstract

This study investigates modality used in the Trumps’ speech on coronavirus pandemic addressed in the types of modality, value of modality and the explanation on the modality context. This study was analyzed qualitatively. The data of this study is the clause that consists of modality on President Trump’s speech, and sources of data is taken from www.nytimes.com. The data collected by applying a documentary technique. The finding reveals that the speakers use modalization of probability in their speech. The use of modality realized by modal auxiliary that commonly used by the speaker in the speech is sub modalization–probability. The reason that the speakers use modality is typically the modalization used to convey/persuade the listener of the speaker talk about the future political event that have not happened yet and unpredictable things.

Abstract

The transition of learning system from offline to online due to Covid-19 caused the teachers at MIS Ar Rasyid feel surprised and felt they must be able to use online media for their teaching learning process. This activity aims to improve the competence and professionalism of teachers at Madrasah Ibtidaiyah Ar Rasyid jalan Besar Tadukan Raga, STM Hilir-Deli Serdang in using Open Broadcaster Software. There are 10 teachers involved in this activity. This program is carried out through lectures, workshops, question and answer methods, and demonstrations. The lecture method is used to describe the basic concepts of OBS, demonstrations are carried out for direct practice of using it followed by the discussions about problems in the OBS steps, workshops are held to train and assist teachers. They design learning videos based on one basic competency. The results achieved from this activity are that the teachers are very enthusiastic, respond so positively and are very motivated to make learning videos through OBS. Teachers are also increasingly competent and professional in teaching using OBS to support the success of their classroom interaction.

Abstract

Abstract Karo Regency is a potential tourism region to visit. It has so many natural beauty and also cultural uniqueness. Therefore, the government should prepare the potential human resources (SDM) to face this potency. One important thing government should prepare is the English materials students learn, in order the students can understand it well, so they can apply it in their daily life in facing the foreign tourists come. However, the materials they use are not appropriate to their needs. Therefore, it is needed to develop the English reading materials for students. Research and Developmental (R & D) is the suitable way to develop the materials. Based on the evaluation, the materials teachers use in educating the students are not appropriate to the students needs. It can be seen from the questionnaires distributed to the students that they need authentic materials. Also from interviewing the teachers and practitioners, it can be seen that students need the materials which are related to their region and daily life. The report text and narrative text materials such as “Persimmon” and “Pawang Ternalem” are the example of appropriate materials to the students because it is representative to their daily life. Based on the results of the study, conclusion and suggestions are directed to the teachers who are teaching in SMAN 1 especially and in Karo regency generally to create the materials based on region culture and potency which will be taught to the students in order the students can understand it well and can apply it in their daily life in facing the tourists come to their region. Abstract

This study was about the use of Edmodo in teaching writing procedue text, to invstigate the problems when using Edmodo in teaching of writing text, and to find out the use of Edmodo and the problems. The participants of this research was English Teacher and Students of XI-TKJ 1 class of SMKN 2 Binjai. The technique of data collection used was observation and interview. The research finding Edmodo media showed that there twelve steps how to use of Edmodo that were used; (1) Teacher Sign Up, (2) Students Sign Up, (3) Basic Posting, (4) Posting Alert, (5)Posting Polls, (6) Working with Assigments, (7) Creating a Quiz, (8) Assigning Quiz, (9) Taking the Quiz, (10) Grades, (11) Calender and Library, (12) and Feeds.  Moreover, here were two problems faced in using Edmodo in teaching writing procedure text; (1)The problems from teachers (2) The problems from studentsKeywords: Edmodo, Writing, Procedue Text.

Abstract

This study aims to develop a test for reading report text based on the Two-Tier Multiple Choices test for Junior High school students in SMP Negeri 3 Dooksanggul. The Two-Tier Multiple Choices Test was developed by using Research and Development (R&D) method proposed by Borg and Gall (2007), which has been modified by Sugyono (2016). It consists of six steps: gathering data and information, analyzing data, developing material, validating by experts, revising the product, and developing the final product. The test instrument developed was a twolevel multiple choice test consisting of multiple-choice questions and a choice of reasons totaling 30 questions. The validator assessment sheet consists of three aspects, namely material, construction, and language, with 12 assessment indicators and is analyzed using the Content Validity Index (CVI). The first draft was revised based on validation results and experts' comments to develop a better test instrument. The developed reading test validated the Content Validity Index (CVI) score was 1.00. It concluded that the instrument test was categorized as "Very Good."

Abstract

This study deals with the usage of Google Translate (GT) in writing explanationtext by XI Grade Students of SMA N 1 Air Putih. The objectives of this studywere to explain the use of GT in writing explanation text by XI grade students ofSMA N 1 Air Putih and to describe the teacher’s reason in using GT as a media inwriting explanation text. This research was conducted by using descripstivequalitative. The data were gathered by interviewing and distributingquestionnaires to the teacher and the students. The usage of GT in writingexplanation text mostly gave positive responses from both teacher and students.GT was simplest, time-saving, accessible and helpful. The interview andquestionnaire results showed the most students answered GT was quite interesting(50%) and very interesting (39%), then not really (11%). Then, the data showedthat the students agree that GT was simplest way and saved their time (50%), thensome of them answered that it was quite simplest and time-saving (42%), and notreally simplest and time-saving (8%). Most of students answered that GT wasextremely helpful (45%), some of them felt that it was adequate helpful (39%),then some of them thought it was not really helpful (8%). The teacher use GT as alearning-media. She thought it can help the students to found a new vocabularyand stimulated the students more productive. She wanted to gave the studentsopportunity in utilized and enjoyed the technology during learning.

Abstract

This study were aimed to find out the types of teachers’ written feedback in writing which given by the teachers for grade 10, to find out the reason why teacher used those types of written feedbacks on students’ writing and also to find out the students’ response to the teacher’s written feedbacks on students’ writing of grade 10 students in SMA YAPIM Taruna Sei Rotan. This research used descriptive qualitative method and the data were collected through documentation and interview. The data collected were analyzed qualitatively. The findings found that there were two types of feedbacks namely, direct written feedback and indirect written feedback. There were 59 direct feedbacks (52%) out of 114 total feedbacks. Meanwhile, indirect feedback with 55 un-coded direct feedbacks (48%) and in this case, teacher did not use coded indirect feedback because the teacher did not understand about the codes. The reason why teacher used those kinds of written feedback on students’ writing was because it could make the students have more vocabularies. In conclusion, teacher’s written feedbacks were important to made students aware of making mistake on their writing and the students knew about their mistake easily and their writing will be better because they learn from the mistakes. In this case, most of the students felt happy when their teacher gave a correction on their writing. The students said that direct feedback was more effective than indirect feedback because they felt confuse about what the correct word is. By using the direct feedback, the students can have more vocabularies on their next writing. The findings suggested that English teachers was expected to provide a clear description of feedback on writing, especially how students perceive and interpret the feedback given.Key words: Feedback, Teacher’s Written Feedback, Students’ Writing

Abstract

This research was aimed to develop domino cards as the students’ vocabulary media in leaning notice for grade 7 students of SMP Negeri 1 Sidikalang. This study was categorized as Research and Development (R & D) study which adapted from Borg and Gall (2003). The method through six phases: conducting need analysis, designing, developing, experts validating, revising, and implementing. The subjects of this research were 32 students of grade seventh of SMPN 1Sidikalang which was located in Jl. Diponegoro No. 1 Sidikalang. The data and data resources were the teacher’s lesson plan, teacher’s interview, and students’ questionnaires result. After getting the last data, the media should be planned to be designed as the students’ needs. The media were developed and had been validated by the experts. The percentages of the media from the experts were 90% that categorized as very good. It can be concluded that domino cards gave many benefits for the students, such as improve their vocabulary, made them enjoy studying English, get easier in learning notice after using needed media. Abstract

This study aimed at describing the use of translation and investigating the reasons of using translation in teaching reading analytical exposition text grade eleven at MAN Peanornor. This study was qualitatively conducted that taken 3 English teachers of MAN Peanornor. The data were collected by using an interview and observing the whole process of teaching reading analytical exposition text. The findings of this study showed that there were 51 times of using translation found during three processes that they were conveying and checking meaning of words or sentences, explaining grammar and classroom management. It was also found that the use of translation was used in the scientific approach activity that experimenting and associating activity were the dominant used rather than observing, questioning and communicating activity in teaching. The reasons of using translation in teaching reading analytical exposition text were facilitating communication, teacher-student relationship and the L2 learning. The findings of this study revealed that translation contributed to the study of foreign language teaching especially teaching reading skill. Keywords : translation, teaching and analytical exposition text.

Abstract

The study discusses about Students Learning Style in Studying Vocabulary at Eighth Grade Students of SMP Swasta Budisatrya Medan. The objective of the study is to investigate type of students learning style in studying vocabulary and to analyze how is the VARK learning style applied in studying vocabulary at eighth grade students of SMP Swasta Budisatrya Medan in academic year 2016/2017. There were 38 students in the class of VIII-1 as the subject of this research. This study was conducted by using qualitative research. In this study, the researcher collected the data by using questionnaire and observation task sheet. The questionnaire designed by Fleming (2001). The result showed that the type of students learning style was Visual (15.7%), Aural (18.4%), Read/ Write (55.2%), and Kinesthetic (10.5%). It means that there was 6 of 38 students was visual preference, 7 of 38 students was aural preference, 21of 38 students was read/ write and 4 of 38 students was kinesthetic. The result of the data showed that VARK model was very helpful in teaching learning process especially in studying vocabulary. Keywords: Learning Style, VARK, Vocabulary.
