Abstract

This study aimed to develop a Reflective Evaluation Model of Character Education in Arabic language learning within Indonesian higher education using a phenomenological approach. Employing a qualitative phenomenological design, the study explored lecturers’ and students’ lived experiences and reflective practices in integrating character education into Arabic instruction. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, classroom observations, and document analysis and were analysed using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis to identify core themes. The findings indicated that Arabic language learning was experienced as a meaningful space for character development and perceived as intrinsically linked to moral and spiritual values. Reflective practices emerged across three interrelated dimensions—reflection in action, reflection on action, and reflection for action—which mediated the internalization of character values through curriculum and pedagogy and their manifestation in students’ behaviour. In conclusion, the study proposed a theoretically grounded reflective evaluation model that explains how character education is embedded in Arabic language learning and offers conceptual implications for character-based pedagogy and assessment in higher education.

Abstract

Abstract

Background: Reading comprehension (qirā’ah) is a fundamental skill in learning Arabic as a foreign language. As the complexity of texts and the demands of critical literacy increase, there is a need for a conceptual model that can map the cognitive and epistemic processes involved in understanding Arabic texts. Purpose: This study explores the technical potential of the Reference Epistemological Model (REM) in enhancing students' qirā’ah comprehension. Method: This study employs a qualitative approach with an exploratory case study design. Data were collected through text-based comprehension tests using authentic materials, semi-structured interviews, structured observations, and classroom documentation. Thematic analysis results indicate that the REM is effective in identifying students’ conceptual representations, epistemic activities, and epistemic stances while reading Arabic texts. Results and Discussion: The main findings indicate that the majority of students are still at the stage of literal comprehension and have not yet fully activated inferential and reflective strategies in reading. The REM has potential as both a diagnostic and pedagogical framework for developing qirā’ah assessment, constructing authentic evaluation rubrics, and designing learning strategies based on deep meaning-making. Conclusions and Implications: Contains one to two important sentences. This section provides a conclusion about the results of the research and what these results mean for us today, as well as the implications of the suggested research results for future research on the topic.

Abstract

This study examines affective strategies expressed through Arabic-Indonesian code-mixing in Arabic microlearning content on TikTok. As an informal and participatory learning space, TikTok enables not only the delivery of instructional messages but also the creation of emotional, social, and cultural connections. This research aims to identify the types and roles of code mixing in videos from the @hayfaacademy account and analyze how these linguistic choices foster affective engagement between the creator and viewers. Using a qualitative approach with critical discourse analysis, the study explores macro structures of meaning, classifies forms of language mixing, and interprets viewers’ emotional involvement through the affective domain framework. The findings reveal that code mixing supports comprehension while strengthening interpersonal closeness, indicating its dual role as a linguistic and affective strategy within digital learning settings. Theoretically, this study contributes to discussions on affect in Arabic language learning, particularly within social media environments where emotions and meaning-making are intertwined. Practically, the results offer insights for educators and content creators on designing microlearning materials that are empathetic, culturally resonant, and accessible to diverse learners. Future studies may expand the scope by incorporating multimodal analysis and engaging participants from broader sociocultural backgrounds to deepen understanding of linguistic and affective dynamics in Arabic microlearning.

Abstract

Modulation techniques are used when there is a gap in the lexical meaning of a translation, so a shift in semantic meaning is needed, such as a change in perspective, to avoid untranslatability in translation. This study analyzes the use of modulation techniques in translating Qur’anic kin?yah verses. Kin?yah is a figurative expression to describe something with a different meaning from its original. Therefore, translating kin?yah verses requires an in-depth understanding of the implicature hidden in the utterance. This study uses a qualitative approach with a content analysis method. The researcher will examine the content of the study of Qur’anic kin?yah verses and their translations from the Ministry of Religious Affairs. The research uses primary data sources in the form of Qur’anic kin?yah verses with a law theme due to differences of opinion among scholars and researchers. Then, the research analyzes the application of the modulation techniques and their implicature meaning based on relevance. The research finds that the Qur’anic kin?yah verses have shifted meaning from denotative to connotative, which aims to hide the original meaning and avoid inappropriate words. After analyzing the implicature meaning, it is found that the law-themed Qur’anic kin?yah verses contain majazi (connotative) meanings that refer to the meaning of intercourse as seven utterances, marriage as two utterances, and menstrual blood as one utterance. The shift in meaning has implications for better understanding and avoiding ambiguity in the translated text. Also, it contributes to the improvement of the readability and quality of translated Qur’anic verses.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze intonation patterns in the pronunciation of imperative sentences in Arabic. Intonation is a pattern of pitch changes produced by the speaker when pronouncing a sentence or its parts, which greatly affects the meaning of the utterance. This research uses descriptive qualitative methods in the form of verbal data analysis. PRAAT application is used for spectral analysis and sound frequency measurement. The results showed that the common intonation patterns in Arabic imperative sentences are /2-3-1/ and /3-2-1/, in accordance with the theory proposed by Al-Aini. Of the six participants, four of them have intonation patterns that match the native speaker's speech patterns, while the other two participants show variations of intonation patterns that do not match. Factors such as mother tongue influence, inappropriate emphasis or nabr, and ignorance of intonation patterns contributed to the difference. The findings are expected to help in Arabic language teaching, particularly in the phonetic aspect of harf halq, as well as contributing to the fields of Arabic linguistics and Arabic language education.

Abstract

This study analyzes the Grade II Arabic textbook for Madrasah Ibtidaiyah (MI) using a praxeological framework, with a particular focus on maharah qirā’ah (reading skills). The research is motivated by limitations in task design and teaching techniques that have not fully supported students’ reading competence. Four tasks related to maharah qirā’ah were examined through a descriptive qualitative approach within the praxeological framework (task, technique, technology, theory). The findings reveal that task design remains heavily dependent on teacher direction, lacks explicit techniques, and has not fostered meaningful reading ability. The main obstacles identified are ontogenic (misalignment with students’ developmental stages) and didactic (ambiguity in implementation techniques), which restrict text comprehension. The study concludes that improvements in reading task design are necessary to ensure clarity, contextual relevance, and alignment with learners’ developmental levels. The novelty of this research lies in applying praxeology as an analytical tool, rarely employed in Arabic textbook studies at the MI level, thereby offering a new perspective for developing more effective teaching materials.

Abstract

Background: Reading is a complex language activity involving the recognition of linguistic symbols, cognitive processing, and interpretation of textual meaning, making qirā’ah an essential skill in Arabic language learning. In this context, internal didactic transposition is the process by which teachers transform instructional materials into more accessible and meaningful classroom learning experiences. Purpose: This study aims to describe and analyze the forms and strategies of material adaptation in qirā’ah instruction while examining the role of internal didactic transposition in classroom practices. Method: This research employed an interpretive qualitative approach with a phenomenological design. Data were collected from curriculum and teaching module documents as well as interviews with an Arabic language teacher selected through purposive sampling. The data were analyzed using praxeological document analysis and thematic analysis, supported by source and method triangulation. Result and Discussion: The results indicate no conceptual gap between the curriculum and the teaching modules in terms of learning outcomes and reading competencies. However, teaching methods are not explicitly defined, causing reading comprehension and grammatical analysis activities to rely heavily on teachers’ pedagogical initiatives, implemented through explanations, translation, and contextual examples in the classroom. These findings indicate that internal didactic transposition occurs through teachers’ pedagogical adaptations in classroom practice. Conclusions and Implications: The novelty of this study lies in demonstrating that internal didactic transposition not only occurs at the planning level but is also significantly mediated by teachers’ pedagogical practices in qirā’ah instruction. Internal didactic transposition plays a crucial role in bridging the gap between curriculum design and classroom implementation. These findings suggest that the effectiveness of learning depends not only on the quality of instructional materials but also on their clarity and structure in supporting classroom practices. Therefore, textbooks written entirely in Arabic should provide clearer instructions and more structured reading activities to support students with varying levels of proficiency.

Abstract

Background: Test instruments play an important role in measuring abilities, including in competitive events such as the Arabic Grammar Olympiad; therefore, standardized, valid test items that support learning outcomes are required to map participants' ability profiles accurately. The Indonesian government also emphasizes the concept of Deep Learning, which focuses not only on cognitive aspects but also on achieving graduate profile outcomes. Purpose: This study aims to analyze Olympiad test items in terms of validity, reliability, difficulty level, discrimination power, distractor effectiveness, cognitive level, and their alignment with the eight Deep Learning graduate profiles of the Merdeka Curriculum. Method: This study uses a mixed-method approach, consisting of a quantitative ex post facto design and a qualitative content analysis design. Results and Discussion: The findings indicate that the Olympiad test items demonstrate high reliability; However, only 43% of the items are valid, 87% are categorized as easy in terms of difficulty level, 57% have poor discrimination power, and only 40% of the distractors are effective, and the cognitive level of the items is still dominated by the Lower Order Thinking Skills (LOTS) category (67%). Furthermore, the test items do not fully represent the eight Deep Learning graduate profiles, as only three profiles are reflected: independence (100%), faith and devotion to God Almighty (33%), and critical reasoning (20%). Conclusions and Implications: This study concludes that the Arabic Grammar Olympiad test items still require improvement to function optimally as instruments for measuring participants’ abilities while supporting the achievement of Deep Learning graduate profiles.

Abstract

Google Translate is a highly advanced tool, but it still makes many mistakes when translating from Indonesian to Arabic. Subjectivity has been avoided, and the language used is clear, concise, and objective. No new aspects have been added to the content of the original text. This research focuses on errors related to word choice and unnecessary additions that can cause translation errors. This research focuses on errors related to word choice and unnecessary additions that can cause translation errors. Technical terms are explained when first used, and precise word choice is employed. The text is free from grammatical errors, spelling mistakes, and punctuation errors. Quotes are clearly marked, and filler words are avoided. This research focuses on errors related to word choice and unnecessary additions that can cause translation errors. The text adheres to conventional academic structure and formatting, with a logical flow of information and causal connections between statements. The language used is formal, avoiding contractions, colloquial words, informal expressions, and unnecessary jargon. Positions on subjects are made clear through hedging, and bias is avoided. This study utilizes a descriptive qualitative approach. The data is collected through techniques such as documentation and interviews. The data sources for this study are students who have completed their theses in the Arabic Language Education (PBA) study program. The research and discussion revealed two errors in the translation of Indonesian to Arabic in the theses of students who used advanced translation tools. These errors included incorrect word choices and the addition of unnecessary words. Therefore, it is important for users of Google Translate to be aware of potential errors that may occur when using the tool. Additionally, Arabic learners should have a strong grasp of the rules of the Arabic language. The primary objective is to ensure that the source language remains true to its intended meaning.
