Abstract

This study explores the performance of Ki Manteb Soedarsono’s Dewaruci and Bima characters in it. As a carangan play (contemporary), Dewaruci is the most popular play. The purpose of this study is to describe the elements of Dewaruci puppet performance and how the concept of kasampurnan in Javanese cultural psychology was initiated by Suryomentaram (1892-1962). This is qualitative research with a psychological approach using the method of reading, taking notes, and studying literature. The data in a form of performances and texts were collected from Dewaruci scripts and puppet videos on Kanal Seni Gelar YouTube channel. We combine Dewaruci script with the puppeteer Ki Manteb and other sources, in addition, to conduct a critical analysis to identify kasampurnan life concept that Bima does in this play from Suryomentaram’s perspective. The result of the study shows that the Dewaruci puppet show by Ki Manteb has the advantage of being flexible and able to adapt to the context and needs of the audience. The concept of kasampurnan in Dewaruci as a representation of Javanese culture can be explained from the perspective of Suryomentaram indigenous psychology. This finding contradicts previous psychological analyses in literature and art. Previous psychology research used the theory of Sigmund Freud, C. G. Jung, and Alfred Adler. However, we argue that the theory cannot always explain the cultural context because of cultural differences between theory and objects. Therefore, this research is relevant in the spirit of science decolonization to see humans in Javanese culture according to their context and culture.

Abstract

Humans easily exploit the nature because their ethics towards the environment is based on the anthropocentrism perspective. Marine pollution and environmental damage for the sake of individual or certain groups economic satisfaction indicate a lack of human awareness to protect the environment. These activities are the cause of the environmental damage in the Serdadu Pantai novel by Laode Insan. This study aims to find out and describe ecocriticism in the Serdadu Pantai novel by Laode Insan related to the environmental damage, the behavior of the characters causing the environmental damage, and social and economic backgrounds as a factor in the occurrence of the environmental damage in the novel of Serdadu Pantai by Laode Insan. This study applies a qualitative research employing an ecocriticism approach. The primary data source of this study is the Serdadu Pantai novel by Laode Insan published by PT Grasindo in 2019. The data in this study is a fragment of the text of the Serdadu Pantai novel by Laode Insan which allegedly contains ecological criticism. The secondary data sources are journals and books related to environmental ecology and literary ecocriticism. The results show that; (1) the environmental damage in the Serdadu Pantai novel was demonstrated through coral reefs damage and water pollution caused by the behavior of people who utilize natural resources in a way that is not in accordance with the concept of conservation, such as using trawlers, poisons, and bombs to catch fish, and also through the characters’ way of thinking toward the environment; (2) the social and economic background as a factor in the occurrence of the environmental damage was demonstrated through a social background that lacks education about nature conservation which later gives impact on long-term environmental damage. Economic problems of livelihoods that depend on marine resources as the main source of income have also created excessive exploitative behavior of the community which causes damage to the marine ecosystems.

Abstract

The values contained in folklore can shape a person's character. In folklore, speakers not only provide entertainment and indirectly the elements contained in the story in giving thoughts to someone, so that it will form a character. Fairy tales are a form of folklore that contains educational values including moral, heroic, religious, social, and cultural values. Therefore, fairy tales can be used as literature teaching materials in schools, especially at the high school level. Students at that time increasingly needed supporting components to shape their character, but the lack of literary teaching materials could affect the character development of students to be not optimal, so alternative teaching materials were needed. The fairy tales contained in the “Dongeng Rakyat Kabupaten Rembang Jilid I” book can be an alternative for teaching literature in schools, this is because Rembang Regency is a coastal area that has been largely influenced by foreign cultures, but until now they have been able to maintain their original culture. This study uses a pragmatic approach in the analysis of the narrative structure using the structuralism theory of Vladimir Yakovlevich Propp which consists of 31 units of narrative structure which are then divided into 7 action circles to facilitate the process of analyzing the educational value contained in it. This study used the descriptive qualitative method. A collection of folk tales in Rembang Regency include the Origin of “Asal Usul Desa Sulang”, “Cerita Rakyat Yuyu Rumpung”, and “Riwayat Terjadinya Desa Kaliori” this study concludes that the Rembang Regency folktale book is suitable to be used as alternative teaching material in high school because it contains educational values, namely heroism, social, cultural, and religious values that are needed for the process of forming student character in modern times like today.
