Abstract

Social influence usually appears in people’s speech because language is closely related to the population in the place where the language is used. This research aims to explore the factors impacting language maintenance in the Sasak community at Karang Anyar hamlet. The method used was qualitative, it was conducted for two months, from January to February 2024. The subjects consisted of children to elderly people, aged 10 to 70 years old. The number of informants are 40 peoples. The data has been collected by some technique, including: observation, interview, audio recording and note taking. The instruments used are: observation sheet, interview questions, and audio recorder. The data collected by triangulation: observation, interview, and recording. The data were analysed through three stages namely: transcription, identification, and classification. The research result found that the maintenance of the Sasak language in Karang Anyar is still strong. There are more than two languages that are mastered by the majority of the residents. Sasak language is the most often used language in their daily life. Indonesian is only used in formal situation, namely: village office, post office, schools, and minimarkets. Sumbawa language used at certain moments, namely: a wedding event, circumcision event, and meeting at work place.

Abstract

ABSTRAK Lokakarya “Writing for Academic Publishing” bertujuan untuk meningkatkan kemampuan peserta dalam menulis untuk penerbitan akademik. Kegiatan ini diadakan dengan dukungan dari Regional English Language Office (RELO) dan Kedutaan Amerika, bekerja sama dengan Universitas Mataram (Unram), FKIP Unram, dan UPT Pusat Bahasa Unram. Tujuan utama dari lokakarya ini adalah memberikan wawasan dan keterampilan baru kepada peserta dalam strategi penulisan yang efektif, struktur tulisan akademik, serta teknik penyuntingan untuk meningkatkan kualitas tulisan mereka. Lokakarya ini juga bertujuan untuk memperluas pemahaman peserta tentang penulisan akademik melalui diskusi dan pertukaran ide dengan sesama penulis akademik. Hasil kegiatan ini menunjukkan antusiasme peserta yang tinggi selama lokakarya dan peningkatan kemampuan menulis akademiknya untuk publikasi ilmiah. Mereka memperoleh pemahaman yang lebih baik tentang strategi penulisan yang efektif, struktur tulisan akademik yang benar, serta teknik penyuntingan yang dapat meningkatkan kualitas tulisan mereka. Selain itu, lokakarya ini memberikan kesempatan bagi peserta untuk berinteraksi dengan narasumber penutur asli dari Amerika yang berpengalaman, dengan sesama penulis akademik, dan dengan rekan sejawat dalam bidang pengajaran Bahasa Inggris. Secara keseluruhan, lokakarya “Writing for Academic Publishing” telah berhasil memberikan kontribusi yang berarti dalam pengembangan kemampuan menulis peserta dalam konteks penerbitan akademik. Dukungan dari RELO Kedutaan Amerika, Unram, dan FKIP sangat berarti dalam melaksanakan kegiatan ini. Harapan kami adalah bahwa peserta dapat terus mengaplikasikan pengetahuan dan keterampilan yang mereka peroleh dalam pengembangan karier dan penelitian akademik mereka di masa depan. ABSTRACT This community service entitled “Writing for Academic Publishing” workshop series aims to enhance participants' writing skills specifically for academic publications. This event was supported by the Regional English Language Office (RELO) and the U.S. Embassy, in collaboration with the University of Mataram (Unram), FKIP Unram, and the Language Center of Unram. The primary objective of this workshop was to provide participants with valuable insights and new techniques to effectively approach academic writing, including structuring their papers and applying editing methods to improve the overall quality of their work. Furthermore, the workshop seeks to expand participants' understanding of academic writing through engaging discussions and the exchange of ideas with fellow academic writers. The outcomes of this event reflect the participants' high enthusiasm and noticeable improvement in their academic writing skills, specifically geared towards scholarly publications. They have acquired a better grasp of effective writing strategies, appropriate academic writing structures, and editing techniques that can significantly enhance their written pieces. Additionally, the workshop offers participants the opportunity to interact with experienced native English speaker and educator, fellow academic writers, and peers involved in English language teaching. In general, the “Writing for Academic Publishing” workshop series have made a substantial contribution to the development of participants' writing abilities within the realm of academic publication. The unwavering support from RELO, the U.S. Embassy, Unram, and FKIP has been instrumental in successfully organizing this workshop. It is our sincere hope that participants will continue to apply the knowledge and skills they have gained to advance their careers and engage in further academic research endeavors in the future.

Abstract

Program Kampus Mengajar termasuk program asistensi mengajar di satuan pendidikan yang berperan sebagai mitra yang membantu guru dalam kegiatan belajar mengajar di sekolah penugasan. Berkaitan dengan hal tersebut, keterampilan dasar mengajar perlu dikuasai mahasiswa peserta Kampus Mengajar untuk dapat memberikan dampak pada siswa terutama peningkatan kemampuan numerasi. Kegiatan ini bertujuan mengidentifikasi dan memetakan evaluasi program kerja dari metode pembelajaran yang dilakukan selama penugasan. Upaya yang digunakan dalam kegiatan asistensi ini menggunakan metode asistensi tindakan kelas yang dilakukan tim kampus mengajar dengan guru dengan cara melakukan tes berupa pre-test dan post-test pada siswa. Tim kampus mengajar bekerja sama bersama guru untuk menaikkan kemampuan numerasi siswa dengan menggunakan metode pembelajaran interaktif yang telah dirancang yaitu; Implementasi Game Numerasi (Kahoot), Permainan Teka-Teki Silang Numerasi, Implementasi Ular Tangga Numerasi dan Penguatan Matematika (Kuis Ketuk Magic). Hasil yang didapat setelah program berlangsung terdapat kenaikan hasil belajar berdasarkan pre-test dan post-test Asesmen Kompetensi Minimum yang semula 15% menjadi 19%. Hal ini menyatakan bentuk keberhasilan hasil metode pembelajaran yang cukup efektif yang telah berlangsung selama 3 bulan pembelajaran.

Abstract

Kegiatan Pengabdian kepada Masyarakat ini bertujuan untuk meningkatkan pemahaman, minat, dan kemampuan para guru dalam melakukan Penelitian Tindakan Kelas (PTK). Pelaksanaan PKM ini dilaksanakan secara hybrid (daring dan luring) dan melibatkan 12 orang guru SMP di wilayah kabupaten Lombok Barat. Dalam prosesnya, kegiatan PKM ini terdiri dari penyampaian materi, penugasan dalam pembuatan proposal PKM, presentasi dan diskusi proposal dan pelaksanaan PTK. Berdasarkan kegiatan yang diselenggarakan, didapatkan bahwa para peserta sangat antusias dan berperan aktif dalam melaksanakan tahapan kegiatan PKM, baik itu secara daring maupun secara luring. Mereka mampu membuat proposal PTK dengan baik dan melaksanakan PTK secara kolaboratif. Dari hasil angket yang ada, secara umum para guru menyatakan bahwa mereka menyambut baik kegiatan ini dan berharap adanya kegiatan serupa yang dapat meningkatkan kompetensi mereka sebagai guru Bahasa Inggris.

Abstract

This study aims at identifying and analyzing linguistic and textual errors in writing narrative texts committed by male and female students of the fourth-semester English department students. The focus is on finding the significant differences between male and female students in terms of the frequencies of linguistic and textual errors in their narrative texts and the factors contributing to the errors. Data were collected through writing tests. Data were analyzed and interpreted by quantitative descriptive analysis and multivariate analysis using Two Ways ANOVA (F-Test) to investigate the significant differences linguistic and textual errors. Then the types of linguistic and textual errors in the two groups of male and female students were compared using descriptive analysis and statistical analysis. The results show that 57.93% of linguistic errors occurred in female’s narrative writing, with 42.07% occurred in male’s. Meanwhile, 46.29% of textual errors occurred in female’s narrative writing, with 53.71% found in the male’s. Statistically, there was no significantly different interaction between male and female students in terms of textual error frequency in writing narrative text, with p = 0.975 (p > 0.05) at the level of significance a = 5 %. And there was a significantly different interaction between male and female students in terms of linguistic error frequency in writing narrative texts, with p = 0.029 (p < 0.05) at the level of significance a = 5%. Several factors that affect female and male students’ errors in their narrative text are intralingual interference, language transfer, lack of knowledge about the narrative text, and gender difference.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the translation strategies employed by Luna Casano in translating the song “Angels Like You” into Indonesian and to compare the resulting translation with those generated by ChatGPT using three different prompts. Utilizing Peter Newmark’s (1988) framework of translation strategies, the research adopts a descriptive qualitative approach. The findings reveal that Luna Casano predominantly uses Literal Translation and Free Translation (each accounting for 30% of the total), followed by Communicative Translation (25%), Faithful Translation (10%), and Idiomatic Translation (5%). Notably, Word-for-word, Semantic, and Adaptation strategies are absent from her translation. In contrast, the quality of ChatGPT’s translations is significantly influenced by the specificity of the prompts provided. Among the three prompts tested, Prompt 3—which instructs the AI to produce a poetic and singable version—yields the most comparable output to Luna Casano’s translation. This study concludes that while AI-based tools such as ChatGPT can generate accurate and stylistically appropriate translations when guided effectively, human involvement remains crucial in preserving the emotional depth, musicality, and aesthetic value inherent in song lyrics. It is recommended that future studies explore the application of similar translation strategies in other forms of artistic texts, such as poetry or drama, to further examine the evolving role of AI in literary and creative translation.

Abstract

This research investigates the effectiveness of the Show and Tell (SAT) strategy in teaching vocabulary to the seventh-grade students of SMPN 3 Pujut. Vocabulary is one of the essential components in English learning, and many students still face difficulties in mastering it. Therefore, an appropriate strategy is needed to improve their vocabulary achievement. The purpose of this study was to determine whether there was a significant difference in students’ vocabulary mastery between those taught using the Show and Tell strategy and those taught through conventional methods, as well as to find out whether the Show and Tell strategy was effective for teaching vocabulary. This study employed a quasi-experimental research design with a quantitative approach, using pre-test and post-test instruments. The sample consisted of 56 students divided into two groups: 28 students in the experimental class and 28 students in the control class. Data were collected through vocabulary tests and analyzed using SPSS version 25, including tests of normality, homogeneity, and an independent samples t-test. The results revealed that the experimental groups mean score increased from 61.07 in the pre-test to 89.10 in the post-test, while the control group’s mean rose from 63.92 to 84.28. The t-test value (t0 = 2.024; p = 0.048 < 0.05) indicated a significant difference between the two groups. These findings confirmed that the Show and Tell strategy was more effective in improving students’ vocabulary mastery compared to the conventional strategy. In conclusion, the Show and Tell strategy significantly enhanced students’ vocabulary mastery and made the learning process more interactive, contextual, and engaging. Therefore, it is recommended that English teachers implement this strategy in their classrooms to promote active participation, motivation, and better vocabulary retention among students.

Abstract

ABSTRAK Kegiatan Pengabdian kepada Masyarakat ini bertujuan untuk meningkatkan pengetahuan guru tentang konsep Linguistic Landscape (LL) dan menyusun langkah-langkah kegiatan belajar berbasis LL. Salah satu contoh materi LL yang dapat digunakan sebagai tema dalam aktivitas writing dan speaking di kelas EFL adalah foto-foto papan peringatan bertema “Bahaya Narkoba”, “Larangan Membuang Sampah”, “Larangan Merokok”, dan lain sebagainya. Tema-tema papan peringatan tersebut dapat disusun menjadi materi ajar yang tidak hanya menarik tetapi juga relevan dan kontekstual dengan kondisi lingkungan peserta didik. Materi ajar berbasis LL yang baik merangsang kemampuan berpikir kritis, kreatif, kolaboratif, dan komunikatif yang sangat dibutuhkan siswa dalam pembelajaran abad 21 ini. Sebanyak 25 orang guru mata pelajaran di Pondok Pesantren Raudlatusshibyan NW Belencong Gunungsari dan 4 orang mahasiswa terlibat dalam kegiatan ini. Metode kegiatan ini menggunakan sosialisasi dan diskusi kelompok dengan pendekatan ‘get-in and take-out’ melalui 3 tahap kegiatan: Tahap pertama, sosialisasi tentang konsep, signifikansi, hasil penelitian, dan contoh-contoh kegiatan yang mengintegrasikan LL dalam pembelajaran EFL. Tahap kedua, melaksanakan diskusi kelompok untuk menentukan langkah-langkah kegiatan belajar berbasis LL. Tahap terakhir, melaksanakan evaluasi kegiatan baik pra-kegiatan, selama kegiatan, dan pasca-kegiatan dengan mengambil data hasil pengisian kuesioner yang telah diisi peserta. Hasil evaluasi menunjukkan bahwa pengetahuan guru tentang konsep LL dan cara menyusun langkah-langkah kegiatan belajar berbasis LL meningkat. Para peserta sangat mengapresiasi kegiatan ini dan berharap kegiatan pengembangan profesional semacam ini lebih sering diadakan di madrasah-madrasah. Adapun saran dari para peserta untuk ke depannya adalah perlunya ada tindaklanjut dari kegitana ini, perlunya menambahkan game atau permainan di sela-sela kegiatan agar semakin menyenangkan, perlunya tema lain yang lebih beragam seperti penerapan LL dalam literasi digital yang lebih kompleks. ABSTRACT This Community Service program aims to increase teachers’ knowledge about the concept of Linguistic Landscape (LL) as well as develop competency in designing a scenario for LL-based learning activities. One example of LL material that can be used as a theme in writing and speaking activities in the EFL class is pictures of warning boards themed “the Danger of Drugs”, “Prohibition of Littering”, “the Danger of Smoking Cigarettes”, and so on. The warning board themes can be arranged into teaching materials that are not only interesting but also relevant and contextual to the students’ environmental conditions. Fine LL-based teaching materials stimulate students’ critical thinking, creative thinking, collaborative, and communicative skills that the students need to master in the 21st century learning. As many as 25 subject teachers at Raudlatusshibyan NW Islamic Junior High School in Belencong Gunungsari and 4 students of the English Education Program were involved in this program. A 3-phase method of socialization and group discussions with a 'get-in and take-out' approach was used. The first phase was presenting concepts, significance, results of study, and examples of activities that integrate LL in EFL learning situation. The second stage was group discussion to determine the draft scenario for LL-based learning activities. The last stage was evaluation of the pre-activities, while-activities, and post-activities based on the data obtained from in-process evaluation and the questionnaire. The results of the evaluation shows that the participants’ knowledge about the concept of Linguistic Landscape and how to design a draft scenario for LL-based learning activities increases. The participants gave much appreciation to the team for organizing this program and hoped that such professional developments would be held more often in the madrasah. Some suggestions from participants to the team for future programs are: must plan for a follow-up program in relation to today’s topic, needs to add games between session break to make it more fun, should plan to set other professional development themes such as the application of LL in more complex digital literacy.

Abstract

ABSTRAK Kegiatan Pengabdian Kepada Masyarakat (Abdimas) ini merupakan seri lanjutan dari kegiatan Abdimas sebelumnya pada 2021 dan 2022 yang lalu (Putera et al., 2021; Putera et al., 2022). Sedikit berbeda namun berkaitan dengan tema tahun sebelumnya, kegiatan Abdimas tahun ini mengangkat tema penyusnan bahan ajar Bahasa Inggris otentik berbasis Linguistic Landscape yang mengintegarsikan media digital/online dalam rancangan tugas siswa. Sebagai sebuah pendekatan baru dalam studi kemultibahasaan dan pembelajaran bahasa Inggris, LL mendorong untuk lebih banyak menggunakan materi-materi, dan tema-tema pembelajaran otentik yang ada di sekeliling siswa baik yang berasal dari sumber non-digital maupun digital. Penggunaan materi dan tema-tema otentik akan menghasilkan pembelajaran yang kontekstual, relevan dengan situasi dan kondisi siswa, dan lebih bermakna sebab siswa memahami isu-isu otentik yang ada di sekitarnya (seperti masalah sampah, bahaya merokok, dll) lebih dibandingkan dengan isu-isu non-otentik yang tidak pernah/belum pernah mereka lihat dan alami selama hidupnya. Berlimpahnya bahan-bahan digital (digital landscape) bisa dimanfaatkan menjadi bahan ajar pembelajaran bahasa Inggris yang efektif, murah, dan mudah didapat. Pelatihan ini diharapkan akan dapat mengatasi beberapa permasalahan yang dihadapi guru-guru madrasah seperti kurangnya kreatifitas dalam menyusun bahan ajar otentik berbasis LL yang terintegrasi dengan media digital, dan kurangnya kreatifitas guru dalam menyusun bahan ajar berbasis LL mengintegrasikan literasi digital, dan kurangnya literasi digital siswa yang ada di madrasah di Lombok Barat disebabkan oleh minimnya bentuk penugasan/projek yang memanfaatkan media digital untuk meningkatkan kemampuan berbahasa siswa dan efektifitas pembelajaran bahasa Inggris. Berkesesuaian dengan persoalan di atas, kegiatan pelatihan penyusunan bahan ajar berbasis LL mengintegrasikan literasi digital/online dalam rancangan tugas/projek siswa menjadi amat penting mengingat pembelajaran abad 21 dan kurikulum Merdeka Belajar saat ini mewajibkan para guru dan siswa untuk cakap (literate) dalam menggunakan teknologi digital, sadar/melek (aware), dan update dengan permasalahan yang terjadi di lingkungannya sehingga mereka tidak hanya cakap dalam menggunakan bahasa (asing) namun juga dapat memberikan solusi bagi perbaikan masyarakat dan lingkungannya. Kegiatan Abdimas ini dilaksanakan di MTs Raudlatusshibyan NW Belencong Kec. Gunung Sari Kab. Lombok Barat dengan khalayak sasaran guru-guru Bahasa Inggris madrasah. Hasil kegiatan pengabdian ini menunjukkan tingkat keberhasilan yang tinggi yang terlihat dari hasil kuesioner yang berisi pertanyaan tentang pemahaman terhadap materi, cara penyampaian materi, dan kesulitan yang dihadapi dalam mengintegrasikan LL dengan media literasi digital yang sesuai. ABSTRACT This Community Service Program is a continuation of the previous program held in 2021 and 2022 (Putera et al., 2021; Putera et al., 2022). Slightly different but related to the previous ones, this year's theme focused on creating the draft of authentic English teaching materials based on Linguistic Landscape that integrates digital/online media both in the learning activities and assignments. As a new approach in multilingualism and English language learning, Linguistic Landscape encourages the use of authentic materials and learning themes that are present in students' surroundings, whether from non-digital or digital sources. The use of authentic materials and themes results in contextual, relevant learning experiences for students, as they understand authentic issues in their environment (such as waste problems, smoking hazards, etc.) more than non-authentic issues they may have never seen or experienced in their lives. The abundance of digital resources (digital landscape) can be leveraged to create effective, affordable, and easily accessible English language teaching materials. It is expected that this program addressed several challenges faced by madrasah teachers, such as a lack of creativity in developing authentic LL-based teaching materials integrated with digital media, a lack of creativity in developing LL-based teaching materials that integrate digital literacy, and a lack of digital literacy among madrasah students in West Lombok due to the scarcity of assignments/projects that utilize digital media to enhance students' language skills and the effectiveness of English language learning. In line with the aforementioned issues, the training activity for developing LL-based teaching materials integrating digital/online literacy into student assignments/projects becomes crucial, considering that 21st-century learning and the current independent learning or Merdeka Belajar curriculum require teachers and students to be proficient in using digital technology, aware of current issues in their environment, and updated so that they are not only proficient in using a foreign language but also capable of providing solutions for the improvement of society and their environment. This program was conducted at MTs Raudlatusshibyan NW Belencong, Gunung Sari Subdistrict, West Lombok Regency, with the target audience being madrasah teachers that teach English subject at schools. The results of this program show a high level of success, as seen from the questionnaire results regarding understanding of the material, delivery of the material, and challenges in integrating Linguistic Landscape with suitable digital literacy media.

Abstract

Kemampuan komunikasi, khususnya penguasaan bahasa Inggris, sangat penting dalam menghadapi globalisasi dan mendukung pelayanan lintas budaya. Di era teknologi dan informasi yang begitu pesat saat ini, para guru menghadapi tantangan rendahnya keterampilan bahasa Inggris siswa di pedesaan. Oleh karena itu, program Pengabdian kepada Masyarakat (PKM) ini dirancang untuk menggali informasi terkait efektifitas dan manfaat, serta tantangan penerapan pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris melalui metode blended learning di MTs NW Tangar Lingsar. Metode ini menggabungkan pembelajaran daring dan tatap muka, yang memberikan fleksibilitas dan akses ke berbagai sumber belajar. Program ini terdiri dari 16 sesi dengan evaluasi di tengah dan akhir pembelajaran untuk mengukur peningkatan kemampuan dan kepercayaan diri siswa. Hasilnya menunjukkan peningkatan rata-rata kompetensi peserta sebesar 12.40 poin, dengan peningkatan partisipasi dalam pembelajaran daring dan tatap muka. Tantangan yang dihadapi termasuk kendala waktu dan akses teknologi. Namun, koordinasi yang baik antara tim PKM dan pihak sekolah memungkinkan program berjalan lancar. Program ini berhasil meningkatkan motivasi dan kemampuan bahasa Inggris peserta, dan metode blended learning terbukti efektif dalam mendukung pembelajaran era revolusi industri 4.0. Rekomendasi mencakup keberlanjutan program dengan fokus keterampilan membaca dan menulis, serta pelatihan ToT bagi pengajar Bahasa Inggris di MTs NW Tangar Lingsar. Meskipun terdapat tantangan dalam akses teknologi dan kesiapan guru, blended learning menawarkan fleksibilitas dan personalisasi yang meningkatkan keterlibatan siswa dan pengembangan keterampilan teknologi, yang penting di era digital ini.
