Abstract

The objective of this research was to determine whether the use of the PARS (Preview, Ask Question, Read, Summarize) strategy could improve reading comprehension among eleventh-grade students at SMA Negeri 4 Palu. A quasi-experimental design was used with a sample selected through available sampling. Class XI H served as the experimental group and Class XI F as the control group. Class XI H was chosen for treatment due to its lower English proficiency based on pre-test results. The research instrument was a reading test consisting of multiple-choice, essay, and true/false questions, administered as both pre-test and post-test. The mean pre-test scores were 46.04 for the experimental class and 47.46 for the control class. After treatment, the experimental group’s mean post-test score rose to 75.72, while the control group’s was 65.69. Statistical analysis showed that the t-counted value (1.99) exceeded the t-table value (1.67), indicating a significant improvement. The findings suggest that the PARS strategy effectively enhances students’ reading comprehension. Therefore, teachers are encouraged to implement this strategy to promote student engagement and understanding, particularly in content-heavy subjects, by guiding learners through an active and structured reading process.

Abstract

Cohesion and coherence are essential components in academic writing which bridge an academia to create logically organized text and easy to comprehend. Thus, this research aims to identify the use of cohesion and coherence devices in the background section of Skripsi written by students of the English Education Study Program of Tadulako University. This research employs a mixed-method, which involves quantitative and qualitative analysis. The data were taken from ten selected Skripsi backgrounds. The findings of this research present that the most frequently used of cohesive devices is reiteration (48.09%), followed by reference (32.20%), and conjunction 1(9.49%). In contrast, the least frequently used cohesive devices are substitution and ellipsis, each appearing only (0.11%). Furthermore, in terms of coherence, the students dominantly implement repeat key nouns (66.27%), followed by consistent pronouns (22.88%), transition signals (8.88%), and logical order (1.97%). Although some devices appeared less frequently, the students’ academic writing still achieved overall textual unity and logical flow. Therefore, these findings indicate that while students have good abilities to build cohesion and coherence in their writing, there remains need to encourage more varied use of devices, particularly substitution, ellipsis, and transition signal, in order to further improve their quality of academic writing.

Abstract

Lead (Pb) pollution, primarily from fuel combustion, poses severe health risks, including hypertension and systemic poisoning. Gas station attendants are particularly vulnerable to Pb exposure due to occupational hazards. This study investigates the efficacy of red seaweed (Eucheuma spinosum) juice, rich in antioxidants and bioactive components, in reducing Pb levels in urine and lowering blood pressure among gas station workers in Kendari City, Indonesia. A quasi-experimental pre-post-test control group design was employed. Thirty gas station attendants were divided into three groups: control (P0), treatment with seaweed juice once daily (P1), and treatment with seaweed juice twice daily (P2), each receiving 200 mL for two weeks. Urinary Pb levels and blood pressure were measured pre-and post-intervention. Phytochemical analysis of the seaweed juice confirmed the presence of antioxidants, phenolics, saponins, flavonoids, and triterpenoids. Data were analyzed using One-Way ANOVA and Kruskal-Wallis tests. The P1 and P2 groups exhibited a reduction in urinary Pb levels, whereas the P0 group showed an increase. However, statistical analysis indicated no significant differences in mean urinary Pb levels among groups. Blood pressure decreased in all groups, with the P2 group showing the most significant reduction in systolic pressure. Despite these trends, no statistically significant differences in blood pressure across the groups were observed. Red seaweed juice demonstrated potential in reducing Pb levels and improving blood pressure among gas station attendants. While statistical significance was not achieved, the findings suggest further research with larger sample sizes and longer intervention durations to confirm the therapeutic benefits of seaweed-based functional foods in mitigating Pb-related health risks.

Abstract

Scattergories game is a version of the category game that promotes broad word acquisition. This research aims to prove whether the use of the Scattergories game can develop vocabulary mastery of the seventh-grade students at SMP Negeri 1 Parigi. This research used a quasi-experimental design involving two groups: experimental and control groups. The population consisted of five seventh-grade classes. The test was administered twice as a pre-test and post-test to assess students’ vocabulary mastery before and after the treatment. Because the data were not normally distributed, the data were analyzed using the Mann-Whitney U test through SPSS version 24. This finding showed a difference in mean scores post-test of the control and experimental groups, where the mean scores of the control group were 78 and the experimental group were 85. The Mann-Whitney test showed that there was a significant increase in the experimental classes (Z = -1.975, p = 0.048). This result suggests that the Scattergories game effectively enhances vocabulary mastery of the seventh-grade students, making the learning process more engaging and impactful.

Abstract

Nutrition education is a comprehensive process aimed at changing community behavior so that healthy dietary habits can be applied in daily life. Understanding the local nutritional status supports the implementation of nutrition education programs that can lead to positive changes in knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors related to food and nutrition. This community service activity aimed to identify the prevalence of nutritional problems, specifically anemia and chronic energy deficiency (CED), and subsequently provide nutrition counseling to adolescents. The program was conducted at SMA Negeri 3 Kendari in August 2023, involving 92 female students from grades 10 and 11. The activities were carried out over two days: on the first day anthropometric measurements and blood sampling (hemoglobin testing) were performed, while the second day was dedicated to nutrition counseling. The results showed that 67.3% of students suffered from CED and 42.6% from anemia. Post-counseling evaluation indicated that the majority of participants (78.3%) demonstrated sufficient nutrition knowledge. These findings suggest that school-based direct nutrition education interventions are an effective strategy for improving the nutrition knowledge of adolescent girls, particularly those experiencing CED and anemia. Such interventions should be implemented continuously and expanded to other schools. Collaboration between schools and health professionals is recommended to integrate nutrition education into regular school programs, including periodic monitoring of nutritional status and hemoglobin levels. Achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) This community service activity focused on preventing nutritional problems among adolescent girls through screening for anemia and CED. The outcomes contribute to Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 3: Ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages. Specifically, it supports Target 3.4, which aims by 2030 to reduce premature mortality from non-communicable diseases by one-third through prevention and treatment, and to promote mental health and well-being.
