Abstract

This study aims to identify the presence of Escherichia coli and Salmonella sp. in "ayam geprek" products sold at the canteens of Tadulako University. The type of research used is descriptive-exploratory with quantitative examination methods using the Most Probable Number (MPN), Total Plate Count (TPC), and further identification using the Microbact System and Microbact System 2000 Software. Samples were taken from three different faculty canteens using a stratified random sampling technique. The results showed that (1) Test using the Most Probable Number (MPN) method obtained the highest value of 150x102 CFU / ml came from the FMIPA canteen sample, 28x102 CFU / ml samples from the FKIP canteen and the lowest value of 27x102 CFU / ml samples from the FKIP canteen. (2) Test using the Total PlateCount (TPC) method obtained the highest value of 105x103 CFU / ml came from the FMIPA canteen sample, 217x102 CFU / ml FKIP canteen sample, and the lowest value of 120x102 CFU / ml FKIP canteen sample. (3) Validation identification of the percentage of samples showing contamination by Escherichia coli and Salmonella sp., with a validation level above 90%. Thus, all samples in this study were positive for the presence of Escherichia coli and Salmonella sp. bacteria.

Abstract

English vocabulary serves as an essential basis for enhancing students’ communicative competence. However, numerous EFL learners still struggle to master this component, and there is a limited amount of research exploring the use of the Taboo Game as a vocabulary enhancement tool in junior high school settings. Therefore, this research seeks to investigate how the Taboo Game can enhance the vocabulary mastery of seventh-grade students at SMP Negeri Model Terpadu Madani. This research employed a quasi-experimental approach, involving two classes: VII Lamalonda, the experimental group, and VII Erwin Sumampau, the control group, which were selected through purposive sampling. The study utilised pre-tests and post-tests as instruments to assess students’ vocabulary performance. The findings showed that the experimental group’s post-test mean score (88) exceeded that of the control group (61). The analysis using SPSS 27 showed that the significance value (Asymp. Sig. 2-tailed) of 0.000 was below the 0.05 threshold, indicating that the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted. These findings suggest that the Taboo Game is an effective tool for enhancing students’ vocabulary mastery in English language instruction. This highlights that the implementation of the Taboo Game can foster active participation, motivation, and retention of vocabulary.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to demonstrate whether providing grade eight students at SMP Negeri 1 Poso Pesisir Selatan with English songs may enhance their pronunciation. In contrast to the sounds in Indonesian, this investigation focused on the dental and palato-alveolar fricative sounds. In this quasi-experimental study, data from both the experimental and control groups were used, including pre-test and post-test results. Passing the pronunciation test required students to enunciate minimal pairs. Six treatment sessions were conducted with the experimental group, with the primary goal of listening to and practicing the pronunciation of specific songs. The results showed improvement in pronunciation ability, with a p-value of 0.000 < 0.05, and the average score increased after the treatment. This study offers practical implications for English teachers to integrate engaging media into pronunciation instruction, encouraging better articulation and fluency. The findings suggest that English songs can serve as effective learning media to improve students' English pronunciation.

Abstract

The aim of this research was to prove whether implementation of Peer Feedback effectively improve students’ writing skill. This study employed a quasi-experimental design. The population involved all eleventh-grade students at SMA Negeri 1 Bungku Tengah, totaling 277 learners. To determine the Experimental and Control groups, the researcher used cluster random sampling. The researcher used a descriptive text writing test to collect data in terms of pretest and posttest. However, only the experimental class received peer feedback treatment while the control group received other treatments. Organization, Content, vocabulary, grammar, and mechanics were the focus of this study. The results demonstrated that once peer feedback was introduced, the experimental group outperformed the control group on the post-test, with a mean score of 76.12 compared to 61.78. Meanwhile, analysis of the pre-test indicated that there was no statistically significant difference between the two groups’ average scores. In addition, the obtained significance value (2-tailed) was 0.001, which is lower than the standard level of 0.05. This suggests that the use of peer feedback has a statistically significant and meaningful effect on improving students’ writing skill. Consequently, peer feedback can be considered an advisable strategy for writing instruction.

Abstract

Passive voice remains a key grammatical structure for English learners, particularly in academic writing, yet many students struggle to use it accurately. This study analyzes the types of passive voice errors made by 19 fifth-semester students in the English Education Study Program at Tadulako University. Specifically, it addresses two questions: (1) How do classroom interaction patterns such as teacher-centered grammar instruction, limited student negotiation of meaning, or feedback practices shape students’ understanding and use of passive voice, and to what extent might these dynamics contribute to the dominance of developmental errors? (2) In what ways do students’ sociocultural backgrounds, prior educational experiences, and exposure to English outside the classroom influence their difficulties with auxiliary verbs and tense agreement, and how do these factors mediate tensions between Indonesian linguistic norms and English academic writing conventions? A quantitative design was employed, with a test focusing on passive constructions in present continuous, past continuous, and past perfect tenses. Students’ responses were categorized using Dulay et al.'s (1982) comparative taxonomy of developmental and interlingual errors. Results revealed developmental errors as the most prevalent (89.9%), mainly involving incorrect auxiliary verbs (is, am, are, being, been), past participle formation, and tense agreement. These findings highlight the need for targeted grammar instruction on auxiliary patterns and participles, alongside enhanced practice, corrective feedback, and adjustments to classroom interactions and sociocultural considerations to boost accuracy.
