Abstract

Elderly people are a population group that experiences various physiological changes with age that affect nutritional status. Food consumption and the body's utilization of nutrients can be used to estimate nutritional status. The Body Mass Index and Waist Circumference are two methods used to evaluate the nutritional condition of the elderly. This study purpose to determine the nutritional status based on Body Mass Index and Waist Circumference in the elderly in the Aisyiyah regional leadership of Tasikmalaya City. This research method used a descriptive study with a cross-sectional design. The number of samples in this study was 33 elderly people with an accidental sampling technique. Interviews were conducted with the research subjects to obtain age data, then body weight, height and waist circumference were taken. The analysis used univariate analysis, namely frequency distribution. The results of the study showed that the nutritional status of respondents based on BMI was mostly normal, as many as 19 people (58%), while the nutritional status of respondents based on waist circumference was mostly central obesity, as many as 26 people (79%). Although the nutritional status of respondents based on BMI was mostly normal, most of the respondents' waist circumference experienced central obesity. This deserves attention, because central obesity can increase the risk factors for metabolic and cardiovascular disorders, therefore it is recommended that waist circumference can be reduced.

Abstract

Tuberculosis (TB) remains a major health problem in Indonesia, which ranks third in the world for the highest number of TB cases. TB patients generally have characteristics such as being of productive age, elderly, working in environments with pollution exposure, and having positive BTA test results. This study aims to identify the characteristics of family support for TB patients at the Tamansari Community Health Center, Tasikmalaya City. The research used a quantitative method with a population of 55 TB patients in the Tamansari Health Center working area. Results showed that most respondents were over 32 years old (43.6%) and had a junior high school education (45.5%). Regarding family support, 38 respondents (69.1%) received positive support, while 17 respondents (30.9%) experienced negative support. The findings indicate that the majority of TB patients receive positive family support. Family support plays an important role in the recovery and adherence to treatment of TB patients. Therefore, involving families in TB management is essential to improve treatment outcomes.

Abstract

Background: Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) poses a significant burden among older adults in rural communities due to limited health literacy, inadequate access to services, and deeply rooted cultural practices. Family involvement is often essential yet unsupported by structured interventions. Purpose: This study aimed to develop a culturally contextual Family Empowerment Model based on Family-Centered Care (FCC) to strengthen diabetes self-management among older adults with T2DM in rural settings. Methods: A descriptive qualitative design was employed, involving 21 participants (older adults, family caregivers, and health workers) from Sukamaju Village, Tasikmalaya, Indonesia. Data were collected through in-depth interviews and focus group discussions, and analyzed using Braun and Clarke’s thematic analysis framework. Results: Four main themes were identified: (1) Family as the first line of care, (2) Cultural and spiritual values in caregiving, (3) Need for empowerment and health literacy, and (4) Community health workers as bridging agents. These findings informed a structured empowerment model encompassing family roles, cultural alignment, health education, and community engagement. Conclusion: The FCC-based Family Empowerment Model offers a comprehensive, culturally appropriate approach to improve T2DM care in rural areas. It has the potential to enhance self-care capacity, reduce caregiver burden, and strengthen community-based health systems.

Abstract

Diabetes Mellitus (DM) remains a major public health concern in Indonesia, with a steadily increasing prevalence. One of the most serious complications of DM is diabetic foot ulcer infection, which contributes to increased morbidity, prolonged hospitalization, and reduced quality of life. Effective management of diabetic ulcer infections requires not only multidisciplinary healthcare interventions but also adequate self-efficacy, positive self-concept, and effective self-management among patients. The study aimed to examine the relationship between diabetic ulcer infection and self-efficacy, self-concept, and self-management among patients with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus. This quantitative study employed a cross-sectional design. A total of 30 patients with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus and diabetic ulcer infections were recruited using purposive sampling at Pasar Rebo Regional General Hospital. Data were collected using the Diabetes Management Self-Efficacy Scale (DMSES), Tennessee Self-Concept Scale (TSCS), Diabetes Self-Management Questionnaire (DSMQ), and the Wagner Classification Scale for diabetic ulcer assessment. Significant relationships were found between diabetic ulcer infection severity and self-efficacy, self-concept, and self-management (p < 0.05). Self-efficacy and self-management demonstrated strong correlations with ulcer severity, while self-concept showed a moderate correlation. Self-efficacy, self-concept, and self-management are significantly associated with diabetic ulcer infection severity among patients with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus. Enhancing these factors may improve diabetic ulcer management and patient outcomes.

Abstract

Kata Kunci: Hand, Foot, and Mouth Disease (HFMD), Komik Digital, Edukasi Kesehatan, Sekolah Dasar, Pengabdian Kepada Masyarakat.     ABSTRACT Hand, Foot, and Mouth Disease (HFMD) is an infection that commonly affects school-aged children and remains a public health issue in Malaysia. Observations at the Sanggar Bimbingan Indonesia in Kuala Langat indicate that many students have never received specific education about HFMD, so their understanding of its causes, symptoms, modes of transmission, and preventive measures remains limited. This community service activity aims to provide education on HFMD prevention through the use of English-language digital comics and to encourage students to adopt a clean and healthy lifestyle. In addition to delivering health education, the use of English-language digital comics also supports the introduction of basic English vocabulary, making the learning process more engaging and contextual. The activity was held at Sanggar Bimbingan Indonesia in Kuala Langat, Selangor, Malaysia, and involved 50 elementary school students. The methods employed included observation, education, demonstration, practice, mentoring, and evaluation, carried out over three days through the presentation of materials, learning using English-language digital comics, practicing proper handwashing techniques, and monitoring the implementation of healthy and hygienic behaviors. The results of the activity showed that students enthusiastically participated in the entire series of activities, were able to understand the material presented through digital comics, and were able to practice proper handwashing steps during the evaluation phase. The implementation of the activity also demonstrated that an approach integrating visual media with hands-on practice can enhance student participation during the learning process. This activity demonstrates that digital comics in English can be used as an engaging and interactive health education tool to support the development of health literacy and the adoption of healthy and hygienic behaviors as a preventive measure against HFMD among elementary school students. Keywords: Hand, Foot, and Mouth Disease (HFMD), Digital Comics, Health Education, Elementary School, Community Service.

Abstract

Hypertension is a non-communicable disease with the highest incidence and mortality rate in the world. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of health promotion in controlling hypertension in the elderly in the community. This research method uses a literature review, with data sources coming from Google Scholar, PubMed, and Garuda Portal. Articles were taken according to the inclusion criteria, namely quasi-experiment design, hypertensive elderly subjects, and full-text articles published in 2020-2025. Exclusion criteria included articles that did not meet the full research structure, review-based articles, or articles with content not relevant to the topic. From the search and selection results using the PRISMA framework, 20 relevant articles were obtained for analysis. The review results showed that health promotion was effective in reducing blood pressure, accompanied by significant statistical test results on systolic and diastolic pressure. This therapeutic effect is thought to be related to the ability of health promotion to provide relaxation, reduce anxiety, and stabilize hormones that affect blood pressure. This study recommends health promotion as a non-pharmacological approach to help manage hypertension in the elderly.
