Abstract

Small-scale goat farmers play a vital role in supplying animal protein in Indonesia but continue to face challenges in improving productivity and livelihood, particularly due to suboptimal reproductive and health management of their livestock. This study aims to assess the impact of improved reproductive and health management practices on the welfare of smallholder goat farmers. The methods employed included technical training, field mentoring, and evaluation of animal health conditions before and after intervention. The results showed that implementing proper reproductive management—such as heat cycle tracking, selection of superior bucks, and systematic disease prevention and treatment—led to increased birth rates and decreased kid mortality. Consequently, farmers’ income rose by an average of 25% within one production cycle. This study highlights the importance of an integrated approach to reproductive and health management as an effective strategy to sustainably enhance smallholder farmers’ welfare.

Abstract

The development of Bali cattle faces challenges, including increasingly limited land for both livestockfarming and forage crops. This research aims to assess the potential of Tinanggea District, SouthKonawe Regency, as a development area for Bali cattle breeding. The field study was conducted fromFebruary to March 2023. The research location was selected through purposive sampling, specifically inTinanggea District, which serves as one of the central regions for Bali cattle seed sources. Respondentswere determined using a census method, involving a total of 716 livestock farmers. To analyze thecollected data, several analytical approaches were employed, including economic density, farm density, area density, and the Capacity for Increasing Bali Cattle Population (CIBCP). The analysis resultsrevealed that economic density falls into the moderate category with a value of 86.09 Livestock Units(LU) per 1.000 people. Farm density is also categorized as moderate, with a value of 0.27 LU per hectare, while area density is considered low, with a value of 6.27 LU per square kilometer. The combinationof livestock density identified as a Development Area (DA) was found in the economic–farm densitycombination, while the Distribution and Development Area (DDA) was identified in both the economic–area and farm–area combinations. The effective CIBCP value in Tinanggea District still shows potentialfor an increase of up to 293 LU. At the village level, the effective CIBCP values in Tinanggea Districtcan be grouped into three development categories: high (4 villages), moderate (3 villages), and low (17villages). Roraya Village has the highest effective CIBCP value, amounting to 116 LU, whereas the villagewith the lowest value is Telutu Jaya, which has an effective CIBCP of -193 LU

Abstract

The aim of this study was to determine the best combination of cryoprotectant (Ethylene glycol, EG), dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) and propanediol (PrOH) and carrier system (hemistraw and cryotop) in improving ewe oocytes viability during cryopreservation. Oocytes with multi layers of compact cumulus cells were colleted from abbatoir and matured in TCM 199 medium supplemented with 10% fetal calf serum for 24-26 h at 38.5 C under 5% CO2 in the air. Matured oocyte was divided into six parts and vitrified in three different vitrification solutions; (i) 17% EG+17% DMSO with hemistraw as carrier system, (ii) 34% EG with hemistraw as carrier system, (iii) 17% EG+17% PrOH in hemistraw (iv), 17% EG+17% DMSO with cryotop as carrier system (v), 34% EG with cryotop as carrier system (vi), and 17% EG+17% PrOH in cryotop. Oocytes were cryopreserved for one week before revived and evaluated for viability. The result showed that oocytes vitrified in media containing EG and DMSO in cryotop had the highest viability (88.16%) compared to media containing EG only or EG and PrOH (70.95% and 68.76%, respectively) (P0.05). Moreover, oocytes viability that vitrified using cryotop and hemistraw as carrier system were not significantly different. The present results indicated that vitrification using combination of EG and DMSO as permeable cryoprotectant and cryotop as carrier system was the best system to maintain oocyte viability after vitrification-warming.

This study is conducted to analyze livestock density (area density, farming density, economic density) and the capacity to increase the ruminant population (CIRP) in Buke District, South Konawe Regency. The research location is determined through purposive sampling in Buke Subdistrict, South Konawe Regency, with all Bali cattle breeders in the area being involved as respondents, totaling 734 breeders. The data are analyzed using livestock density analysis (area density, farming density, economic density) (Ashari et al., 1995), a combination of livestock density (Rahaeni, 2014), and the capacity to increase the ruminant population (CIRP) (Fariani, 2008). Based on the study results, it is shown that the density of Bali cattle in Buke Subdistrict is at an economic density of 97,11 AU/1,000 people, a farm density of 0,16 AU/ha, and an area density of 7,75 AU/km². The combination of livestock density is categorized as a dispersal and development area, while the capacity based on natural resources is recorded at 4.951 AU. Therefore, it is concluded that the density of Bali cattle in Buke Subdistrict varies depending on the indicators used. In economic terms, livestock density is classified as medium, whereas in terms of land area and regional distribution, it is considered sparse. Overall, the area is categorized as a dispersal and development region, with the capacity to accommodate Bali cattle based on available natural resources.
