Abstract

The crisis of rationality and the decline of critical thinking among students have become urgent challenges in contemporary Islamic education. Phenomena such as blind obedience to religious figures, emotional fanaticism in public discourse, and the lack of reflective reasoning among learners indicate the need for a reorientation of Islamic educational paradigms. This article aims to revitalize the function of Ilm al-Kalam as the foundation for strengthening rationality and theological consciousness within Islamic education. Using a qualitative-descriptive approach and a review of classical and contemporary literature, this study explores the rational, argumentative, and ethical dimensions of Ilm al-Kalam that can be integrated into the curriculum and learning process of Islamic Religious Education (PAI). The findings reveal that applying the principles of Ilm al-Kalam fosters critical thinking, reasoned faith, and a balanced understanding of creed in the modern socio-religious context. The revitalization of Ilm al-Kalam thus represents not only theological reinforcement but also an epistemological transformation toward a rational, dialogical, and civilized Islamic education.

Abstract

Bullying is a crucial issue within the school environment. Bullying behavior can have highly detrimental physical and mental impacts on victims; therefore, there is a need for educational governance policies that align with Islamic Sharia. This is essential to achieve benefit (maslahah) and well-being in accordance with Maqashid Sharia (the objectives of Sharia). This study aims to analyze and examine Maqashid Sharia within the framework of educational governance, specifically the relevance of the principle of Hifz an-Nafs (protection of life) toward anti-bullying policies in schools. The method applied in this study is a literature review, utilizing books, scientific journals, research reports, and other relevant documents applicable to the social situation under investigation. The results of this study indicate that the principles of Maqashid Sharia integrated into Hifz an-Nafs are effective because they are supported by the fundamental belief that safeguarding human life is an ethical imperative aimed at the welfare of the community, particularly in school governance.

Abstract

Islamic education places educators as the primary figures in the formation of morals, character, and spiritual development of students, especially at the elementary school level. This article aims to explain the concept of educators in Islam, which includes the roles of muaddib, murabbi, muallim, muzakki, and mursyid, and analyze its application by Islamic Religious Education teachers in elementary schools. This study uses a qualitative approach through field research, with data collection techniques in the form of observation, structured interviews, and documentation. Research informants include Islamic Religious Education teachers, the principal, the teacher council, students, and parents at Padang Sago 06 Public Elementary School, Padang Pariaman Regency, Indonesia. Data were analyzed through a process of reduction, presentation, and verification to obtain a complete picture of the implementation of the concept of Islamic educators in learning practices. The results of the study indicate that Islamic Religious Education teachers have implemented Islamic educational values through exemplary behavior, fostering good manners, developing student potential, delivering knowledge systematically, and spiritual guidance. The implementation of educators' roles as muaddib, murabbi, muallim, muzakki, and mursyid has a positive impact on strengthening students' religious character, discipline, and social behavior. These findings imply the importance of improving the capacity of Islamic Religious Education teachers to further integrate Islamic educational values into the learning process in elementary schools.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the implementation of moral values among Islamic boarding school students based on the thoughts of Burhanuddin al-Zarnuji as described in the book Ta'lim al- Muta'allim at the Darul 'Ulum Islamic Boarding School in Padang. The type of research used is field research with a descriptive qualitative approach. Data was obtained through observation, interviews, and documentation, which were then analyzed in depth to describe the application of moral values in the lives of santri. The results of the study show that the process of moral character building at the Darul 'Ulum Islamic Boarding School has been going well and reflects the main values in Ta'lim al-Muta'allim, such as respect for teachers, politeness, discipline, and manners towards knowledge and others. The main supporting factors for this success include the exemplary behavior of the teachers, the role of senior students, and a conducive and religious boarding school environment. However, the process of moral development still faces several obstacles, such as a lack of dormitory supervisors, limited facilities and infrastructure, and the influence of outside cultures that cannot be completely avoided. This study concludes that the character building of students at the Darul 'Ulum Islamic Boarding School has shown positive results, but needs to be strengthened in terms of guidance and supervision so that moral values are not only understood conceptually, but are truly internalized in the behavior and character of the students.

Abstract

Amid the challenges of globalization and the digital age, Islamic education faces a profound crisis: how to weave classical spiritual heritage with the imperative for modern inclusivity. This context motivates an innovative exploration synthesizing Al-Ghazali's epistemology, which integrates irfani (intuitive) and rational dimensions, with Fazlur Rahman's contextual hermeneutical approach. The primary goal is to establish an inclusive epistemology as a robust foundation for a modern Islamic curriculum, achieved through a deep comparative analysis of both thinkers' ideas, aimed at developing a pedagogy that embraces diversity, critical thinking, and humanistic values within pluralistic societies like Indonesia. Employing a qualitative method based on library research and descriptive-analytic comparative analysis, this study examines primary sources, including Al-Ghazali's Ihya Ulum al-Din and Fazlur Rahman's Islam and Modernity, triangulated with secondary literature on knowledge integration. The synthesis yields an inclusive curricular framework that unites textual, rational, and intuitive dimensions. This framework is highly relevant for reforming Islamic Religious Education (PAI) through models based on Qur'anic justice, fostering a generation adaptive to contemporary issues. This research's core contribution is bridging the gap between tradition and innovation, thereby promoting a more vibrant, inclusive, and globally competitive Islamic education.

Abstract

The development of digital technology has given rise to a new phenomenon in the form of online begging practices through live streaming and giving gifts on social media. This activity is often carried out by displaying acts of humiliation or exploiting certain conditions in order to gain public sympathy, thus having an impact on weakening work ethics and economic independence of the community. From an Islamic perspective, work is a form of maintaining dignity, and the hadith emphasizes the virtue of giving rather than asking without urgent need. This study aims to describe the phenomenon of online begging, analyze the hadith about the prohibition of begging and the encouragement of independence, and explain its relevance to digital ethics. This research uses a qualitative approach with library research. The results of this study found that the phenomenon of online begging is not in accordance with Islamic work ethics. In the Islamic perspective, work is a noble activity and is part of worship, while begging without urgent need is a despicable act that damages one's honor. The Prophet's hadiths encourage Muslims to be productive, independent, and self-reliant. As stated in the hadith about the priority of the hands above is better than the hands below.

Abstract

This study examines the model and achievements of zakat management during the reign of Caliph Umar bin Abdul Aziz (717–720 AD), known as a period of socio-economic reform in Islamic history. Umar bin Abdul Aziz succeeded in establishing a transparent, fair, and effective zakat system, so that poverty was almost nonexistent in his territory. In addition, this study also examines various problems in zakat management in Indonesia and presents solutions or suggestions for zakat management in Indonesia. This study uses a historical-descriptive approach through a review of classical and contemporary literature. The results show that the success of zakat management during Umar bin Abdul Aziz's reign was due to three main factors: leadership integrity, administrative reform based on sharia, and the implementation of productive zakat distribution. Meanwhile, the main problems in zakat management today are the problem of inadequate human resources, lack of integrity in zakat management, lack of transparency and accountability, and the use of technology that is not yet optimal. The findings of Umar bin Abdul Aziz's successful zakat management are considered highly relevant as a model for zakat policy in the modern era, aimed at building a just and sustainable Islamic economy, particularly in addressing various zakat problems and managing them.

Abstract

This article examines the urgent need for a holistic philosophy of Islamic education capable of responding to moral, intellectual, and social challenges in Indonesia’s digital era. It aims to construct an integrative educational framework by synthesizing classical Islamic educational thought with contemporary reformist approaches, focusing particularly on Al-Ghazali’s concept of tazkiyah nafs and Fazlur Rahman’s double movement methodology. Employing qualitative library research, the study analyzes primary philosophical texts and key secondary literature through thematic content analysis, comparative interpretation, and conceptual synthesis, allowing classical and modern perspectives to be read dialogically and contextualized within current educational realities. The findings demonstrate that each thinker contributes a distinct but complementary dimension: Al-Ghazali emphasizes spiritual purification and moral formation; Ibn Sina highlights systematic intellectual development; Ibn Rushd advances the harmony of reason and revelation; Ibn Khaldun situates education within social and civilizational dynamics; and Fazlur Rahman provides a methodological bridge for reinterpreting Islamic ethical principles in contemporary contexts. Their synthesis results in a holistic epistemological model integrating textual reasoning, rational inquiry, and spiritual intuition, grounded in the objectives of Islamic law. The discussion shows that this model offers practical implications for curriculum design, teacher roles, and ethical engagement with digital technology, including responses to radicalism, moral erosion, and artificial intelligence. The study concludes that a synthesized philosophy of Islamic education can serve as a viable foundation for revitalizing Islamic education in Indonesia, fostering spiritually grounded, intellectually critical, and socially responsible learners in the digital age

Abstract

Ijtihad, mufti, and fatwa constitute fundamental elements in the Islamic legal system that ensure the continuity and adaptability of Sharia law across changing times. In the contemporary era, the rapid development of Artificial Intelligence (AI) introduces new dynamics in Islamic legal scholarship, particularly in relation to legal reasoning and fatwa issuance. This study aims to examine the position of ijtihad, mufti, and fatwa in the age of AI and to analyze the extent to which AI can be utilized without replacing the authority of human scholars. The research employs a qualitative approach through library research, drawing on classical and contemporary works of usul al-fiqh, scholarly journal articles, and official documents from religious institutions. The findings indicate that AI lacks essential epistemological and ethical qualities required for ijtihad, such as moral responsibility, intention, and contextual understanding of social realities and maqasid al-shari‘ah. Consequently, AI cannot function as a mujtahid or mufti in determining Islamic legal rulings. Instead, it may serve as a supportive tool to assist scholars in accessing legal sources, conducting textual analysis, and managing religious data more efficiently. The study also identifies key ethical challenges related to authority, accountability, data bias, and contextual sensitivity that must be addressed to ensure responsible use of AI in Islamic law. This research contributes conceptually by clarifying the methodological boundaries of AI in Islamic legal reasoning and emphasizing the continued central role of qualified scholars in fatwa formulation.
