Abstract

Mangosteen requires drought condition to induce flowering, however extending drought period might restrict the plant growth. Therefore, the response of mangosteen to drought stress needs to be studied. This research conducted on May to July 2017 using Randomized Block Design with one factor. The experiment comprised of 4 levels of polyethylene glycol (PEG 6000) treatment, i.e., PEG 0%, PEG 10% (-0.03 MPa), PEG 15% (-0.41 MPa) dan PEG 20% (-0.67 MPa) (m.v-1). The results showed that there is a dryness of the mangosteen leaves given PEG which occured slowly, starting from the edge of the leaves into the center of midrib. Water consumption was fluctuated until the end of experiment, which the highest was 33.33 ml per day in 0% PEG treated plant, then decreased until 10 ml per day in 20% PEG treated plant. Proline content increased from the first week to the third week after all PEG treatments. The highest proline content were found in 15% PEG (22.14 umol.g-1) and 20% PEG (23.46 umol.g-1) treated plants. Plant dry mass was low under water stress, and more severe stress resulted in more reduction of plant dry mass level. Water stress did not affect the N and Mg content significantly, but reduced P content in mangosteen seedling. Keywords: evapotranspiration, nutrient content, proline, water stress

Abstract

Abstract

Plant spacing arrangement might benefit hill strength from the impact of strong wind velocity during extreme weather situations. Here, a loading test to evaluate rice hill strength was performed on Ciherang variety grown in square and double row spacing 2:1. The research was conducted at Cilubang village, Dramaga, Bogor, West Java, Indonesia from March to May 2017. Weight holding capacity was evaluated in 85 days after transplanting on four levels of hill height, i.e., 80 cm, 60 cm, 40 cm, and 20 cm above soil level with three-time replication. The results showed that double-spaced hills had 66.0 % ± 3.1 % stronger than those of square spacing at all height measurement. To lodge a hill into 20 cm to 40 cm from soil level, it required 346.7 g to 741.7 g in square spacing, and 555.2 g to 1149.2 g in double row spacing. Stronger hills in double row spacing seemed to correlate with a higher number of tiller and hills architecture; it requires further study in the role of both factors on the hill strength improvement. The present study recommends applying double row spacing to improve rice hill strength especially at a time with a high chance of lodging by strong wind incident.

Abstract

The experiments of vacuum-asisted seed invigoration was conducted in Bogor, Indonesia, in order to increase crop production of iles-iles (Amorphophallus muelleri). This research was conducted in two series of experiments. The first experiment was conducted to determine the level of vacuum. The research was using 5 treatments i.e., control 1 (soaked in the water), control 2 (soaked in a solution of 2% N), control 3 (vacuum in water media), vacuum in solution containing 2% N, 4% N, 2% NPK (2:1:1), 4% NPK, vacuum in solution of supplementary liquid fertilizer (PPC) 2% and 4% PPC. The results of of the first experiment showed that the vacuum treatment increased the germination of iles-iles, the best vacuum pressure was -250mmHg. In the second experiment, the vacuum in a solution 4% PPC generated the highest growth followed by vacuum in 2% solution of NPK and 4% of PPC. In addition, the vacuum in the nutrient solution over 4% lead to inhibition of growth. The implication of this study is that the provision of nutrients in the seeds can increase plant growth of iles-iles. Vacuum treatment can enhance the effectiveness of invigoration. Keywords : NPK, PPC, seed treatment, starter solution, vacuum

Abstract

To mitigate the impact of extreme weather incidents, rice cultivars Way Seputih (WS) and Way Apo Buru (WAB) were evaluated under simulation of continuous wind and rainfall treatments. The research was conducted from July to October 2017 at Leuwikopo Experimental Farm, Bogor, Indonesia. For 15 days at day time, flowering rice hills were treated with about 100 mm/h water shower (Experiment-1), and with 0, 10-15, 20-25 and 35-40 km/h wind velocity (Experiment-2). Results showed that wind and rainfall treatments reduced rice production; the effect depended on the genotypes and flowering stage. Rain treatment from panicle emergence to 50%-emerged increased the number of unfilled grains by 154.6-182.3% and 55.7-101.9% in WS and WAB cultivars, respectively. Rain treatment at 100%-emerged had no effect on WS, but it increased unfilled grain (163.5%) and decreased grain index (12.9%) in the WAB cultivar. Wind speed at 35-40 km/h promoted a high percentage of grain drop (25.7%) and unfilled grains (77.3%), and low grain index (20.8 g) in WS genotype. WAB was more tolerant of wind stress than the WS. The present experiment showed that genotype had different responses to wind and rain treatments implying different mitigation strategies should be applied through genotype selection.
