Abstract

Neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), an accessible biomarker derived from routine blood counts, has been associated with stroke severity and outcomes. However, its association with angiographically confirmed stenosis has not been fully established. The aim of this study was to investigate the correlation and association between the NLR and the severity of intracranial arterial stenosis assessed by digital subtraction angiography (DSA). An observational analytic study with a cross-sectional design was conducted. Patients with acute ischemic stroke who underwent DSA were included using a total sampling method. Eligible patients were aged >18 years, had ischemic stroke onset <14 days, and had no prior thrombolysis, endovascular treatment, or surgery for cerebral stenosis. Those with infection, hematological disorders, malignancy, or immunosuppression were excluded. NLR was calculated from complete blood count results at admission, while stenosis severity was quantified using the Warfarin–Aspirin Symptomatic Intracranial Disease (WASID) method. A total of 44 ischemic stroke patients who underwent DSA were included. Pearson correlation test revealed a strong positive correlation between NLR and the severity of intracranial arterial stenosis (r=0.671; p<0.001). In subgroup analysis, NLR showed a strong positive correlation with stenosis severity in the cerebral arteries (r=0.707; p<0.001), but not in the carotid arteries (r=0.434; p=0.182). One-way ANOVA revealed significant differences in NLR across stenosis severity groups (p<0.0001), with higher NLR in moderate and severe stenosis compared with mild stenosis (p=0.017 and p=0.0003, respectively). These findings suggest that NLR reflects the inflammatory burden contributing to vascular narrowing and may serve as a simple and widely available biomarker for identifying ischemic stroke patients with a higher burden of intracranial arterial stenosis, particularly in settings where access to advanced imaging is limited.

Abstract

The growing demand for sustainable construction materials has encouraged research on the utilization of multilayer aluminum plastic waste and low-density polyethylene (LDPE) waste as substitution materials in the production of paving blocks. This study emphasizes abrasion resistance as a key indicator of paving block quality. The waste materials were processed through melting and subsequently blended with fine aggregates of sand and combustion ash in varying compositions. The abrasion resistance value obtained was 0.0771 mm/min, which corresponded to the Class B quality standard as specified in SNI 03-0691-1996. The results demonstrate that incorporating multilayer aluminum plastic and LDPE waste at a proportion of 65% enhances the abrasion resistance of paving blocks compared to conventional ones. This improvement is attributed to the plasticity of LDPE, which increases flexibility and reduces microcracking, as well as the contribution of aluminum layers that provide greater resistance to friction. Further analysis suggests that paving blocks incorporating multilayer aluminum plastic and LDPE waste are suitable for use in residential roads, village pathways, and office yards subject to moderate vehicle traffic. These findings support the notion that integrating multilayer aluminum plastic waste into construction materials not only improves the technical performance of the product but also offers a strategic solution to reduce the accumulation of non-biodegradable waste.

Abstract

Environmental concerns regarding polypropylene (PP) plastic waste have driven the demand for more sustainable alternative materials through composite development. This study aims to analyze the effect of adding Sokka roof tile particles as a filler on the flame retardancy and impact toughness of ramie fiber-reinforced composites. The composite materials utilize a polypropylene matrix, ramie fiber reinforcement, and Sokka roof tile particles as filler with concentration variations of 2%, 4%, and 6%. The results demonstrate that increasing the filler volume significantly improves the material's flame-retardant properties, with the 6% variation achieving the best thermal performance and the lowest burn rate of 214.27 mm/min. However, in terms of mechanical properties, a decline in impact toughness was observed as the filler content increased; the average energy absorption dropped from 1.075 Joules at 2% concentration to 0.735 Joules at 6%, which is consistent with the decrease in impact strength from 0.0364 J/mm² to 0.0204 J/mm². This phenomenon indicates that while inorganic particles effectively serve as a thermal barrier, excessively high concentrations increase material brittleness, thereby reducing the impact energy absorption capacity. In conclusion, a 6% concentration of Sokka roof tile particles is recommended for applications prioritizing fire safety, while considering the compromise in mechanical strength.
