Abstract

This study was investigated the realization of ideational grammatical metaphors in editorials of The Jakarta Post Newspaper. The objectives of this study were to identify the types of ideational grammatical metaphor are found in editorials texts of, to describe how the ideational grammatical metaphor lingustically realized in the editorials text, and to explain the reasons for the used of ideational grammatical metaphors. This study was conducted by using descriptive qualitative research. The sourceof data were editorials of The Jakarta Post newspaper, published on http://www.thejakartapost.com/chanel/editorial, which containing of six editorials written in January 2015 episode. The data were the texts containing of ideational grammatical metaphors. The data were analyzed based on  the Sistemic Functional Language approach. The result showed that there were four types of ideational grammatical metaphor, namely adjective =>noun, verb =>noun, verb =>adjective, adverb =>adjective. The dominant type of ideational grammatical  metaphor in the editorials is verb =>adjective. The reasons of ideational grammatical metaphor used in the editorials was due to nominalization and condensation. Grammatical metaphor as a model of language was needed to help people to understand how a text work to make meaning and all meaning was situated in context of situation and context of culture. There was a great deal of variation among different register in the degree and types of metaphor that was encountered. Abstract

The aims of this study were to find out the kinds of figures of speech in surah Ar-Rahman, and to investigate realization of figures of speech in surah Ar-Rahman. The research was conducted by using qualitative descriptive design. The data of this study were 78 verses of surah Ar –Rahman. Besides, Miles, Huberman’s, and Saldana’s analysis applied in this study. In addition, Keraf theory (2004) was used in this study to find out kinds of figures of speech in surah Ar-Rahman, and Arp and Perrine theory (1963) was applied to investigate realization of figures of speech in surah Ar-rahman. The results of this study were (1) There were 10 kinds figures of speech in surah Ar-Rahman namely 3 Simile 2 Personifications 1 Apophasis 31 Repetition 2 Paralellism 1 Apostrophe  2 Pleonasm 1 Prolepsis 1 Antonomasia 1 Tautology (2) In realization figures of speech in surah Ar-rahman . ways in figures of speech in surah Ar-Rahman namely explicitly, comparing things, noun, repetition, synonym, denial, redundancy, substitution, and future. Abstract

The research deals with idioms translation strategies. The aims of this study were: (1) to investigate the strategies of translating idioms in Pasung Jiwa novel, (2) to analyze the  process of translation strategies applied in Pasung Jiwa novel, and (3) to describe how the context of idiom translation strategies applied in translating Pasung Jiwa novel. The research was conducted by using qualitative design. The data of this study were words, phrases and clause. The data were collected through documentary technique and the instrument was the documentary sheet. The data were analyzed by using Miles and Huberman’s Interactive Model. The result of this study revealed that: (1) The kinds of idioms translation strategies in Pasung Jiwa Novel found by the researcher namely (a) idiom of similar meaning aand form, (b) idiom of similar meaning but dissimilar form, (c) translating idiom by paraphrase, (d) translating idiom by omission and (e) description strategy. (2) There are four process of idiom translation strategies based on sequences, namely (single process, double process, triple process  and quadruple process) in this study, the most dominant type was single process. triple and quadruple process was not found in this research. (3) From four types of context in translation proposed by Nida (2001), in this study the dominant context was social cultural context. Meanwhile, paralinguistic context and style context were not found. Therefore, in translating idiom, the translators need to know SL/TL culture and its relations to all aspects of cultural background and literature heritage of both languages in translation. The translator wanted the English translated version of Pasung Jiwa Novel easy to understand by the global reader. Abstract

This study investigates the speech acts that are realized by male and female lecturers in the classroom setting. The objectives of this study is to describe the kinds of speech acts are realized by male and female lecturers in the classroom. This research is conducted by using ethnographic design and qualitative approach. The data are the utterances of the lecturers at State Islamic Institute (IAIN) of Zawiyah Cot Kala Langsa. Islamic Education Department lecturers are chosen as the source of data. The data are obtained from observation and the transcription of the recorded of 4 lecturers of 2 males and 2 females lecturers during their teaching performance in the classroom. The findings show that there are three kinds of speech acts that are realized by males and females of 4 lecturers of 2 males and 2 females during their teaching performance in the classroom setting; They are locutionary acts, illocutionary acts and perlocutionary acts. In addition, from 5 types of illocutionary acts such as representatives, directives, commissive, expressive and declaratives, both males and females lecturers only implement 4 types of them; they are representatives, directives, commissive, and expressive, while declarative does not. In addition, in terms of the types of illocutionary acts, males lecturers mostly utilize representatives ways while females mostly implement both representatives and directives ways than other types during their teaching performance.KEYWORDS: Males and Females, Lecturer, Speech Acts, Classroom Setting

Abstract

This study deals with Language Maintenance in Kelurahan Sudirejo II Medan. The objectives of the study are (1) to describe out the factors affecting Mandailing Languagein Kelurahan Sudirejo II Medan (2) to elaborate how Mandailingnese maintain the Mandailing Languagein Kelurahan Sudirejo II Medan, and (3) to reason for the manners or way by which they maintain Mandailing Languagein Kelurahan Sudirejo II Medan. The method of this study was descriptive qualitative research. The participants were twenty Mandailing people who live in Kelurahan Sudirejo II Medan. The data were taken from questionnaire and interview as instrument. Questionnaire was applied to collect the data about the factors affecting the Mandailing Language maintenane and strategies in maintaining ML. While the interview was applied to get data about the reason of Mandailing people maintain Mandailing Language. The data were analyzed by using Miles and Huberman matrix (1994). This research found the following results (1) There are seven factors affecting Mandailing Languagemaintenance in Kelurahan Sudirejo II Medan such as: Use of language in family (intermarriage and intermarriage), visiting homeland,  use of the language in neighborhood domain, ethno linguistic vitality, living together in an area, use of the language in religion and practice of traditional ceremony. (2) to maintain Mandailing Language, the Mandailing people in Kelurahan Sudirejo II Medan conducted strategies like: Family language policy, using Mandailing Languagein daily life, using Mandailing Languagein social meeting or religious, using Mandailing Languagein cultural activity. (3) the reasons why the Mandailing people maintain the language are: they were proud being Mandailing people and speak Mandailing language and Mandailing Languageshows their identity as Mandailing people. Keywords: Language maintenance and Mandailing.

Abstract

This study investigates the metaphor of modality in Mata Najwa Talk Show on Metro TV based on SLF approach. The objectives of this study are to identify the orientation of modality used in Mata Najwa Talk Show, to describe the orientation of metaphor of modality are used, and to explain the context of situation those metaphor of modality are used. The research design used is descriptive qualitative. The data were taken from three episodes in Mata Najwa talk show about KPK. The data were collected by downloading the video of Mata Najwa talk show from the internet. The finding shows that from four types of orientation of modality, the dominant orientation used in Mata Najwa Talk Show is objective implicit. It means that the speakers use congruent form of modality dominantly while expressing their judgment and attitude. The use of metaphor of modality in Mata Najwa Talk Show realized by the use of incongruent types of expressing meaning, that is by using projecting clause, nominalization and using preposition. Abstract

This study deals with the types of politeness strategies on social media: Facebook posts and Twitter, according to Brown and Levinson's (1987) theory. This research is included in the type of descriptive qualitative research. To answer questions in the research, the author took 30 Facebook posts and Twitter data according to Creswell's (2009) theory, namely by downloading posts from Facebook and Twitter randomly with the theme of Covid-19. Then the data was condensed, displayed and verified conclusion drawn. The results of this study found that there were 5 types of positive politeness strategies and 6 negative politeness strategies. The positive sub strategies are: making offer, showing a sense of optimism, involving the interlocutor and speaker in a certain activities , giving and asking for reasons, and expector demand reciprocity. while the negative politeness strategies include: indirect expression), using fences, stating FTA as a general social, stating clearly that the speaker has given goodness.

Abstract

The Objectives of this paper are to describe the realization of language styles used by male and female teacher and the reasons of the using those language styles. The subjects were the teachers of SMP Negeri Pancur batu, they were four English teachers, consits of two male teachers and two female teachers. It was qualitative explanative research designs. The researcher observed the teachers while teaching in order to get the teachers language styles taking place during their teaching in the classroom related to the theory of Tannen, who divides the way of communication into six categories; pairs a contrasting use of language by males and females, they are: status versus support, independence versus intimacy, advice versus understanding, information versus feeling, orders versus proposal and conflict versus compromise. .The results of the data analysis showed that the. The language styles of the male and female teacher were different in the way of communication. The realization of language styles by the teachers’ way of speaking  mostly occur in male teachers’ is orders which is 13 utterances (38.2%), then followed by advice which is 11 utterances (32.4%), then continued by information 6 utterences (20,6%) and then conflict 2 utterances (5,9%) and the last is status 1 utterances (2.9%). Female teachers’ way in communication was mostly realized by orders  which is 10 utterances (29.4%), then followed by feeling which is 8 utterances (23.5%), and then continued by understanding which is 7 utternces (20.6%), and then support which is 5 utterances (14.7%), and the last is proposal which is 4 utterances (11.8%). Besides, it can be seen that eventhough Tannen (1992) suggested the orders were categorized for male way’s of speaking , but based on this study, orders were found in the female teachers’ way of speaking. There were 29.4% the utterances realized by orders although that criteria is not classified to female. In fact, those way of speaking were the most used in the female teachers. According to the male and female teachers all the ways of communication are expressed to encourage the students to reach the lesson competencies well.Keywords:English Teachers, Language Styles, Way of communication,

Abstract

This study discusses about language use occurred by male and female host in Hitam Putih talk show. The research is conducted by applying qualitative descriptive design. The subjects of this study are male and female host in Hitam Putih talk show. The data are the utterances produced by male and female host in Hitam Putih talk show. This research focuses on the show broadcasted on October 2016 by taking 4 videos randomly. The objectives of this study are (1) to describe kinds of the language use uttered by male and female host in Hitam Putih talk show, (2) to elucidate language use represented by male and female host in Hitam Putih talk show and (3) to describe reasons of different language use by male and female host in Hitam Putih talk show in the ways they are. Additionally, the data are analyzed by applying theory of Interactive Model. The findings showed that the kinds of language use consist of 6 parts such as specialized vocabulary, expletives, empty adjectives, tag questions, polite form and telling joke or humor. The dominant language use uttered by male host is expletive, because male’s utterances are frequently stated in a negative connotation. There are common expressions generally referring to English expletives such as: bad language, profanity, swearwords, cursing, foul language, etc. On the other hand, female host utterances are found in specialized vocabulary as the most dominant because female host has more interest in talking family affairs, such as the education of children, clothes, cooking, and fashion, etc. Women also tended to talk about one thing related to the home and domestic activities. However, the representation of language use uttered by male and female are deficit, dominance and different. And the reason of this matter because of some factors such as psychology and different social status.Key words: Language use, Gender, Talk show

Abstract

This study was aimed at examining the violations of conversational maxim in Satu Indonesia talk show. The objectives of this study were to examine the types of conversational maxim violations occurred in the talk show, to examine the realization of conversational maxim violations, and to elaborate the reasons. This study was conducted by descriptive qualitative method. The source of data was Satu Indonesia talk show. There were 44 episodes of Satu Indonesia talk show in 2014 which were consisted of 14 politics, 15 economics, and 15 socials. Then, the utterances of host and guests in 3 episodes of politics, 3 episodes of economics and 3 episodes of social were the data of this study. The technique of data collection was documentary technique and the instrument of data collection was recorder. The technique of data analysis was interactive model by Miles and Huberman. The findings showed that all conversational maxim violations. Quality maxim was dominantly violated in topic of politics; quantity maxim violation was dominantly violated in the topic of economics and social. Realizations of conversational maxim violations were realized through understatement, overstatement, contradiction, sarcasm, metaphor, associative clues, presupposition, personification, synecdoche, and analogy.   Key Words: Conversational Maxim, Maxim Violations, Talk Show
