Abstract

Digital worksheet, as the one of learning tools that is used to involve the students to works actively during teaching and learning process, should be developed based on students’ need. Digital worksheet in listening skill with scientific approach has not applied. A good digital worksheet must be fulfilled criteria of valid, practical and effective. The aim of this study was to develop English Listening Digital Worksheet for Grade X for Vocational school Students. This study was conducted by using Research and Development (R&D) design through six stages; need analysis, planning, designing digital worksheet, materials evaluation, revising (final product). The subject of the study was Grade X of Hospitality Major at SMK Negeri 7 Medan. The data were gathered by conducting interview to English teacher and distributing questionnaire to 1 class grade X consists of 36 students to get the students’ needs. The interview and questionnaire results prove that the students needs of English Listening Digital Worksheet appropriate with the Hospitality Major context. The product has been validated by experts. The result of the product was the digital worksheet combined with the Wizer.me platform.Keywords: english listening digital worksheet, Wizer.me, research and development (R&D)

Abstract

The study was aimed to recognize how a teaching method could increase students’ competence in speaking. The objective of the study is to describe how the dubbing movie increases the students speaking skill of the tenth Grade Students  of SMA N 15 Medan. The research design is a qualitative research. The data collecting methods were interview, observation, and documentation. The data gained was analyzed by using Miles and Huberman model of the data analysis. The research found that the students of the Grade X in SMA N 15 Medan enjoyed the process of preparing the video dubbing from the announcement, script preparing, and the practice. Some students who noticed difficult in speaking English were found increase in speaking competence especially in languages expression and found a fun way to practice English speaking. For short, the video dubbing teaching method increased the students of SMA N 15 Medan English speaking competence.

Abstract

Nowadays, English become a language that can give a significant impact in many aspects such as education and communication. Therefore people are demanded to master in language including students. For example researcher finding at class x of SMAN 6 Medan student have low competence in writing skill. This study aimed to Develop English Writing Material Using EGRA Technique of Descriptive Text for Grade X. The subject of this research was students’ grade X MIA 2 of SMAN 6 Medan consists of 34 students. Tomlinso (1990) state the EGRA is an effective technique to teach grammar in writing sentence. The letter standing for Exposure, Generalization, Reinforcement, and Application. This research used the model of Research and Development (R&D)of Brog and Gall (2003) has six stages: there are (1) Gathering information, (2) Analyzing data, (3) Designing new writing material using EGRA, (4) Evaluating or validating new writing material by experts, (5) Revising, (6) Final product. The instruments of data collection were syllabus, questioner and interview. The data was gathered by administering interview to the teacher and distributing questioner to the students. The first design writing material of this research consists of three units: “hi iam arief” (describing people), “Mount Lesuer National Park” (describing place), “Water Castle” (describing bulding). The score of validating from expert there are: (1) English lecture, the score of content is 25, score of language is 12, score of presentation is 27,and score of graphic is 9  and the average of score material assessment were 3,17 in categorize good. (2) English teacher English lecture, the score of content is 26, score of language is 12, score of presentation is 25,and score of graphic is 12  and the average of score material assessment were 3,26 in categorize very good. Based on the result of the validation of the experts, there are two aspects that needed to revised such as to revise some grammatical mistakes and unclear the exercise. The final product of writing material consists of three units: “hi I am arief” (describing people), “Mount Lesuer National Park” (describing place), “Water Castle” (describing building). In each unit have four sections provided there are Exposure, Training, Grammar and WritingKey words: writing skill, EGRA  technique, Research and Development (R&D)

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to find out how the feasibility of evaluation tools using KAHOOT application and how students respond to the evaluation tools to be developed. The research method used is research and development (R&D) method using the research model of test instrument development. Research instruments used in the form of tests and questionnaires. This research consists of five steps: 1) Gathering data and information, 2) Need analysis, 3) Developing the instrument evaluation, 4) Validating the product, 5) Revising product and presented as a final product. The average score for student works from the mean value from all aspects is 3.6. It could be concluded that the worksheet is categorized as “Very Good” since the position of the mean value was in the interval 3.25 ≤ ???? ≤ 4.00.

Abstract

This study aim to design English speaking materials needed for students of class XI SMA N 1 Kerajaan. This study was conducted by using Research and Development (R & D) design through six stages; gathering information and data, analyzing data, designing materials, validating by experts, revising, and final product. The subject of this study were students of class XI consisting of 20 students. The instruments for collecting the data were questionnaire and interview. After analyzing the data, the writer got the students’ needs. The data were gathered by administering interview to the English teacher and distributing the questionnaire to 20 respondents to get the students’ needs. The interview and questionnaire result of the needs analysis showed that the students needed materials for speaking which were attractive and interesting and based on their social life context. Thus, the learning materials were developed into 6 of speaking material. By two experts; English lecturer and English teacher. The average scores are 4,7 or 95% from English Lecturer and 4,5 or 90% from English Teacher. It means the developing materials categorized as relevant, thus, it can be concluded that contextual teaching and learning speaking materials had been appropriated for grade XI students of Senior High School.Key words: Research and Development (R & D), Speaking materials, Contextual Teaching and  Learning

Abstract

This study aims to find out whether students’ achievement trough using Project Based Learning is higher than trough discussion method in writing procedure text. The research was conducted by experimental research used in two groups. They are experimental use Project Based Learning and control use Discussion Method. The subject of this were the students of SMP Negeri 2 Babalan class VII-2 and VII-3 consisted of 30 students for each class. To collecting the data was taken from writing test. After analyzing the data, it was found that the value of t-obs was 4.16 with degree of freedom (df) = 58 at the level of significance p(0.05) = 2,000. It means that t-obs is higher than t-table. It was found that teaching procedure text by using Project Based Learning is higher than discussion method. Project Based Learning has a significant effect on students’ achievement in writing procedure text.   Key words: Project Based Learning, Writing achievement, Procedure Text.

Abstract

The aim of this study was to develop the interactive learning multimedia by using lectora inspire for eight grade students at SMP Negeri 35 Medan. This study was conducted by using Research and Development (R & D) design through six stages; gathering data and information, need analysis, designing interactive learning multimedia, validating by the experts, revising and final product. The subject of the study was eighth grade students in SMP Negeri 35 Medan. The data were gathered by administering interview to an English teacher and distributing questionnaire to 29 respondents to get the students’ needs. The questionnaire result prove that the students need English media in learning writing which can stimulate students’ ability and develop writing skill. The product has been validated by an English lecturer and an English teacher with the interval was 4.6. The product was categorized as “Very Good” interactive learning multimedia of writing personal recount text as its positions in the interval . The final product of this study was an interactive learning multimedia of writing personal recount text in the form of an executable (.exe) packaged on a CD (compact disk).

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to describe and to explain teacher’s Oral Feedback toward students’ response in speaking skill at SMKS Eria Medan. The subject were the students of SMKS Eria Medan from eleventh grade. The types of oral feedback such as positive feedback praise, corrective feedback, recast feedback, explicit correction feedback, elicitation feedback, metalinguistic feedback, repetition feedback and clarification request feedback. The types of feedback that given by the English teacher such as: praise feedback, recast feedback, repetition feedback and metalinguistics (elicitation).There were five reasons why the teacher using the oral feedback: It gives both the teacher and the students information, appreciate the students, it providing direction to students, it providing language input to students, it encouraged students to learn, it encouraged students to be selfsufficient. Teacher might need to apply and know the types of feedback that are appropriate to improve students’ achievement in learning English. However, not all teachers are aware of what type of feedback they use in their classroom and preferred by their students to improve the students English language achievement. The result of the research showed that the English teacher mostly used the directly feedback when give feedback to the students. The researcher used observation and interview for collecting the data.

Abstract

The research focuses on the role of the teacher as a facilitator.The objective ofresearch was to know what are the characteristics of teacher’s role as a facilitatorto enhance EFL students’ speaking skill. This study was conducted at SMA PAB 4Sampali, Medan which the sample was the twenty five students and an Englishteacher at grade XI that had been selected by doing an observation and deliveringquestionnaire based on the characteristics of teacher’s role as a facilitator. Themethod for this research was qualitative descriptive. The data was collected bydistributing the questionnaire and doing an observation during the learning process.The results showed that the teacher completely fulfill the characteristics of teacher’srole as a facilitator.It is because the students dominantly choose strongly agree inthree characteristics and agree in five characteristics, that are Partnership (92%),Participant (96%), Knowledge available (84%), Open learning (84), and also Widerhorizon (60%).It was also found that the students choose that they are strongly agreein three caharacteristics, that are Focuses on learning (76%), Studentscentered(68%), and Sharing (68%).Meanwhile, the teacher can not play twocharacteristics, because the students dominantly choose disagree in Focus onIndividual Learning Needs (92%) and Let Students Set Parameter (68%).During thelearning process confirmed that the teacher was able to play a role as a facilitator.Itcan be seen from ten characteristics, the teacher had eight characteristics as afacilitator. However, it is so important for the teacher to have the characteristics asa facilitator in supporting students to enhance their speaking skill.

Abstract

This study attempts to discover the effect of applying Personal Experiences Strategy on students’ achievement in writing narrative text. It was conducted by using experimental research design. The population of this research was the tenth (X) grade students of SMA N 6 Padangsidimpuan  which consists of 10 parallel classes with the total number of students is 64. The samples of this research were taken by random sampling through lottery technique. The result was class X1 consisted of 32 students became the experimental group and class X2 consisted of 32 students became the control group. The experimental group was taught by Personal Experiences Strategy while the control group was taught by using Big group work strategy. The instrument was used to collect the data was writing narrative text. After the data were analyzed, it was found that the value of t-observed was 4.25 with the degree of freedom (df) = 62 at the level significance 0.05. it means that t-observed was higher than t-table (4.25 > 1.997. The result of this study showed that teaching narrative text by using personal experiences strategy was higher than that by big group work. Keywords : Using Personal Experiences Strategy.
