Abstract

The clean water is not always a big city’s issue. A sub-district of South Lasalimu is an example of how a clean water problem exists due to natural factor. This research work aims to assess the availability of water clean sources in a transmigration area. The based on this assessment a strategy for clean water management in the area is formulated. This research used methods of water quality analysis, Guttman scale, requirement analysis, water quantity analysis, and SWOT analysis. The research identified that water resources available in the area consist of well water, water river, and rainwater. The daily need of clean water per person was is identified as 59 Liter, so all local residents in the area require approx. 15,656 m3/year. It is necessarily important to manage water resources in order to fulfill the need of clean water. An alternative for clean water management is by utilizing rain water to secure the clean water supply. With the rainfall of about 3,681 mm/year, there would be 18,405 m3/year of clean water can be collected from the rain. There are several steps to utilize the rain water through retention basin, filtration, and gravity distribution. This research also delivers an alternative strategy for an effective water resources management which used an opportunity to minimize weakness (W-O strategy), with primary priority to ask for government support in their capacity and capability (authority) to manage water resources.

Abstract

Wood industry produces a large amount of waste water that contains various pollutants. These pollutants are mostly dangerous for the environment. This research work aims to analyze the ability of phytoremediation for reducing pollutants in wood industrial waste water. These experiments usee Chrysopongon zizanoides L. and Ipomoea aquatica Forsk as phytoremediation agents. The ability was evaluated from the improved quality of wood industrial wastewater and the growth rate of C. zizanioides (L.) and I. aquatica Forsk in wood industrial wastewater. Analysis was conducted by measuring the removal efficiency of pollutants in wood industrial wastewater, the correlation between the reduced pollutants concentrations in the waste water and plant growth rate. Furthermore, a mathematical model is developed to predict the potential of C. zizanioides (L.) and I. aquatica Forsk for wood industrial wastewater. The result showed that C.zizanioides L. and I aquatica Forsk were potential phytoremediation agent. The removal efficiency for C.zizanioides L. and I aquatica Forsk are respectively as follows: 66.19% and 41.18%, TSS 58.51% and 45.38%, COD 70.07% and 40.37%, Total Amonia Nitrogen (TAN) 63.70% and 66.96%, NH3 96.16% and 88.79%, and PO43- 53.90% and 38.38%. Relative Growth Rate (RGR) of C. zizanioides (0.011±0.002 g/day) is better than I. aquatica Forsk (0.007±0.001 g/day). Daily Growth Rate (DGR) of C. zizanioides (0.019±0.003 cm/day) is better than I. aquatica Forsk (0.012±0.006 cm/day). TSS, COD, NH3, NO3-, and phenol have a negative correlation to plant growth (based on wet weight and root length). The developed mathematical models can be used to predict the phytoremediation potential of C. zizanioides (L.) and I. aquatica Forsk in degrading COD, TSS, and phenols of wood industrial waste.

Abstract

This research work is aimed to evaluate the process performance profile of tofu industry and its associated pollution load as well as analysing its management strategy. The work was carried out through industrial survey and measurement in various technological states of tofu processing in the regions of Tegal, Klaten, Solo, Jakarta, and Bogor. An experimental work was also conducted to optimise the level of process water usage in tofu processing. The research work showed that every 1 kg soybean processed results in 3.3±0.7 kg tofu curd, 2.0-2.2 kg pressed cake, and 17±3 L effluent in average. This wastewater exhibits the main source of environmental pollution, having the characteristics of BOD5, total COD, soluble COD, TSS, and TKN of 50±8, 110±20, 80±20, 9±3, and 4±2 g/kg soybean processed, respectively. The experimental work indicated that varying the amount of process water in the range of 16-25 L/kg soybean did not result in a significant improvement of the product yield as well as pressed cake. Based on the measurement results, the laboratory analysis, and theoretical information, this paper demonstrates quantitatively some potential benefits derived from utilising the organic content of tofu processing effluent by treating it anaerobically to generate biogas.
