Abstract

This research is conducted for two main objectives, (1) to identify whether the sociolinguistic contexts have been included in the presentation of interpersonal and transactional text materials in the selected textbook; (2) to analyze the variables of contexts that might have been included.  The text book being analysed is an English textbook for Grade VII, “The title is Bahasa Inggris When English Rings a Bell, SMP/MTs Kelas VII, which is written by Siti Wachidah, Asep Gunawan, Diyantari, Yuli Rulani Khatimah. It is reviewed and edited by Rd. Safrina Noorman and Lestari Manggong and published in 2017 by Pusat Kurikulum dan Perbukuan, Balitbang, Kemendikbud. This research is an evaluation research by applying content analysis method. The analysis is started by (1) identifying or codifying the text materials which belong to both interactional and transactional conversation; (2) categorizing the types of conversations (interactional or transactional); (3) analyzing the inclusion of sociolinguistic contexts in each of the conversations based on the four out of five variables of sociolinguistic contexts proposed by Harmer (2001). The variables include setting, participant, channel, and topic; the last (4)interpreting the result of analysis. The findings show that almost all the topics of the dialog texts have been designed concurrently with the English syllabus for SMP/MTs Kelas VII. Yet, there are only few variables of setting, participant, and channel which are identifiable. To conclude, the variables of sociolinguistic contexts have not been entirely included in the text materials.

Abstract

In English language learning, writing is a skill that allows students to express their ideas, opinions, and thoughts effectively. However, students at SMPN 03 Entikong demonstrated low writing proficiency. This research aimed to investigate how the implementation of the Storyboard in teaching solves students’ writing problems. Storyboard is a teaching tool that displays a sequence of pictures accompanied by the appropriate words and sentences to describe events in the story. This research was conducted through classroom action research, which was carried out in two cycles with 36 students in Grade VIII-B as participants. Data were collected using writing test, observation checklist, and field notes. The quantitative findings showed an improvement in the average of the writing test score from 63.44 to 72.22. The qualitative results indicated that the implementation of Storyboard in the writing instruction and practice helped students to express ideas clearly, choose appropriate vocabulary, and use correct grammar in their writing, especially for the narrative text. Thus, it can be concluded that Storyboard improved students’ writing skills.

Abstract

Writing instruction in Indonesian vocational education faces significant challenges in engaging students and providing personalized feedback, yet limited empirical research has examined systematic ChatGPT integration in vocational English contexts. This classroom action research investigated and successfully improved tenth-grade students' writing skills at SMK Amaliyah Sekadau through systematic ChatGPT implementation following Kemmis and McTaggart's model across three instructional cycles. Twenty-six Computer and Network Engineering students participated, with data collected through observation checklists, field notes, writing assessment rubrics, and student response questionnaires. Results demonstrated a 37-percentage-point cumulative improvement from baseline 42.4% to post-Cycle 3 79.0% across five writing components: content, vocabulary, grammar, spelling, and mechanics. Student engagement increased significantly, with 85% expressing enhanced motivation and 88% perceiving ChatGPT as highly useful for writing development. This study revealed that systematic ChatGPT integration provided immediate personalized feedback, enhanced learner autonomy, and improved writing competence in vocational contexts, contributing empirical evidence for AI-infused English language teaching aligned with Indonesia's Merdeka Curriculum framework.

Abstract

Research into the use of Instagram for learning writing has mostly focused on how Instagram was used by teachers to improve students’ writing skills rather than how it is used by students in self-directed learning. To fill this gap, this research aimed at uncovering students’ perceptions towards Instagram for learning writing skills in their natural settings without any intervention to any variables. The data were derived from Likert Scale questionnaires distributed to 53 students and interviews with selected students. The data revealed that the students tended to have positive perceptions toward: 1) caption and photo feature (M=4.06), 2) Instagram social media interaction (M=3.81), and 3) Instagram direct message (M=3.89) to learn English writing. The students believed that they could explore ideas, learn vocabulary, and grammar through the caption and photo feature. They added that interactions through comment and direct message feature on Instagram allowed them to exchange ideas and promote their writing skills. The research also revealed that the students could receive feedback to correct the mistakes in grammar and vocabulary from other online users although it happened occasionally.

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

This research was a sociolinguistic study focusing on bilingualism and language choice involving students from the English Education Study Program (EESP) as participants who were presumably members of a bilingual speech community. The objective of the research was to describe the profile of the bilingual community members with their sociolinguistic background, to analyze the patterns of language choice that occurred, and how they represent the speakers’ sociolinguistic competence in social interaction, and to interpret how the language patterns imply the role of the English in the community. A small-scale survey was conducted with non-participant observation using questionnaires and documentary sources as the tools for data collection. The research concluded that students of EESP were firmly verified as bilingual speech community members. They not only shared common stuff dealing with their academic right and duties, but also common languages as their repertoires with the same knowledge of appropriateness for the language choice practice. The choice considered the social contexts in addition to the intelligibility of the language to the participants. The co-occurrence of the choice showed that the rules of alternation existed, but were bendable. It did not represent any situation of diglossia. The occurrence of the patterns represented how the speakers’ sociolinguistic competence controlled the practice of the language choice. As an implication, English played additional roles for them to not only show their social status identity, but also as the language of education, as well as a language to build their global social networking.
