Abstract

Iodine deficiency has been reported to re-emerge in developed countries, such as the United States and Taiwan, with significant cognitive consequences, despite inconsistencies in the existing body of evidence. Meanwhile, Indonesia lacks up-to-date data on population iodine status. This literature review aimed to examine the role of iodine in cognitive development and the impact of iodine deficiency at different life stages. The review employed a literature-based approach by searching English-language articles published between 2016 and 2025 using the Scopus, Google Scholar, PubMed, and ScienceDirect databases and the PRISMA analytical framework. The included studies were original research and review articles involving pregnant women, children, and adolescents. The findings indicate that iodine deficiency is associated with impaired cognitive function, particularly when exposure occurs during pregnancy. Adequate iodine intake through food fortification programs, supplementation, and consumption of iodine-rich foods supports optimal cognitive development. Therefore, continuous monitoring and strengthening of iodine fortification interventions are required to support human capital development. In addition, enhanced iodine supplementation programs for pregnant women, improved education on iodized salt consumption, and ongoing monitoring and evaluation of fortification programs are needed to update and strengthen iodine status data in Indonesia.

Abstract

HIV remains a pressing public health issue in Indonesia, with Jambi City showing a steady increase in cases, especially among high-risk groups. This study aims to estimate the prevalence of HIV in Jambi City and examine various factors related to HIV infection, including socio-economic conditions, individual behaviors, and family history. It also explores public knowledge about HIV prevention, along with treatment adherence and quality of life among people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA). A cross-sectional study was conducted between August and September 2024 at four community health centers, involving 101 HIV-positive respondents who were undergoing antiretroviral therapy (ART). Data were collected through face-to-face interviews using validated questionnaires. The estimated HIV prevalence in Jambi City was 0.19%, based on average rates from the selected health centers. Among participants, 35.6% had low ART adherence, while 29.7% had high adherence. Better HIV prevention knowledge and fewer side effects were significantly associated with improved adherence. Additionally, having strong social support and being part of a peer-sharing community were linked to higher physical health-related quality of life. These findings highlight the need for more comprehensive HIV programs that not only focus on treatment but also strengthen education, manage treatment side effects, and build supportive community environments. This study offers a locally grounded perspective by combining prevalence estimates with psychosocial factors, providing useful input for targeted and sustainable intervention strategies in Jambi. The results may serve as a reference for health policymakers to design more integrated and context-appropriate HIV responses at the community level.

Abstract

Atherosclerosis is predominantly an inflammatory process that is the key pathophysiological cause of ischemic coronary heart disease (CHD). Some studies suggest that sorghum can reduce atherosclerotic parameters through many biological activities, such as antioxidant, anti-inflammation, and anti-thrombotic properties. The primary objective was to evaluate the effect of an enteral sorghum tempeh formula on the levels of Plasminogen Activator Inhibitor-1 (PAI-1) and Interleukin-6 (IL-6) in an atherosclerotic rat model. A total of 24 male rats were utilized, with the experiment structured into an 8-week atherogenic diet induction period, followed by a 4-week intervention phase. The rats were divided into four groups: a healthy control, an atherogenic control, and two treatment groups supplemented with the formula at 0.75g/200 g and 1.50g/200 g body weight (BW), respectively. IL-6 and PAI-1 levels were quantified using Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA). The atherogenic diet successfully induced a significant elevation in both IL-6 and PAI-1 levels compared to the healthy control group (p=0.000), indicating a heightened inflammatory and thrombotic state in the atherosclerotic group. Conversely, the groups receiving the sorghum tempeh-based formula exhibited a significant reduction in both IL-6 and PAI-1 levels compared to the atherogenic control group (p=0.000), suggesting potent anti-inflammatory and antithrombotic properties of the sorghum tempeh.

Abstract

Melanocortin 4 receptor (MC4R) plays a central role in appetite regulation and energy homeostatis. The rs17782313 polymorphism in the downstream region of MCR4 has been consistently associated with obesity, hyperglycemia and an increased risk of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), although the magnitude of the effect varies across ethnicities and study design. A largescale meta-analysis indicates that the C risk allele increases the risk of T2DM partially independent of BMI. Literature search on Pubmed, Scopus, Web of Science and Google Scholar; studies in English or Indonesian on the rs17782313 genotype were included, while non-journal publications and studies that did not present genotype data were not included in this review. Cross-ethnic evidence indicates that carriers of the C allele have a 6-10% increased risk of T2DM. In Korean population, the C allele was associated with higher fasting glucose and increase diabetes risk, with differences in effect according to sex and BMI. This was reinforced by a 2023 systematic review reporting an association between rs17782313 and increase BMI, waist circumference and glucose. The MC4R rs17782313 polymorphism is thought to act as a genetic susceptibility marker for DM, particularly T2DM. Large-scale cohort studies and functional studies are needed to confirm the causal relationship and clarify the interaction between genetic and environmental factors.
