Abstract

Difficulty is the cause of errors, math errors refer to actions or results that do not follow the correct steps or procedures in solving math problems. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to describe procedural errors in solving social arithmetic problems using Polya's steps. In this context, procedural errors refer to mistakes made by students while following the systematic steps recommended by Polya, which include understanding the problem, planning a solution strategy, carrying out the plan, and reviewing the results. This study aims to identify where and how errors occur at each of these stages, as well as to provide a deeper understanding of the challenges faced by students in solving social arithmetic problems. This research used a qualitative approach with a case study design. The participants of this study were 22 students of class VII of State Junior High School 3 Satu Atap Tawangharjo. Data validity uses triangulation of methods, namely through interviews and observations, and source triangulation. Data analysis technique with the flow method of the Miles and Huberman model. The study found that students experienced errors at each stage of Polya's steps. The percentage of student errors at each step is as follows: 20% in the understanding the problem step, 30% in the devising a plan step, 35% in the carrying out the plan step, and 15% in the looking back step. Three students were selected as samples, S-1, S-2, and S-3, each showing errors at different stages. S-1 made errors in understanding the problem and devising a plan, S-2 in devising a plan and carrying out the plan, while S-3 made errors in carrying out the plan and looking back. This research will describe the problem-solving errors experienced by students based on each Polya step they perform.

Abstract

Correlational misconceptions experienced by students must be overcome so that they can better understand the relationship between concepts and avoid reasoning errors in solving problems. This study aims to explore the forms of correlational misconceptions experienced by students and analyze the types of limited interventions in each form of student correlational misconceptions on probability materials. This type of research is qualitative-case study. The research subjects were 10 grade XII students at SMA Negeri 1 Boyolali. Data collection uses participatory observation, document analysis, and in-depth interviews. The validity of the data uses triangulation methods. Data analysis includes reduction, presentation, and withdrawal of data conclusions. This study reveals four forms of correlational misconceptions grouped into three main categories. The first category has two misconceptions about students' inability to connect mathematical concepts or procedures logically. This misconception can be overcome by applying disequilibration strategies and cognitive conflicts in sequence. Meanwhile, the second and third categories each include one form of misconception. In the second category, there is a misconception about applying concepts or procedures that are irrelevant to a particular context. On the other hand, the third category is a misconception regarding the error of connecting specific events with general principles. Combination strategies involving disequilibration, cognitive conflict, and scaffolding effectively overcome misconceptions in the second and third categories. The results of these findings can be the basis for further research to develop a learning model that can anticipate the occurrence of correlational misconceptions in students.

Abstract

Computational thinking skills play an important role in developing students' critical and logical thinking skills in solving problems. The purpose of this study was to explore computational thinking skills in all aspects (decomposition, abstraction, pattern recognition and algorithm) of grade IV Special Programme Learning Primary School in urban areas in solving AKM numeracy problems. Data collection was carried out through written tests, interviews, and documentation. The method applied in this study was qualitative with a case study design. The data validity test used was the source and method triangulation technique. In the data analysis technique, qualitative analysis techniques were used, namely data reduction, data presentation and drawing conclusions. The results of the study showed that the computational thinking ability of students can be categorized into complete and uncomplete. Learners with the complete category fulfill all four indicators of computational thinking, namely being able to decompose complex problems into simple ones (decomposition), being able to formulate important information (abstraction), identifying patterns (pattern recognition) and being able to compile systematic logical steps (algorithms). Learners with uncomplete abilities have not fulfilled the four indicators of computational thinking, namely namely some learners can identify relevant information (decomposition, abstraction), recognize patterns (pattern recognition) but most have not been able to design problem solving steps systematically (algorithms) and there are also some learners who have not been able to understand the problem at all and analyze problem solving.

Abstract

Students’ low mathematical critical thinking skills, as shown by the 2022 PISA results and studies, suggest that traditional teaching methods may inadequately develop these abilities. This study examines the effectiveness of combining Kahoot technology with the Teams Games Tournament (TGT) cooperative model to enhance these skills. Using a quasi-experimental pretest-posttest design, fifth-grade students in Madiun City were divided into experimental and control groups. Data were analyzed via General Linear Models (GLM) and MANOVA. Results indicate a significant difference between groups (p=0.011), with the intervention explaining 17.4% of variance in improvement (Partial Eta Squared=0.174). This study provides novel evidence that a Kahoot-based TGT model effectively improves mathematical critical thinking in elementary students—an underexplored area in primary education.
