Abstract

This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of the foster guardian model in strengthening Pancasila character values, esprit de corps, and identity among cadets of the Correctional Sciences Polytechnic (Poltekip) of the Ministry of Law and Human Rights. Using a qualitative descriptive design with a case-study approach, data were collected through in-depth interviews, field observations, and document analysis involving cadets, foster guardians, and instructors. The analysis employed triangulation to ensure the credibility and validity of findings. The results show that the foster guardian model contributes positively to the internalization of Pancasila values by promoting discipline, responsibility, and personalized mentoring. However, its implementation is constrained by the limited number of mentors, the absence of a standardized mentoring curriculum, and inadequate supporting facilities, particularly the lack of dormitories that hinder continuous supervision. The study also found that esprit de corps develops more strongly in structured and communal environments, while family involvement in character formation remains limited. To address these challenges, strategies such as strengthening alumni participation, enhancing the mentoring capacity of lecturers, and adopting a community-based cultural approach are recommended. In conclusion, effective character development for Poltekip cadets requires synergy between institutional systems, competent mentors, and a supportive social environment. The findings highlight the need for a more integrative and sustainable foster guardian model to optimize the internalization of Pancasila values and cadet identity formation.

Abstract

The phenomenon of suicide in Bali shows an increasing trend that raises a socio-religious paradox amid the strong traditional structures and Hindu spirituality. Various studies confirm that depression, psychosocial pressure, low self-regulation, and loss of meaning in life contribute significantly to the emergence of suicidal ideation. This study aims to analyse the strengthening of character through the concepts of Sāstratah, Gurutah, and Swatah as Hindu psychospiritual-based preventive strategies. The study uses a qualitative approach, grounded in a literature review, through critical analysis of scriptures, Hindu theological literature, and relevant psychological and mental health studies. The results of the study show that Sāstratah lays the foundation for meaning in life by understanding humans as atman, with a dharma-and mokṣa-oriented perspective. Gurutah presents a process of inner clarification through reflective dialogue and guided yoga practices that strengthen emotional regulation and self-awareness. Swatah marks the deepest stage of internalisation, when yajña transforms from an external ritual into an internal burning of the ego, giving birth to compassion and existential resilience. The magnanimous character formed through these three paths functions as a psychospiritual fortress that strengthens the meaning of life, self-control, and resilience to pressure. The scientific contribution of this article lies in the formulation of a tiered psychospiritual model that integrates classical Hindu texts with modern psychological theory as a contextual conceptual reinterpretation for Balinese society. This study is theoretical and literature-based, thus requiring further empirical research to test the model's validity and effectiveness in measurable terms. Thus, the concepts of Sāstratah, Gurutah, and Swatah contribute as a conceptual framework for Hindu-based character education in contextual and transformative preventive efforts to reduce suicidal ideation.

Abstract

Strengthening the academic competence of pre-service physics teachers requires instructional designs that not only emphasize scientific processes but also draw on local wisdom as a meaningful learning context. This study examined the effectiveness of integrating the scientific approach with WASAKA local wisdom in improving the academic competence of physics education students. A quantitative method with a pre-experimental design was employed during the second semester of the 2024/2025 academic year. The study participants consisted of 9 students in the limited trial and 21 students in the extensive trial. Academic competence was assessed using pretest–posttest essay questions, while students’ responses were analyzed through an ARCS-based questionnaire. The results indicate a clear improvement in students’ academic competence following the intervention. The gain scores were in the moderate category for both the limited trial (g = 0.55) and the extensive trial (g = 0.43), suggesting a meaningful increase in academic performance. Improvements were observed across all competence indicators, with relatively higher achievement in conceptual understanding and experimental design skills, whereas mathematical reasoning showed a more moderate increase. Student responses were highly positive across all ARCS dimensions, reflecting strong attention, relevance, confidence, and satisfaction with the learning experience. These findings confirm that integrating the scientific approach with WASAKA local wisdom offers a promising contextual learning strategy in physics teacher education, with further emphasis recommended on scaffolding to strengthen mathematical reasoning.
